  1. So have not driven the car at all over winter due to doing stupid stuff like building a new house and moving etc. But one bonus is built a decent shed to fill with cars... Have lots of small things to do to the car over summer. New jets for the triples to test, LSD to go in etc. One small thing I have done is convert my speedo. Being as my car is originally from the the USA it had a MPH speedo which was a bit of a pain in the ass. I found a guy in Sweden who had designed his own re-pro KMPH face plates and had done a small production run so bought one to give a try. The quality is not to bad so I stripped down my old speedo and swapped over the faces. I now have a KMPH version so all good. I also swapped out the old clock in the dash as it has never worked. I found an oil temp gauge with a similar look to the stock gauges. LSD install next on the list.

  3. Discussion thread //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/50845-oftensideways-83-family-camper-discussion/ Hey guys, So i've been hanging around the forums a fair bit still but have been real slack on any form of contribution. Theres been no lack of projects in the shed to be fair (many of the drifting variety), but I find myself changing between so many that i never felt i could really document them very well or when I thought I should I had already made a decent start and thought it was to late. ANYWAY, now we have two young boys i felt a fitting project was in order. we'd love to spend a bit of time traveling around the place taking family holidays when we can. A new van just wasn't going to cut it and it turned out a guy I know through a customer of mine happened to have the perfect thing parked up on there lawn heading no where fast! He assured me it was running perfect when parked but they had no use for it. I turned up to have a good look over it, covered in tree leaves and grime but the potential was there! Turns out the rego has lapsed so for $400 we loaded it up and hauled it away to store untill now. The camper needs its fair share of work, plenty of rust to fix but very little appears to be structural, get the motor sorted, the brakes and suspension up to scratch. The inside is all there but isn't going to suit our needs so I will have to redo the entire rear section, we need a good sized bed, secure points to strap the kids car seats in and most likely an arrangement in the front seats for a small child to sleep. The stripes WILL stay. The pop top is the sweetest thing i've ever seen. I've also aquired a crashed 3sge altezza so that motor may make its way into the bay, Let me know your thoughts. The most important part of any project, picures

  6. Sooooo..... Im new to this kinda thing, and have never done anything like this on a forum and ill must likely muck it all up... But here goes. Ive owned this car for a while now... Coming up four years. And up until February of this year it was my Daily driver. 4k with obligatory ram flow for maximum sucking of hot air... And 5 speed for gentile cruising at 98 kmph.. or 75kmph when fully loaded on way to Dorkland when I moved there Last year for a brief (9month) working holiday... Now when I say this car was my daily I mean I took it everywhere including on a solo tiki tour of the upper north island over labour weekend last year.. Yes yes I took her to cape Reinga ... Ahhh the memories.... Btw the Mangamuka Gorge Such a sweet road in the starlet!!!!!! Here are a couple of photos from that trip to the cape... But anyway enough of that crap I decided at the beginning of the year that she was coming off the road.. The supercharger whine coming from the gearbox was getting a touch on the annoying side.... And certain rust issues that I had been "fixing" Needed to be attended to Properly... So i purchased a new car (ae95 Wagon of Jap spec coolness) And the poor KP has sat on my parents drive waiting patiently for me to secure working space for her......... And that time has come... In the form of me buying my first house... (great time to start a project when I'm gonna be student type broke but hey can't afford to drink. So may as well spend my time with a flappy disk and a grinder!) Plans for the KP 1st things 1st RUST... She sure has her fair share of it! Some in the firewall/ strut tower area passenger side. I had cut this out but it seems to be back.. #isuck Small amount of superficial stuff in the bottom of the B pillar drivers side which when I attack will no doubt became a massive Hole.... And then there is the C pillars/ bottom of boot area/ seam behind rear bumper... Ive done all kinds of great patches over the years for wofs... but this area needs some MAJOR work..... Dreading it Apart from that she's Great body wise..... Secondly Will be the running gear... Ive hummed and hummed over this for the last year or so... shall I keep it K series worked 4k 7kturbo bla de bla.. Or shall I go 12a BP Matty b and 18inch vaults......... But I've firmly decided I will be going down the the route of the 4agte... Ive recently Bought Seedys turbo gear.... so no backing out now!! Still I'm in of need everything. Motor, Gbox, Diff, ECU etc etc etc etc etc. So I'm now starting the process of piecing together everything I need.. Ive found a 7 rib block, gze pistons, some form of crank and a big port head for a good price but I'm open to all offers at the moment... Soo if you fine lads know of any parts that would help me in the process that would be Greatly appreciated!!! So yeah thats the start of whats going to be a Long process one imagines!!!! Cheers, Crang ... oh btw please place abuse, knowledge, motivational messages here.. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/50839-crangs-1983-kp61-of-much-rust-and-future-d00000000rt-fffffffpttttchhh/ Thanks in advance!!

