  1. Discussion Thread So I managed to steal a KP bugeye off of an old lady today. She owned it for 20 years and one week. Total KMs are unknown, odo currently says 60,000. She did 30,000 in the 20 years she had owned it. It is a KP60 so should have a 2K in it. I had prepared myself to endure the mega slow that is associated with this fact. When I arrived at the house to pick it up I took a quick look at the engine and the block was red - a bit surprising "aren't 3K blocks red?" briefly went through my mind. The engine was caked in grime so I didn't dig in and look. So anyway, I handed over the cash, gave the old lady a hug (she was pretty sad about losing her baby) and hit the road. After about two seconds I realized that something was up. The car was faster than my Sprint. I kept driving and made it home without any mishaps, gave it jandal a couple of times and enjoyed the speed. I was trying to come up with a logical argument along the lines of "it has small tyres and a 3.9 diff, the Sprint has huge tyres and a 3.5 diff so that will probably make up most of the difference", but I was also thinking "this feels nothing like any 2K I've driven". A reflexive smile formed on my face. I got home and the first thing I did was took a look at the engine block. "Hmmm, there is no lug where the engine number usually is! What about up front?" So I looked at the front of the block and saw nothing except a sort of flatish area of black grime. I rubbed away at it for a few minutes and first I saw some numbers and then I saw a K and then I saw a 3. "Ooooooohhh this explains the power." It would appear that the engine was changed in 1996 and the car was never certified - "Why would you even certify a shitty 3K??!" I hear you say - and somehow the car made it through 40 WoFs without ever getting pulled up for it. I doubt it will ever be pulled up for it so the engine shall stay. The car leaks oil almost as badly as if someone had drilled a hole in it. I'm going to replace as many seals as I can and try to stem the flow. The front guards are a little manky from the old lady driving into cars/walls/people over the years so I am going to repair them - they look to be rust free. The doors have a little bit of rust along their bottom edges, the passenger one looks pretty much fine so I will probably leave it. I'm going to get the rust removed from the drivers door. There is some rust around the hatch window, a very small amount albeit. I'll get this done at the same time as the door/s. The passengers side of the car has been rubbed a fair bit by her driveway shrub over the years so could do with a decent buffing. The seats could probably do with an upholstering. The brake booster and surrounding area need new paint due to some sort of brake leak in the past. It doesn't look like there are any rust holes, or even very much surface rust in the area though. Here's a lame image of the car: It's the same colour as the Sprint, which will make storing paint cans easy. The only issue is that it is a difficult colour to mix accurately. I'll take some good photos tomorrow when I start working on it. I think the very top of the list will be the diff pinion seal and the upper engine seals. And about 30 litres of degreaser. Future (distant) plans: -Restore to as good of a condition as I can -Maybe upgrade brakes and suspension -Cert if I upgrade brakes and suspension I'll most likely have to sell the car before I move back to Auckland so I would like to get it into as good of a condition as possible by November. It might grow on me and I could end up keeping it. TLDR: My girlfriend buggered off to brass band nationals for the week so I bought a car without telling her. She might kill me when she gets back, but at least I have a 3K.

  2. I spent today cleaning the yuck off of the engine, giving it a tune up, flushing the cooling system and replacing the pinion seal on the diff. Cleaning the yuck off the engine was a huge job. It looks like the valve cover gasket started leaking about 20 years ago and was never addressed. There was oil everywhere. In some places it was over 2 cm thick! I scraped off probably about 5 kg of it by the end and used 6 or 7 cans of degreaser and a bucket of laundry powder/water mix. After: Before: The pictures really don't illustrate just how bad it was. I should have taken a picture of the underside of the car. The cooling system was just filled with rusty water - not cool! The heater core was almost entirely blocked and it took a solid forty five minutes of flushing to get it flowing freely and have no more orange colour to the water. I filled it with a mix of green coolant and water. The heater works well now. The diff pinion seal was leaking so I swapped that out for a new one. Hopefully it lasts a while. The diff may need to come apart at some point as it has quite a lot of backlash. Other than that the diff is actually really good, it is nice and quiet. I also put new oil in the diff. The engine has a bit of a rumbling sound in it. Could this be main bearings? I'll pull the accessories belt tomorrow and see if that stops the noise. It's definitely not a knocking sound. I adjusted the choke cable and set the idle speed and idle mixture - I had to wind the idle mixture screw in about 15 turns. Whoever set it last time was a numpty, spark plugs were kind of blackish from running rich. This weekend's job will be to tackle the damaged paint surfaces from where brake fluid leaked out in the past. The car also needs some low at some point in the future. It is ridiculously high. Here are some more pictures of the car:

