  5. Finally got this sorted so i thought i better put some photos up. Some history first, I saw some photos on face book somebody took of random cars at kumeu hotrod show. One of them was of this car. I got hold of my bro Ray (ja1lb8) as his family is always at the show. His old man was there and had already spotted the car and put an offer on it on our behalf knowing one of us would have it. It belonged to an old lady who was going into a home and her family was selling off all her old shit to pay for it. The car was bought new by her husband in 1970 in OZ, and they bought it here in 74 when they moved to nz. The husband died a few years later and she kept driving it to the shops in west auckland once a week ever since. It also came with a folder of invoices for the last 40 years of ownership. Lets just say she was taken for a bit of a ride by a certain west auckland nissan dearler with servicing costs and repairs for wof's. Could have bought a few of them for what she has spent over the years. A month ago i finally picked it up from Ray as it took me a while to obtain permission from the boss, (insiders would argue that i never actually got permission, but it was too late...). When i went to change the ownership, it came up as stolen. The brother of the old lady wanted it and had reported it stolen to try and get it back. The next week as i tried to get to the bottom of the story i stripped it in case i had to give it back. The cops cancelled the stolen car notice as it was just sour grapes. Then on the weekend i went to get a wof and it had no vin number in the system. Here we go again, turns out it has never been in the system, and only now its fully computerised, they could not issue me a wof. Thanks to the GC's at VTNZ new plymouth it was sorted monday and now its legit! tl;dr photos L24, 3 speed column change. Drums all round. Has had a respray at some stage. Will put some photos up of the interior in a few days. Also came with an 8 track and some sweet old tapes Discussion //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/50036-fletchs-1970-datsun-cedric-super-six/

  6. "The Mitsubishi Silver Pigeon is a series of scooters made in Japan by Mitsubishi between 1946 and 1963. The first was the C-10, based on a scooter imported from the United States by Koujiro Maruyama, which began production at the Nagoya Machinery Works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Along with the Mizushima three-wheeler pickup truck it represented Mitsubishi's first contributions to the Japanese post-war personal transport boom. The Silver Pigeon's primary competitor was the Fuji Rabbit (and in 1954, the Honda Juno). Motor scooters were so important to the post-war vehicle industry that In May 1948 both a Silver Pigeon and a Rabbit were presented to the Emperor of Japan. The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan lists the Silver Pigeon C-10 model introduced in 1946 as one of their 240 Landmarks of Japanese Automotive Technology. The Silver Pigeon proved sufficiently successful to remain in production for almost twenty years. Motor Cyclist magazine voted it "best in styling" for three consecutive years in the 1950s, a decade after its introduction, while from 1950 to 1964 it maintained an average 45 percent share of the domestic scooter market.By the time production came to an end in 1963 over 463,000 had been manufactured, with the 1960 C-200 proving the most popular individual model, with almost 38,000 sales" This particular model is a 1960 c76 with a 192 cc four-stroke single cylinder engine. I have owned this for atleast 10 years, I acquired it from a distant relative who passed away, the story goes that he had bought it in an auction and had pulled the engine down for some sort of repair and passed away, unfortunately the engine was left in pieces in a barn which wasn't enclosed near woodhill forest so all the components are either missing or heavily corroded. I've only just had it delivered to where im living for the first time since I've owned it so looking forward to seeing exactly what is there over the next couple of days, if you are able to point me in the direction of a sheet metal wizard to undertake the task of repairing the fairings please feel free to comment!

  9. Upon viewing for the first time I discovered the reason for the high revs @ 100kmh The chap even went as far as to change out the 4.3 ratio for a 4.1 cwp. I quizzed him if he changed the box and this was met with derision, had to physically show him 5th gear. I also noted no mention of the turbo which was odd because even when it was first imported it was turbo! It came in with an old school HKS setup with log manifold and huge external gate - apparently this was all shit so the prev owner got rid of it (wish it was on display in my shed ) I decide to run the gauntlet regardless and maybe re-cert later. Furthermore the rear interior was gone and asking about it resulted in: "What do you want that for, it's not a family car!" "Well you know it's nice just to have..." "I threw it all away" **sighhhh** I also commented on the external High Stop "Stink bro, did you have to do that for the WOF?" It was defended at least times throughout the convo referencing it's style, the fact it looked like a rocket and it's forward facing LED light "so you can see when you are braking!" Naturally I "rescued" the car ASAP Here's a couple of pics I took on my phone when first imported: Wee bit jacked on TRD sus - tried to buy for my KE70 at the time but too poor I am pretty sold on the Goodline Aero now of course! Sweet shopping list I want to do terrible things to that bumper...

  10. Im in central Auckland too and happy to come round and give you a hand sometime if you want man. The gear selector shaft will be under the car running from the gearstick to the back/bottom of the diff. Should be connected at both ends.

  15. In a rare moment of lucidity, I realised the poor old girl lanquishing in the shed under a pile of parts and gathering dust had just celebrated her 45th birthday. She has been parked after overheating a couple of years ago and being put in the 'too hard' basket and forgotten about - apart from my girls who love playing in the 'big car' in Dad's shed. Despite having umpteen other projects on the go (plus wife/kids/work/sports) I decided I needed something else to spend time/money and to skin my knuckles on. Shit pic but it reflects the loss of dignity of the old girl being parked up and used as a bench... It is a factory 302 Fairmont, C4 with column change and fold down seat between the buckets. Had her since I was 18, and despite the mistakes of youth, I still have original 2 barrel carb, manifolds etc tucked away. Now, I could just sort the overheating issue and drive her, OR I could take the chance to pull the engine, tidy up 40+ yrs of use, and add some fun bits while I'm at it - so she can gather her skirts and keep up with the brash young tarts of today. Seeing a 2T engine hoist on sale at The Toolshed with free delivery made my mind up, so I ripped into it last night...

