  1. Hard on the heels of the 175/50/13 failure, I bought a set of 175/60/13 Yokohama A539. Now order is restored, and (I think) it looks really good. Plan is to add a TRD style hatch spoiler, I think it should have a proper little Japanese street hooner vibe about it! IMG_6862 by Richard Opie, on Flickr IMG_6868 by Richard Opie, on Flickr Much more snug in the guards, closed up the guard gap. Added some camber to the front end and clearance is plenty! 5. This is finished! I took it to the firewood pile this afternoon and gave it a good work out. It works great! Fast and powerful, it chomps through the knotted pieces of wood with ease. The tables are a good size and height Dave and I had no problems stacking blocks on it we split probably fiveish? cubic meters of old pine and gum, on about two thirds of a tank of petrol, in about two hours. The engine doesn't even need to be on full RPM. It doesn't have WOF and Reg yet but that's not a problem we'll sort that out next season. Project finished. WIN!

  6. Shed's all tidy and I'm still waiting for stuff to turn up for other projects so I can make some progress, so I might as well do something. This is a rebuild on one of 2 Faema E61 Legend's that are sitting in the shed slowly decomposing. I'm going to post lots of pics for a couple of reasons such as a bit of info for someone else wanting to fix their own machine or that whenever people take their coffee machine to the repairers, they feel like they've been ripped off, in some cases that may be true, generally these machines need a ton of work when they haven't had regular maintenance. I've chosen a machine that's typical of a couple of years of no servicing and bad practices when being used.(will explain later) edit: ok this one is fairly grotty now I've opened it up So here we have it, a reasonably common and well loved machine by Barista's all over the world, it's circa 2001 (not the original 1960's one that cost moonbeams to buy now), but still a well respected machine.

  9. I bet the owner was wondeing why it was so slow to heat up Might be in luck, most of the lime scale is in a muddy state, it hasn't set rock hard and most of it just washes off with a hose. Comparing the water from the boiler to last night's picture it shows that most of the lime scale is being carried in the water.

  11. Had my first event on the weekend, just a wee gravel autocross, car went really well. Had a bit of temp creep at the end of the day so suspecting a mildly blown HG so will whip the head off this week. Things to do before next event are get rid of the bloody locked diff cos it's shit and sledges and makes your butt pucker coming off the gas downhill and to also get a better ratio diff as it has a bonneville salt flat spec 3.7 which is a million times too tall. I didn't realise starlets even came with a 3.7! Anyway vid for lols, yea I come off the gas a bit but it was my first event. Also take it easy on the sweeping uphill right hander before the oil drums as its really easy to get tied up on the in bend and the other side has a lake at the bottom of a short cliff. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=M9CSi0zU4ZU

  12. Time to drain the boiler so I can pull it out and inspect, normally you'd do this in place but indications are that I'll need to strip a pile of crap out from inside. Here's better view of the water, I'll keep it for the shed tour and the one to drink it gets some beers.

  16. Happened to be in Auckland for a sales meeting so I called into Cardwells to have a look at the aforementioned QA1 shocks... Fast forward a few minutes and my race fund had been relieved of its slight surplus and I had a smile on my face. In the words of the wise Tom Misa, they "ticked all the boxes" so I didn't have to think twice about taking them home. I assumed the thread on the top and the eyelet size would be different to the Koni shocks, but it turns out they are exactly the same! So provided the adjusters clear the diff housing/mounting bracket they will be a bolt in item. Win! This means my rattle can refresh of the engine might have to wait a bit longer as I feel these need to be tested... Perhaps at the August round of Taupo dual sprints?

  23. Shroud is getting close - Any suggestions on a clear coat that wont melt ? The guy who has done the cf work is a boat builder, so not quite sure what to coat it with. Anyway its looking pretty schmicky, just bonding the mount and a bit of tickling up this week and we should be done...

  24. Wasn't overly stoked on how yellow the paint came out. So I've taken a cup of CATERPILLAR dozer paint from work so ill re spray it with that. Also dunked the sump, rocker covers and intake manifold in the alkaline tanks at work they should be sweet tomorrow morning

  31. Here's a close up of the group head, despite looking quite pitted, I think they'll come up ok with a polish and cleaned out internally. There's a few dents in the chrome but it's not worth the hassle getting it fixed. A peek inside the rear cover shows that the leak was spraying into the cover, it must have been hissing a fair bit! Now we start to get a bit of a clue what the machine is like internally, this water level should be white, the water inside looks like a bunch of pox.