  5. much fucking around waiting for parts and changing my mind on things has resulted in it still not going yet. however the motor is in the car for permanent (this time round) and the only major bit I'm missing at this point is the intake manifold. so, whats been done? modify and strengthen the gearbox crossmember mount to bring it up to current cert regs head has been hardness tested, cleaned and reassembled with new stem seals. valves re-seated and stage 2 BC cams fitted. powerhouse racing pulley kit ATI harmonic balancer titan adjustable cam gears gates blue cam belt NZ EFI ultra high output coils with built in igniters other things. the block came with no engine number so i thought id better put one on it so i can identify it if i need to for whatever reason. 2016-07-13_05-58-18 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-07-13_08-41-27 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-07-13_08-43-57 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-07-13_08-44-10 by sheepers, on Flickr

  9. I'd been looking for some kind of sweet coupe type thing for the last ~3 years or so. 348s were high on the list of ideal vehicles, but I was also keen on 456, 512, 911, Cayman. 348s and 456s seemed to disappear off the face of the earth when I was ready to buy. 911s skyrocketed in price. Caymans seemed a bit too bland, and 512s a bit extreme. I'm still a little bit annoyed for not buying a mint $25k 964 in 2013 because it was a C4 and not a C2, and I'd just bought a Megane turbo. So last year I said "bugger it" and bought this 4.3 V8 Vantage. It's a 380hp V8, 6-speed transaxle manual thing. Goes alright, sounds alright. It's the earliest, lowest power version of the Vantage. Later on, they tweaked the 4.3 to get more power, then went to a 4.7 with even more power, and a V12 version is also available. It has VE SS inspired holes in the front guards, a Ford Mondeo inspired front grill, and a Jaguar radiator fan shroud. The best of all three worlds.

  10. I've always liked high vehicles and standard ride height because I am actually an old man. I also hurl abuse at Richy because he has ruined his Triumph puhuhuhu

  17. For anyone elses reference - I tested the Defi sensors and they're 5v so piggybacking them will be the way to go. Also found someone had spent the time to collect data on the Defi sensors so should make calibration in the Link easy http://bbs.22b.com/forums/showthread.php?8223-Defi-Sensor-Calibration-Curves

  27. Yea, thought I was onto a winner with the v57 block but no dice.Have heard of thick wall examples coming out of industrial appilacations, forklifs and gen sets. And yes Im well aware that using the l28 block would be much eaisier but i want to go bigger then 3.1l and looking more then 90mm of stroke. Sooo... have hacked up a few cranks,An RB30 and ld28 crank. Options are to offset grind using smaller journal rod, 45mm out of a honda that looked like it would work or new custom cank.I just installed a large churchill grinder in my workshop that should be suitiable this project i think?

  28. Bright and early this morning, time to piss off the neighbors (one set of which truly deserves it). I went around and cleaned up where i was going to cut, easier to do it now with a flattish surface.. Some extra tasty swiss cheese. Then I got to cutting using a bit of 50x25 sitting on the gutter as a guide; Then I propped up one side and got the forklift hard up against the bus, and lifted it off.... At this point I cackled quite a lot. I can stand up in it now. The lip left below my cut held quite a bit of that cheesy goodness, so I cut it off where applicable - this got rid of 95% of the grot; Then I took most of the windows out as I reckoned it would be less chance of getting damaged. I had to drill out some screws, the last screw popped through, knocked the window which fell out onto the concrete Rather fortunately nothing broke, altho the frame is a bit bent, but whatevs, stoked. Then I bought it inside the workshop and rust converted everything I could see. I cannot help but wish that I was turning this into a sweet ute.... Also the edge of that bit of roof left had been repaired in the time honored fashion; 2014 was a good year for soggy newspaper and bog filling materials :) I thought I had better leave the rust converter to do it's thing so that's it for the day.

