  1. Wow- its been a while since I wrote some stuff about dirt, gorse and sheds. So here I am. It has been a busy last few months sorting out many things. I have not been working much in this time, well not paid work that is. I have certainly been on my feet rushing about here and there trying to get stuff done in some sort of order so we can start getting a little business going. What we want to do more than anything is just build or fix things for people from the comfort and convenience of our own workshop charging a fair enough rate that will allow us to continue on with a pretty cruisy relaxed lifestyle out here. I am sure that is what most here on oldschool want though- most I have met so far have not been chasing silly big monies but instead want enough to play with old cars and shit. So that's us. With this in mind I had to continue on getting the shed up and once it was up I have been full on trying to set it up neatly in fashion I've always wanted before taking on any proper 'paid' work. Sam will attest to this...his Celica has been sitting here for ages while I get stuff unpacked and sorted away. I promise you Sam that I will soon remove all them big chunks of air from your/Janes car and replace them with steel. Phew- that was a big chunk of words. Here's a photo.. Yep- that's our workshop all pretty much finished. The very eagle eyed will spot a few flashings missing. I have to finish them plus fit a really awesome cat themed wind vane my parents gave us. But yeah, the shed is up and what a relief that is! Its been a few months of ups and downs mainly to do with the shed supplier being totally useless. But that's all over now and in the past. So moving on its all inside fitting out work now. First thing was to get a heap of plywood delivered and line it out. This instantly transformed the feel! its also going to help heaps as extra bracing although the shed feels solid as without it. After the ply was up I built was a place to sit with our coffee and ponder ideas in the sunshine. Using a variety of Rimu bits kicking about I made this bench.. More recently I have parked a little breville espresso machine on top- one that my parents threw out because it leaks badly. I'll put up with that for nice coffee in the workshop Now I am part German. Only an eighth but I think enough to make me get off just a little on organisation, ergonomics and efficiency. At times, often, this conflicts with my mums she'll be right kiwi hippy cruisy slant. Hannah is also a tidy freak so the workshop has to be as well organised as possible. Especially if we want people to come along to see us and be potential customers. I hate messy workshops! I hate spending ages looking for tools or stock when it should be in its place and easy to find. Especially if a good customer is paying for this time. Not on in my book. So for the last few weeks in between entertaining guests and trying to enjoy some of this summer after missing out on December and much of Jan to building the workshop etc I have been organising all of our stuff. We had to make several trips over to Blenheim to help my parents move house. While there each time we would bring back a load of stuff that was stored there. We also took down the little plywood shed we had built before we started building the housetruck. All this stuff ended up in a big pile on the workshop floor. This pile had me in hives with the general messyness. Plus we had to make the place a little bit tidy for the visit from the smoking tire crew. So I made some big shelves. Many of the boxes my parents had used to move house were a perfect size for these shelves but they were covered in print as they got them from macdonalds. I turned them all inside out and re-glued them. Now I had a load of neat matched brown boxes. Awesome! So I organised shit and stacked shelves.. I also built a big sturdy bench. Then I covered the top with a sheet of 4mm thick steel. Its great. Really happy with it. You can see to the right in the above image a big steel table. That was the frame we found in the scrub next to the drive. Its burly and has industrial grade castor wheels with grease nipples. It was an awesome find. So I cleaned it up and welded the other half of the sheet of steel to it. So a 2.4 m long heavy roll around workbench. You could put a car on it. So cool. I love it. My last thing to build was something ive had in mind for ages- well before building the shed. I always find storing paint cans, spray cans, screws, bolts etc, seldom used special tools- all the little things that clog up shelves and work tops getting in the way. So I wanted to get this stored out of sight and safe from errant grinding or welding sparks. I built this unit. Made use of spare Rimu offcuts for the door.. which opens to this.. Yeah Im pretty happy with that it must be said. Amazing how much stuff it holds and how clear it makes every where else. We have built another bench- a bit smaller and with a Rimu top. Its in what will be the bicycle area. That area will be sectioned off and solely for our many pushbikes and keeping them on the road (or on the dirt..) Last night Hannah started varnishing the bench tops and the doors. They already look so much better after ust one thinned down prime coat.. Once the building has been signed off we'll start doing the electrics. We'll do as much as we can but will have to get an electrician to connect our switch board to the main meter box and then test/sign the lot off. Already have local guy who is helpful as. Later in the year we can start building the mezzanine floor. This I am really looking forward to! Plus looking forward to painting the plywood and finishing off all the doorways/windows etc with some feature wood. Other things have been happening away from the shed. WE moved the long drop away from where it was - which was a bit too close to the truck to be healthy. Up the hill a bit and in the bush surrounded by big ferns. This involved digging a deep hole- as deep as I could reach. My brother came over and helped us carry the booth up the hill. Its now in a much nicer place to take a dump! I added a vent and sealed up all the gaps and now it draws nicely up out of the vent and smells nice. well in a composty long drop sort of way. We have also been having a go at creating a succulent garden/area. Big thanks to Andre for the Yukkas and many succulents. Its looking pretty good so far and hopefully they will thrive in the hot little valley here. We have called this garden 'the garden of tat' because a friend gave us a pretty awful wood look carving of a lady sitting next to a wolf. Once it was placed down we have started discovering other gems and friends/family have given us other terrible tasteless ornaments. Dad gave us the concrete cast boy climbing up a log which I accidently broke in half. But then glued together with no more nails.. So to finish off this rather long post here are of our 'garden of tat'