  9. Oil Filter There was no filter on this when I got it, I could have used the drop-in type that sits in the oil tank, but I prefer the automotive style spin-on jobs, plus at the time I was looking at making a new oil tank... I bought a 3/4" x 19 tpi bolt and some BSP connectors and spun up a mount that would bolt up to the front engine plate, just turned a lump of 100 x 10mm m/s plate... And drilled and tapped the 3/4" bolt, and turned the barbs off the hose-type connectors... There was no easy way round this, just used cutoff discs and files to shape the thing... And finished the surfaces on the old Myford... Welded in the centre piece, tapped the inlet/outlet connector tubes, and cut some recesses to fit around the engine plate bolts... and painted... I use a Bosch 3300 filter, has the right pressure settings for the old ironhead (a low pressure, high flow system). Pretty pleased how this turned out, but took a bit of effort...

  12. So, a bit of history on this thing. Bought it about 4 years ago sight unseen from a DJ in Dunedin, organised to meet him in Wellington to finalise details, and drive it up to Auckland! As I was boarding a flight to wellington I received a call saying the car had run a big end by Blenheim, apparently because the turbo seals had gone and shat most of the oil out the exhaust! not fun. Results below: Weldy weldy. Towed it to Auckland, where the donk was removed and sat in a sorry state while the engine was slowly pieced back together with a new crank, forged H-beam rods, forged pistons and s15 t28. After too long the mighty CA went back in the hole, a little shinier. essentially, it had a whole metric shit-ton of teething issues, rust in the fuel tank clogging the vr4 injectors, bad tune, awful looking engine bay. Over the next couple of years, I tweaked it here and there, re-sealing the fuel tank (not fun!) new injectors, tune, new turbo, new cams, cam gears, and so on and so forth. It went from this: to this: Now with a fan shroud. (sorry for big pics, will work on it) Specs as of right now: CA18det (forged) standard crank Balanced/ matched rotating assembly 269/8.7mm cosworth grind cams, Garrett GTX2863r Turbosmart 38mm wastegate Parts shop max Hi-mount intercooler 1000cc Deatschwerks injectors 320lph deatschwerks fuel pump Tomei FPR All engine paint + cam cover etc done by me. Catch can by C's garage. Estimated 220kw atw.( no dyno yet!) So now my dilemma is whether to go to a link ECU or stick to the standard CA ecu which can barely keep up with my injectors ( 8 bit lyf!)

  19. pulled the front end out to give it a clean up, the total loss oiling system has kept the parts under this grim in good nick, but its so gross. boots on the ball joints are unfortunately split, (putting good thick coating of dry grease on EVERYTHING but they feel like they are in good order. I will worry about them later, they may be able to be re-booted. Cut the blind splines in the torsion bars to lower the front - FIAT has helpfully done 2/3 of it already about 20 seconds of being very careful with the cut off wheel in the grinder later not exactly machined, but they slotted in one spline lower first time The battery on my camera ran out but I got one shot of all the front end tidied up and ready to go back in: Ive installed most of that it back in pending a few parts still to arrive. EDIT: ReInstalled front suspension - note the split ball joint boots :/ Looking forward to getting it back on its wheels