  29. Finally got my pedal box mounted courtesy of a day of being at home sick from work. Had to recces it slightly to get feet position right and give me some adjust ability in the seat so shorter people could drive it. I think it turned out pretty good. Today's mission is to get the dash bar tacked up in place and start working on mounting the dash/cutting it up. Also working towards mounting my new dash. I kept going round in my head trying to justify spending the money on a racepak or similar digital dash and I just couldn't bring myself to spend the money (the inner jew showing). So I started researching motorbike dashes and it turns out they are substantially better looking and more functional. Got this off a Honda VTR1000 Fireblade and with a few mods it should sit nicely above the steering wheel. Bonus is it revs to 9500RPM redline so should be perfect for the 2zz. Not sure about the 280km/h speedo though. definately won't be using all of that! I trimmed the rear section off so it can be flush mounted in a panel. Will figure out how to mount it once I've got a steering column to place it on.

  30. Oh. That was like 15 years ago and the doctor had put his finger in my bum before I went to see it at the movies so the main thing I remember about F&F is the weird feeling of having a wet lubed bum that doesn't go away by wiping it with toilet paper and farts that don't make any sound.

  31. Maybe it's so slow because the back wheels are on backwards. They've still got 40,000 km of inertia in the other direction stored in them.

  33. Stay in school. Don't do drugs. Although, I'm currently unemployed, and I just unwisely spent/invested a good chunk of house deposit money on a 27 year old car so I'm probably not a very good role model. Also, to put it in perspective, 348s and Vantages only cost about the same as a double cab SR5 Hilux with a few options so you definitely don't need to be a millionaire.

  34. It was a Singapore import so I got the same digits as the old Singapore plate. It was a bit stupid but I just wasn't keen on a standard issue J plate for no real rational reason.

  35. It failed compliance on a broken door release cable. There's a surprising amount of DIY resources like workshop manuals, parts catalogues, and forum guides on these, thankfully. The wheels are directional - the thick side of the spoke is supposed to be towards the front. At some point, someone has mixed up the rear wheels. It came with this lush briefcase of Ferrari paint tin lid openers and some flat tyre wind with an F40 on the can. It's quite low. Doors are amusingly thick. Supermarket car parks might be tricky. It feels really strange sitting so inboard of the edge of the car.

  37. yep so she's back on the road, little bit of an update eh. - a bunch of rust needed doing, plenty more to go. sills etc. - front short shocks, Ultima, from online auto parts aussie site - had some standard KYBs floating around for the rear. glad i didnt cut the original shock mounts out during the hydro process! - whiteline swaybar and bushes, as above - new spring packs care of Archers springs, Rotorua. - thermostat, first time in years - fan shroud, first time ever - went back to the muzzy rims with some maxxis 175/70 14 biccies - new rear brake lines - super-drone side exit exhaust managed to stay, yeah! it drags round left handers under the right circumstances - stoked. - cleaned all the paint off the front end trim. fuck it drives so sweet now (for what it is), best it ever has. still a bunch of niggles but pretty happy with it. the new springs are great but came down a whole bunch during the trip to Wagnats. a little unusual for new ones. anyway, just got them back from HG Inghams blacksmiths in the Hutt. i dropped off the springs and my old main leaves on monday, by tuesday's end i had them back in the car with the old main leaf added to the pack, and all reset to suit. will get it out for a drive tonight but from standing on the towbar the car is noticeably stiffer, and only sits a half inch higher at the back, unloaded. loading up a bunch of shit and a Hemi2doz in the front and driving it for a week/nats should be a good test!