  16. Hello Nelsonians Not to intrude as I am aware a good bunch of you on here meet regularly on Sundays, but I am helping a client and friend of mine who owns Fresh Choice Nelson and is a massive car enthusiast with an event he wants to emulate in New Zealand. Basically, a pop up coffee shop, last Sunday of each month, differing locations. Facebook page in progress: https://www.facebook.com/Cars-and-Coffee-Nelson-642013185936943 I hope to see some you there. Mark plans to expand this event if the first two meets go well. Cheers, Rory ps: Soon we are also performing a low-key trial of a 'race' event, however this will be more for your newer high spec cars

  17. Are there any P5B weirdos who would be interested in kicking the tyres of a vehicle in Christchurch?

  18. Yes, in the HCTM - can look tomorrow. I used 10mm. Probably OK if properly engineered. Some of the USA caliper brackets are sketchy, best if the are one piece, TIG welded spacers on the bracket are OK, but 2-piece welded brackets are undesireable.

  21. GOOD NEWS-SHE RUNS!!!! well kinda , i had to bottle feed her fuel until she was running enough to start sucking fuel from the tank so she starts and doesnt die step 1 COMPLETE, there is always a but though.... she doesnt drive , the main reason she has been parked for a year and hasn driven there is something wrong in either the diff or gearbox because she just spins and doesnt move , im not sure what the problem is and if i have to go try find a diff or a gearbox but ill need to talk to someone about that as i dont have a clue whats wrong

  24. Yeah there's a 4.777 in there at the moment I believe. I have just got a 4.3 coming up from CHCH now that I will be putting in there as well as rebuilding it. Last thing on the 'major fix' list! Have you checked Yahoo! Auctions? Bound to be some on there, if you get stuck give me a bell and can help you out. But thanks!! Don't look in the nooks and cranny's though......

  27. FIxed all the hoses, including pulling the dash out to get at the heater box. Been driving it around a bit and discovered a small leak out of the bottom radiator outlet. Took it out and tried to swap in a 330 series 260c item, but its too tall. Today i took the radiator to some old barrys at the radiator shop in town. They knew who made the core and where to get one before even finding out what the radiator was out of! So thats getting recored. Also, the brakes are fucking stupid. One day a long time ago, datsun decided to put disc brakes on their flagship cedric. They looked around and saw these calipers on cars such as ferraris, jensens, jags etc. All mid 60's sports cars. They thought that they would be a great choice. They were wrong. Took me a week to locate a caliper kit and some pads. Also, new semi sealed headlights. Tried many types of lamps until i found some that fitted the car correctly. A little flat on the lense, but they will be sweet. However they are the most expensive. FML Long story short $$$$$ hope to have it going for nats. pics then

  28. Beats me why anyone would take Thursday off to aimlessly cruise down instead of getting up early and entering track day. Threeonthetree, your Wednesday night accommodation is a tempting concept, but y u no book something nearer to / North of the track? Planning a big Horopito Motors mission?

  30. the front spoiler showed up today. it fits and is well made, which is diametrically opposed to the last pile of shit i bought. i drilled some holes in it and bolted it on. all G. so now ill paint it red. i also finished fitting the door glass and adjusting the glass to sit right with each other and the top seal. I've set them pretty tight because all the seals are new so it should bed in a bit. I've ordered new door belt seals and ill fit them when they turn up. its also got a matching set of door locks so its now lockable. tomorrow ill give it a hosing and see if it leaks. celica doors are pretty good if all the seals are new so it should be right. 2016-02-16_04-50-12 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-02-16_04-50-26 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-02-16_08-51-20 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-02-16_08-51-28 by sheepers, on Flickr

  31. Another moment of stupidity and I'm now the owner of a 32 channel Calrec S analog mixing desk. I figured it's a winter project with the assumption that it's going to freeze over for the next decade and I'll then emerge with a 3ft beard and a completed desk. The unit came with tons of spares, reportedly cost upwards of $750k when purchased in the early 2000's and there won't be a person here that hasn't heard the results of this desk. Its both a bit of NZ broadcasting history and also an interesting project to add to the collection and help to kit out my retro analog sound room/studio when it's completed. In it's current naked state What it's supposed to look like. It takes a truckload of cards like this

  33. You should be able to space your standard legacy crossmembers as long as your spacers have the same amount of surface area as the crossmember mounting surface had. If you want to space everything down by 25mm (1inch") then i recomend solid steel for the spacers.

  34. I sold a car about 6 months ago and I got a letter in the post saying I am no longer the registered owner 3 times and now I just got a letter saying the rego is due, if they haven't changed the ownership would this happen?

  35. I think it is actually a requirement to have a reverse gear but mostly it sounds like chinese whispers and people getting confused I have no doubt the bosses want to reduce the instances of trucks reversing to an absolute minimum because thats the most common time for someone to get run over or for them to whack in to something. e.g. reverse parking rules are pretty common on many industrial sites these days and having to have a spotter for all reversing (although often the spotter is the one who is likely to get squashed ) and even for just moving big stuff around with forklifts in some places. someone has just taken that idea/or how that was expressed and jumped to the conclusion of removing reverse gear. which as yowzer points out is impractical.

  36. Also, I found a long lost pair of vice grips under the carpet on my datsun on the head of one of my gearbox mount bolts. Tack the bolts, would defo trade again.

  37. I heard about one gang of thieves who were stealing cars, stripping them back to the bare shell, and dumping them. Then buying the shell at auction, putting the bits back on, getting them revinned, and onselling them. Fucking lot of work though. Just get a job cunts. ffs!

  38. However, having said all that I must point out the glaringly obvious here; it is illegal to tamper with a vehicle identifier in any way, and that includes obliteration.