  21. So a problem that some people have with triple Mikunis is a slight lean spot or 'stutter' when you stab on the gas. My car has always had this same issue so wanted to try and get rid of it if possible. It is more noticeable when the car is hot and has been idling in traffic for a while. After doing some reading it sounds like it is caused by fuel in the accelerator pumps boiling and thus not providing enough fuel when you initially hit the gas. Lots of people fit heat shields under the carbs to keep them a bit cooler so I thought Id give it a go too. Made up an alloy shield which while hopefully helping with keeping heat off the carbs will also have the added bonus of stopping any fuel leaks from dripping onto the hot extractors. My 44s also came with additional cooling blocks attached to the accelerator pumps (Thanks to Mike for pointing out what these things actually were). Apparently they were used in racing applications back in the day? I figure if I have them might as well use them right. I took a fuel feed from the in and out of the fuel rail and plumed in the cooling blocks. Yes there is way too much AN fitting action going on, I think I might make a proper fuel rail up to get rid of some of it... Here you can see the fuel line under each carb linking the circuit together. Everything back together with heat shield added. Happy to say it looks to have completely resolved the lean spot on initial throttle stab. If anything now the wide-band is showing things are a bit rich but that's something I can possibly tune out with some jet changes. Car no longer stumbles when you first hit the gas so I am claiming a win...

  22. I bought this car as a rolling body the week my oldest son was born. The agreement with the wife was it could come home as soon as the bathroom was finished. Another son, house renovations and life got in the way and the car got ignored for about 6 years. I did occasionally think about the car and put a plan into place. I saw an article in Street Machine mag about a guy who put an LH Torana front end under an EK Holden. It didn't look too difficult and one turned up on trade me a couple of weeks later. That was the start of buying bits to fix the car and a good friend came over and we ripped into it. We found lots of good stuff, like the floor pans the were rotten and had sheets of steel pop riveted and braised in place. Thank you Holden for the built in rust traps of rubber flooring with sound deadening underneath to hold moisture and make rust. Amazingly the rest of the car and the usual rust spots are really good. The car has been off the road since 1989 and that is what saved it. Back to the plan. The LH Torana front is in the car, there is an injected 5Litre from a VT commodore sitting on my engine stand waiting for the HQ sump and pickup to be fitted. The engine has a 4 speed auto with it. I found a narrowed HZ ute diff that is under the car. The steering column is out of a LC Torana, its the column auto one. In my world the right place for the gear lever with a V8 and auto is the column, especially with a bench seat. Here is what I started with

  24. HI guys! Long time lurker new poster. just moved down to Christchurch and thought I should join the wonderful world of oldschool! Unfortunately I do not own anything oldschool anymore as my KP61 sprint is no longer with me . But I like the community on here very much so I hope you'll let me stay! booo! No oldschool? Well I have decided as my rego ran out last week, to do a full refurbish/slight restomod on this: It made the drive from Auckland to CHCH without a sweat and the mighty CA18det is going strong on 18psi with mad overtaking skills yo. Plans are: Full refurbishment of chassis/arms/bushes/underseal get the interior super lush make it a nice street car instead of a beat up s chassis that "d0ez mad skudzz ow" Ca will make 250-280kw when tuned. never take it drifting and have a lush 200 when all the rest of them are F****d Also have a fetish for rare JDM parts, have these coming: Will be ditching the A-techs to whoever pays me cash money and having it look like this: 15x7-8s and some nice clean body. Still on the lookout for wheels. So yeah! Will start ripping into the build soon. Thanks guys! (p.s sorry if the pics don't work, doing this from mobile so will fix them tonight!)

  34. I also purchased this not so long ago It's a 1959 Morris Minor 1000. The previous owner had installed disc brakes up front. While not even remotely necessary, they do provide a few extra gasps of delight from Morris Minor weirdos enthusiasts when they learn of such high performance modifications. The fuel tank was spiked which is a bit silly really as Morris Minors actually have a bung in the bottom of the tank to allow the fuel to be drained. So I sourced another fuel tank, threw it into the car and managed to get it fired up. It runs and drives rather well. The car now has its front end re-assembled and last night I dropped it off to be used in an upcoming film. Pretty happy that it has ended up paying for itself. The plan is to fix the minor rust and tidy it up a bit, get it road legal, install a tow bar and use it to tow the Morris Minor BBQ Trailer Also, I did a mean one wheel peel in this car last night. Left a mark about a metre long.