  32. Here's a pic or the rear, already with a quick glance problems present themselves. From here you can see a lot of lime scale facing the bottom panel indicating a long term water leak, there is black powdered rubber on the pump motor which indicates the pump has been shaking a fair bit for some reason, and the blue end of the boiler indicates that there is a major issue at the other end. Moving around the boiler it becomes pretty obvious that there has been a long term leak around the heating element with the amount of lime scale build up. Moving back around the front, the tray shows some signs of rust and corrosion on some of the pipes, the group heads also have a degree of pitting. Hopefully they'll clean up ok and the boilers is in reasonable condition.

  38. Wow big difference in power now that the new carbs are on and it is has been dynoed, its like night and day. I was there for the dyno session and the Gloria was pulling just over 200hp at the wheels. It now has awesome throttle response and put you back in the seat power. Also just had an email on Friday that my new wheels are ready from the states, 17 x 7's for the front and 17 x 9.5's for the rear.

  40. Maybe one of the last updates before it all gets chucked into storage for year while im away in Canada.i painted the rocker covers with black VHT wrinkle paint and i got the effect i wanted on the top and partially on the sides, the rest just gave a flat finish,i followed the instructions doing 3 heavy coats in a cross pattern,so now im not to sure on how to fix this, maybe put the covers on there edge? nearly there getting the retro 70's look that im after, should look sick in the bay of the crown

  43. peter has finished fixing the dent in the drivers door and he gave that back to me this morning. he's taken the boot lid to repair and i should have that back next weekend, then its just the passengers door left to do. oh and the sunroof. anywho, with the front guards and a door ready for priming today was paint day. i went and bought some protec epoxy primer (epotec to be precise) and gave that a go today. it is a bit different to what I'm used to and i was trying to get it to look wet like i would have to do with durepox but that turned out to be to heavy so there are a few runs but at this stage it don't matter. I'm really only sealing them so i can start getting the shape perfect so there will be more primer to come yet. i might wet lay the colour onto the inside of the doors and the guards before i put them back on the car. this means i have to decide on a colour for it. i have decided to take the motor out and paint the engine bay because I'm a fussy cunt who seems to have endless time to fuck around rather that getting shit done. SO, this means i can paint it any colour i want. problem. I'm terrible at deciding colours and i agonise over it for months then choose the first colour i thought of. with this in mind i probably will paint it red but ill have a think about it over the next weeks or so. panted parts, inside and out. (colour of the primer is very green, looks way different to how these photos show it for some reason) Untitled by sheepers, on Flickr Untitled by sheepers, on Flickr Untitled by sheepers, on Flickr Untitled by sheepers, on Flickr

  44. We went on a mission this morning. Last weekend we popped into Pick a Part for a visit. Its what we call a day out for the family.... We happened to notice a a Subaru SVX so Ethan looked underneath and spotted a 3.7 LSD diff in the back. We are looking to replace the non LSD old triumph diff with a Fuji Industries diff found in a whole heap of jap cars like datsuns, nissans and subaru. We can then think about replacing the swing spring and swing axled with CV's and coil overs. So we gathered our tools and prepared to roll around in the mud and grease at pick a part for the morning. Unfortunately the wife had the ute, The warrant on the Fuego had lapsed, the MR2 was trapped behind the Caravan, the Jag is unregistered, so we only had one car to take......the Porsche. Crawling around under a car and trying to undo suspension bolts is never fun but it is even worse when its gravel full of standing water. We finally got it out and then headed to the office to pay for it and the lady said "that looks like a transfer case" We re-assured her that it wasn't...."its a diff". Then then says "it looks like a transfer case". We re-assure her again that it wasn't. She then says "it looks like a transfer case though"..... I was starting to wonder is a transfer case cheaper and just say ......Yep....its transfer case all right!. But eventually she conceded that it was a diff. Here it is back at home.