  3. After years of steeling this from my father, a deal has been struck, and now the family vk is mine. It is a 1985 Holden HDT VK SS, has been in my family since 1992 and was the family car for many years before it got pushed to the back of the shed in about 1996 and left to sit, until about 2008 when I pulled it back out from the darkness. The rego had expired as dad didn't know he had to redo it every year, so after a revin, and replacing a few fuel related parts (don't leave your car full of gas for 12 years) and other bits and pieces that didn't like sitting for so long, it was all go again.

  5. I fixed my speedo! This was the problem (or at least the last remaining problem of multiple problems): A connector on the back of the instrument cluster, only partially unplugged for the photo. Just cos something's plugged in on this car doesn't mean it works. Finally, more than eight years after the speedo first started playing up, I'll once again know my fuel economy and how fast I was going, officer. I had this figured out maybe a month ago, but I just got around to soldering wires directly to that little board to bypass the dodgy plug. Eventually it would be good to do a proper job and build my own PCB, eliminating all of the layers of that stupid flexible plastic with the copper tracks on. In celebration of sorting this out, I'm thinking I'll do all of Nats in the Alfa rather than trying to trailer my SD1.

  12. Aluminium will corrode so you'll either have to polish them regularly to keep them looking good, or clearcoat them so they stay good. Don't cheap out on the coat though or they'll look yuck.

  14. along with my shitty CG110 ive been procrastinating with forever, i could not resist this thing's charm at Big Al's motorcycle wreckers in palmy was a recovered stolen bike from somewhere around levin, hence the ignition has been pried away at with a flathead. cannot fault it though, rides like an absolute dream. and everything works! am putting it off re-vinning until i can source moar funds and once i get my licence. even made it to Old School Palmy meet last night! im not the only one with one of these bad boys on OS and have been loving everyone's builds. got rid of a whole bunch of gay shit off the rear end. mudguard will go back on for wof spec. slapped on skateboard seat base for a giggle, and it looks rad. also bought some low rise bars from the modern motorcyle company. getting seat covered and wider tyres will probs be my next investments. also waiting for good friend Mitch to get to cashies status at his new job to fab me up an expansion chamber. long term i would like to remove dash and relocate ignition, thankfully helmet covers it in the photo haha. want it looking something like this has anyone seen this? saw it on instagram and buzzed at the NZ plate. hopefully have more updates soon! would love to know what you guys think and what i should do to it

  16. I do not approve of this collective pooping. Your mice are cute though. Good call on leaving them for the food chain to take care of. Isn't so cool to kill things just because you don't like them. Even struggle with killing spiders, the worlds scariest occupant. Flies are the exception to this. All flies must die. Also, you are the king of getting shit done. So impressive.