  35. Oh you will be taking a fair amount of money from me in the near future haha. Speaking of which, I need a set of semaphores/trafficators for the Morris Minor. I see that on your website you have new lenses and bulbs but no complete units. Is this something you can source?

  36. Here are a couple of pictures of the SD1 as it currently sits. I haven't really driven it much, mainly to and from film shoots around Auckland where the car has started to pay for itself. I do however take it for the odd howl around the local airport. It really is a shame that the 2.6 six cylinder can never be properly fixed. It's noisy and truck-like at low revs but sounds like a 1960s Italian GT car when my foot is deep in the blue carpet. I would love to keep it six cylinder but I just know that it will fail spectacularly. Because the car is actually really enjoyable to drive, I want it to be at least reliable enough to take away on weekends. So the V8 will have to do the job.

  37. HELLO EVRYBODY! So I've removed all the crap from the window frame and side, with the deft hand of a skilled surgeon. By which I mean I pulled it off with pliers. Which reveled a small amount of rot in the very bottom of the roof gutters. A little bit of bog and a weird hole someone had punched? After drilling out the spot welds that hold it on, the inside panel was finally removed, I didn't take a pic, there was a fair bit of krusty krap in between the two layers of metal, so again, I'm glad I did this. After spending a solid 5 hours grinding, sanding and blasting, this and a fucked sandblaster is the result. rusty tail ends bobbed I got this far with the other panels before the blaster died. I also made a what is for me a rather exciting discovery, tucked way up inside the roof cavity. a scrap of the factory aussie headliner, one of the very few things that I know is original to this car. Moving on, I made some patches for the gutters, this was harder that I thought it would be! the metal gently rolls up, then has the sharp crease were it folds over. looks okay now. I have also welded up the drill holes in the rear wondow frame, and couple other small holes and now it's ready for the panels to be welded back in. I'm going to see if i can get the two grill panels pro blasted, so until that happens I might have a wee rest.

  40. Kapow. This is some next level shit if I do say so myself. Still needs finishing touches but you get the idea. Main box area will be cladded and need a few more slats for the top. Top hinges up for storage underneath, and plenty off room down the side for hauling bikes etc. When its party time, the top slides out to reveal double bed. Matress will be split down the middle but still atatched so it will just fold in half.

  43. I went down to the Panel Shop yesterday to have a look at progress. They have started with the rotten rear section, all the cavities that Holden never painted from new. Some nice work being done, I did have to remind Phil, the guy actually doing the work this is not a show car and the underside will get a nice thick coat of underseal. Has to be functional, not beautiful. It makes a huge difference being able to walk around under the car on a hoist, much better than on your back while is on jack stands. The ETA for finishing is a couple of months, this is their fill in job to keep the costs down for me. I promise photos next time I go for a look.

  44. I swung by the Panel Shop to get a couple of photos to prove that the car has moved. Time to get the bonnet and front panels stripped of the should be shiny bits and off to be blasted. I keep forgetting how small these cars really are, especially now there is some space around it. Lastly I have bought a modified chip for the VT 5litre I have to go in from a Guy named Tony off trademe. The big thing is the chip has the VATS disabled. The tune should take the motor close to HSV specs. This should be fun, 190 Kw in a car that weighs 1200 kg with 215 tyres on the back..

  45. Finally got my act together and worked on the car today. My brother in law gave me a hand and we go the doors bolted on ready for it to go to the panel shop this week. Amazing what some doors do to the look of the car. I also played around with the front brakes. I was given a pair of callipers that apparently came off WB holden. They are PBR and all cast iron. They also don't fit on and LH Torana front end. The Aluminium body callipers that the HZ's got are the same as a UC Torana with a bigger spacer in the middle. I have a set on the front of the Firebird that may have to be given a new home. I have been looking for an excuse to buy the reproduction GM 4 wheel disc conversion for the Firebird and this might be it. I keep forgetting how small this thing is and how light the doors and guards are. Not having side intrusion bars, sound deadening and all the other modern crap like air-conditioning and electric windows makes a huge difference. Off to the panel shop on Thursday as long as the weather gods play nicely. Its been out of the rain for 20 years and I want to keep it that way, at least until it gets real paint and windows
