  1. It's been an eventful summer for this thing so I guess to recap on things painted the sill swapped out gearbox with nunged 4th gear did a bunch of things to get it properly certified Did some drag racing got a cert plate broke a clutch cable went to leadfoot festival broke another clutch cable wailed on it around taupo racetrack wailed on it around national park broke an axle won some awards replaced an axle found a strange/mystery intermittent electrical fault that turns the ecu off and back on at random intervals things to do solve electrical fault tidy up engine bay install water injection tuning, if necessary ecu upgrade to something fully sequential to allow individual cylinder trimming probably another gearbag/131 box as 3rd on this one pops out on decel after the racetrack session..... pictures not sure if this is melted from 100+deg intake temps under overrun or backfires, cant have been helping either way. replaced it for now but need to look for a higher temp/more robust fast response IAT sensor really.

  2. And that's all for March. More to come in April, but this baby will take me until November or December to finish as I only have about half a day a week free, so it'll be a wee while between meaningful updates. I'd love to have the subfloor finished by May. Always May EDIT: Oh, I should probably share the view that'll be from the cabin's second deck. There will be two decks, one covered and hard up against the cabin (that'll have an outdoor kitchen), but there shall also be a second deck a few meters away with an outdoor dining table. This is what that dining table will look at. I quite like it (sorry about the horizon).

  4. I have to confess to making the fatal mistake of sharing a few reminiscent Wild Turkeys with Rigamortice in the man cave whilst surfing Trademe. Look what we bought……. It’s a standard 3.3 (far too flash and “modern” to be called 202) 12 port Blue motor out of an early VH Commodore. Rigamortice will love the solid state HD ignition and I won’t have to adjust the **** points every few months! Even better when I dropped its knickers and flipped it over I discovered this. With some girls you sometimes just get lucky ……. A virgin spec 3 ¼ inch counterbalance crank complete with the legendary Starfire con rods. (The legend was that when Holden chopped 2 cylinders of the Red 6 to make the Starfire 4 it was so out of balance they had to fit it with stronger Starfire rods to stop it throwing a leg out of bed when given the proverbial ‘jandal’). I’ll need to grind the mains down to accept the smaller 186 journals and some machining will be required to convert the rear seal from rope to neoprene. I’ll have to possibly relieve the block & sump for clearance and I’ll obviously need to fit the lower deck height 202 pistons but Rigamortice will love the extra stroke, cubes and counterweights. Compared to the steel 186 X2 crank (top) the difference is obvious. We also bought something else (all Rigamortice’ s fault) but I’m not letting on in case the lovely Mrs sr2 has discovered this thread..

  5. Nats was good, arrival was delayed by a workshop giving me the car back with no brakes on Thursday evening, not sure what they did but I bled it up myself on Friday morning then set off. Scavenger hunt was fun On the subject of belts I think I can finally put that to bed. I now have no whine and they all fit nicely. Whine was caused by a too narrow belt, a 15A1055 fixed that, a new turnbuckle style tensioner and a 13A900 fixed the slippy alt and an AX25 gave the right length for the power steering (needed something between 13A675 and 13A710). The cooling system performed like a champ in a long hot traffic jam on the way back from Nats, the fan chooches the heat away nicely and the 91 on 85 off thermoswitch seems to be ideal. Next up is to sort the rear so I can lower it again and change the speedo drive in the gearbox so the speedo is a touch more accurate (reads 90 at 100kph).

  7. A year down the track we decided to fix up a few things are we're using this car for our wedding. So: - Flares - Wheels installed - 10" Wards - Internal bonnet release from newer mini - Front grill to match internal bonnet release (Old one used to be able to access from outside the car) - Black wing mirrors to match the car's theme (Only had drivers side one before, was a bit of a hack job)

  8. Let's play "spot the AW11" on Google Street View... Image is from May 2015, so a month or two before the car was sold and shipped out to NZ. Yup, that's it on the right hand side of the shot. The car yard (Marumi Auto) has also revamped their website to highlight the fact they specialize in selling '80s and '90s sports cars, which is sort of cool! (And also some really oddball cars...) 9. There's a bit of doomsday in the motivation TBH. The cabin will be off the grid capable, with 12v solar, 240v generator, LPG cooking and hot water, and of course a potbelly for heating

  11. It may not be every boy's dream, but I've always fancied a cabin in the woods. As luck (plus planning, decades of hard work, and some determination) would have it I now own 'some wood's. First I selected a site, and then cut down all the gorse. No trees were cut down, but some were trimmed. There may be one smallish karo tree that needs to be cut down later, but I'm trying to avoid it. UJ are kind to nature you see. What you probably can't see is how steep it is. It's steepish at least