  26. After noticing a series of loud clicking noises coming from the emissions "rats' nest" on top of the engine in time with the part-throttle hesitation/idle flutter I've been trying to chase down, I arranged to borrow a couple of Hitachi vacuum solenoids for diagnostic purposes: If they make a difference I'll be teeing up a bunch of replacements as soon as possible. The 12A turbo only has three solenoids compared to the US-spec 12A carby in the link above that has six. Discussion: http://oldschool.co....showtopic=27846

  27. Dud compressor clutch bearing extracted. Pictured (on the left) next to one I got from another compressor (with a different style clutch) I had in the shed. It seems to be a fairly common part to the york/tecumseh compressor. Have ordered a new one from Mana Bearings to pick up on Monday. Put the other old one in for now, which seems to work fine, so took another test drive, and actually made it home OK. Need to tinker with the brakes in the weekend, but it's time for a beer now.

  28. This has been going on for years man. I've called you out on this shit before and got told off by various people on here for it, but it honestly looks like the tide has turned. Either sell the fucking things or go see a doctor to sort your head out. Or both. No human should be so reliant on some internet cunt saying they did good. Something has happened to you in the past to make you think that approach is appropriate, and while that sucks, you need to take some responsibility for the sake of your credibility and dignity. You're not a victim mate, understand that. You own multiple rad cars, a house, have a great job and live in the best fucking country in the world. I have like $200 to my name, get paid fuck all, am almost 30 and still studying/reliant on my family/the government, own a fucking shitbag of a car with no WOF or rego, am losing my hair, can't get a tinder like to save myself, had some fucking shitty things that no person should have to deal with happen to me in my life and I don't give a fuck. I went and talked to a professional when things got bad and sorted it out. I find joy in opening a shitty lion brown on Friday afternoon or looking out my window at a rad as shit country or just nailing a crisp cover drive in backyard cricket. And that's just me, some white asshole living in Wellington NZ. Think of all the people in this world who find satisfaction in shit like having clean water or not being murdered walking to school. Get some goddamn perspective. Fuck you are frustrating as all fuck.

  31. Ideally for the Beach Hop. I need to fix the compressor then get a wheel alignment. Brakes were working, but felt not great. I only bled them by the drip method as missus was out last night - will get her to do some pumping in the weekend. Might need to steal the Wilwood proportioning valve off the Morrie project. Otherwise only needs a couple of brake line clamps and a cover for the wiring hole in the boot for cert (at least that is what I hope). Exhaust is just tacked in a couple of joints and is banging somewhere over the axle too. Might be at Andy Smith's on Tuesday if I can sort the compressor.

  37. No pictures as I couldn't find the camera, Replaced all the front wheel studs tonight, I thought it was too easy so timed it. 23 mins to jack it up, pull drums & hub off, smack out the old studs and smack in the new adjust the shoes and slap the wheel back on. Since that went so easily I thought I'd attack the non working washer pump had tp pull all the old brittle air con ducting out along with the radio and ash tray. Ipulled it out and put the seal kit in it. still didn't work and all the hoses are split and perished. I'll cheat and put a universal inline pump in it tomorrow and get some new hoses

  41. Been going hard on this lately but been slack with the updates. With some help from my Partners father we straigtened the diff. Got it to 1mm toe out and the was measured over a metre or so so stuff all really and 0 camber so much better than a factory one. Painted it all up and thats ready to go. Also got this for the diff, no shithouse shimmed hilux lsd going in this car If the car is ever to run 10's I need to either have a steel bellhousing or a scatter shield or blanket. Ive opted for a blanket due to the pain in the assness of making a 1/4" plate shield and also the actual weight of the thing. The blanket is kinda a pain in the ass due to the slave cylinder but ive made a shield that bolts to it so the balnket will go around it without affecting the operation of the slave and fork. I finally got my engine back which meant I could start putting everything back together. I wrapped the manifold and exhaust and got a blanket for the turbo and started putting everything back together. Starting to look like an engine bay again. I then finished off the rest of the exhaust, or lack thereof, because drag car, and also the screamer pipe, which was acually a bastard as I havent left myself alot of room down there. Happy with the end result though, its going to be quite loud.... And then proceded to do all of the little annoying jobs to get it all finished. As of yesterday I have the engine bay around 98% finished. Wired up the plugs for the ID1000's yesterday and put them and the fuel rail back in etc. All thats left in the engine bay now is a throttle cable which I need to get shortened and hook up the fuel lines and a couple vacuum hoses, but otherwise complete. Next step, make it all work.
