CaMpylobacter
shit yeah, I don't get the 'go for as big as possible on everything' mentality, esp on a road car. frig a sack.

Rookie
Lol, going 3 inch will be free power, he is making a new exhaust anyway, so if a 3" fits then go for gold.
mjrstar
^how much "free power"
Rookie
Does it matter? free power is free power. You could work it out if you really cared, but the answer is that there will be an improvement.
Testament
If you are replacing and it fits you may as well, if it doesn't fit or keeping some of the old exhaust it's not a big deal
Steelies
you need to know how much free power in case it's too much and you suffer from sustained loss of traction 3
downtrail
Come to think of it there may not actually be enough room for a 3" without scraping on shit/trying to fit it around the rear diff being 4WD. Might have a chat to evil_si about it, I do like the setup he made for Ryan's Grande. There tight man but for your tx3 2.5" will be fine Thats all i ran on my 1.8 bpt hatch and that pulled 200fw kw.
kpr
If you are replacing and it fits you may as well, if it doesn't fit or keeping some of the old exhaust it's not a big deal This ^ if you do go 3" needs to be from turbo or its pointless. 2.5 will be fine. but the only bad points about 3" are packaging and bit more weight. its not going to lose power, but chances are it will gain a little.
Mitch.W
need to build a new exhaust for my daily will most likely see abit of track, comfort has gone out the window so not too bothered about noise, s14 with a sr20de basically standard but have some 264° cams ordered for it. from what i have read bigger is better? was thinking of doing 2.5" or 2.25 from headers back? my next question is muffler placement, i know it changes the tone where you put it but i only really have room right at the back? my current setup is just a 2.25" system maybe? with a yucky fart cannon that sounds terrible wanting to improve tone and quiten it down a bit, Thanks in advance
Sparkle
Hey guys. So not far off doing mine. As for resonator placement in the middle of the exhaust, is it going to be best to put the longest one I can in there? Or am I best to put two individual ones? Straight through vs three way chambery type mufflers - how much flow/noise difference is there, and what is more important for flow, a larger exhaust or a straight through muff? Current idea is 2.5" exhaust, into a super long resonator , then 3" inlet/outlet straight through muffler just after the diff, and an aluminised 2.5" pipe off the muffler to the bumper. Any suggestions here? Longer pipe after the muffler better for drone amirite?
Spencer
Yea pipe after the muffler helps with deep sound for sure. Go 3" or bust haha.
Sparkle
Will think about 3" if I can actually fit it. Is it better to go 3" with a chambered/sports muffler than 2.5" with a straight through muffler?
Roman
Mine is 2.5" all the way with straight through mufflers from Chase.Which work better than expected at keeping the volume down a bit. It's reasonably quiet when just trundling along but gets (too) noisy when you put your foot down.As per what the other guys have said a zillion times, 3" seems the go if you can make it fit.I looked at the difference in size of the bends etc and decided it was going to be an extra ball ache over 2.5" because they are a fair bit bigger radius if you use mandrel bend bits. I put a flange just before the rear muffler, so if it was too noisy I could easily swap it out. But so far it's been mostly fine, does sound a bit grotty though. If your car's gonna be slam spec then yeah I'd say you will likely struggle a bit with 3".
CorollaGT
Yea pipe after the muffler helps with deep sound for sure. Go 3" or bust haha. Was worried about this as I didn't bother putting a longer pipe after the rear muffler (is about 2" long) and am still left with a decent deep noise with no real drone.Hey Sparkle the zorst on my Corolla is 2.5" with two reso's and a straight through Magnaflow oval muffler (offset inlet/centre exit). You're welcome to have a nosey/go for a ride to get an idea of noise level. At this stage am real happy with the quality of those, will be pretty much the same as the AdrenalineR oval mufflers. kpr
oversize mufflers if go chambered, as not often they will flow as much as inlet/outlet size. straight through mufflers; same size a pipe is all good.
PedRac3r
Dont know if you any of you guys have seen products from these guys www.adrenalinr.com? NZ company making some top notch mufflers and resonators etc. I fabbed a 3" zorst for my Hilux, from the turbo back and side exit dumping before the rear wheel, it was fucking loud, sounded like a open headered tractor with mad turbo whistle. Anyway, put a 450mm 3" reso from AdrenalinR in it and holy shit, what a difference. It took away all the raspy tractor sounds and ended up with a nice a deep tone throughout, and I would say its now mildly louder than a factory exhaust now. Would definitely recommend you guys try them.

pusherman
I have a 4 into 1 headers into 2.5" for about 10-12 inch then a hotdog type then 2.5 for another 2 feet to a turbo muffler then 2.5 over diff and out the side. Its a 1600 xflow twin sideys. I rather enjoy the rasp that i hear some of the other escorts on the net and also wish to drive around not setting of car alarms or attracting attention.. Sugestions please
tim13
ok guys and girls , my Au currently has factory manifold no cat and a 21/2 system with a 3" tailpipe factory xr6 centre muffler and a box type resonater at the back , I have rattles from centre muffler and rear res just touches spring at full compression , noise is great at bottom and top ends but too bassey and blah through the mid . so my question is what combo to get noise better thinking of res - flowmaster copy - coby (hotdog) or two flowmaster copies - coby , or other suggestions ? trying to get higher pitch and slightly quieter if poss for $2-300 in parts (may try to add extractors too) , wow that was more writing than I thought ! cheers Tim