  13. air cleaner setup finished. i hunted for ages to find a filter of any sort that had a small enough outlet to suit the 2TG but i couldn't find anything that wasn't utter shit. i had this trust one that I've had for ages and it fit better than anything else id found but it was chrome and the foam filter medium had turned to powder. i found a pod filter that had a similar foam bit so i bought that and the foam fits nicely into the trust pod, unfortunately the foam is blue but you can't have everything. then i took the frame to work and gave it a light bead blast so the paint would stick and i painted it black. job done. and in exciting news i put new plugs in it along with fresh oil and a new filter. oh, and i got the heater core reco-ed and I've put the heater box back together with new foam in it and thats back in the car now. oh and also - the windscreen washer bottle was a bit second hand looking with some of the plastic all powdery and shit so i gave that a light bead blast too. i gave it a thick coat of primer then i sanded it back to try and get it looking a bit more presentable then i painted it black so thats done as well. I've bought a cylindrical radiator overflow bottle that ill mount down beside the side of the radiator and that will just about finish the engine bay i think. 2016-03-29_04-48-47 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-31_04-41-02 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-31_04-41-10 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-03-31_04-54-52 by sheepers, on Flickr

  17. Yeah easy enough to make, just need a Bosch donut style knock sensor, shielded cable and then wire it as an aux in to your laptop. Then listen with headphones. Just need to turn off software processing or whatever so you dont get any latency. Handy that you can record it as well though. I had it setup this way but ended up wiring knock sensor directly into ECU.

  18. Been a bit slack on the updates but the work has continued along when ive found the time. Decided it was time to start on the bodywork while I let the funds build back up as there is a few small bits still needing attention before I can go for a WOF check. The previous owner had stripped the front doors and boot back to bare steel as part of doing a full bare steel respray but due to the fact that the car has already had most of the rust dealt with last time it was painted I have decided to focus on getting it as smooth and straight as possible and doing a fresh coat of paint over the whole car. Sticking with white as I think it looks classy with the chrome bits and matches the interior nicely Il let the photos tell the story here

  20. Did the lower ball joint today, had a massive score in that Repco (my usual parts place was out of stock) is running out there home brand versions so I got it for $3.19. Yuss!!! Also pulled the sump off the gearbox, then the filter. It's definitely got some particles in there, it doesn't seem like enough to be causing issues but maybe. The fluid looked pretty red to me, but I've bought some fresh stuff so I'll use that. Pics of particles in filter: Opinions??? Also, this is the dream: Except WA is shit so in the interest of keeping it semi legal this is the more likely dream: Cheers Matt

  21. But then I visited Steelies in the Steelies house, and realised that my '< 10sqm' cabin was going to be just too small, so I had to dig some more holes, add some piles, carry more concrete... but in the excitement I seem to have started the creation of a twin level internal access basement. Ain't no one got time for a single level external access basement. They're for chumps. Split level with internal access is where it's at. The foreground (bottom right) in this picture is where the chainsaw is in the first picture. There's heaps and heaps more digging to go
    2 points
  22. Next came digging. Lots and lots of digging. The top 150mm of soil is nice organic type stz, but beneath that is compressed greywacke dust (or something like that) which is about as soft as Danger. It can't be dug with a spade, and a mattock was far too slow and akward, so I hauled a generator up there and used an electric rock breaker. Nek munute it was time to lump up pre-mix concrete and get some piles in.

  23. Hey Team, Been doing a couple of little things on the bug since I'm down from Auck. Got the motor and box in a while ago but couldn't get it going. I triple checked all the wiring and found nothing wrong so I sent the computer away to be checked. Have got it back with a few changes so hopefully it goes! Have chucked a few panels on. Will hopefully get it pretty much back together and driving this week. Rad

  27. I got a quote for my rx2 dash recently- $1k-ish, far smaller item than an rx4 one as for your sedan, looking at those old pics i swear thats my mates old one and it would of been maybe 18 years ago when we were bashing around in it, RX4s are the best

  28. Oh yeah, check this out. SR20 clutch fan fits perfectly onto the FJ water pump and lots of clearance behind the CA20 radiator. Im keen to use as many Nissan / Datsun parts that I have lying about in the shed. ha-ha

  29. Here's the 280ZX close ratio gearbox, its got the FJ bell housing on the front. Pretty cool how all this stuff is so interchangeable! I gave it a quick once over and had a look inside. Seems all ok, no chipped syncros etc and should be good to go.

  33. I've been in touch with YT, the alloy Holden 6 heads they make are all 12 ports (Blue or Black mtr) and the valves are different. Big issue is the 5 thou oversize stems, I may have to just bite the bullet and replace all the exhaust guides to bring them back to standard, it would give me a lot more options. I'm still kicking myself for not turning the motor over more frequently!

  35. So in short, yes, fit a trans cooler, it will help trans condition be better at least. Your problem might in fact be, that you are using a Rav4 for towing duties.

  36. Well its been 4 months and no progress - life gets in the way! Got a few hours this weekend and did this. Tacked the new inner sill in IMG_6576 Over the break did another order to Germany and got these new inner wheel arches, at about 15 euro each I couldn't pass them up IMG_6578 Decided if was better to just use it for a repair section - a lot less work then unpicking the whole thing. IMG_6580 Ready to stick in - tacked up the top join but the original steel is so very thin I need to get some .6mm wire for the MIG before I go much further. IMAG0698 But at least some progress. It will be another month before I get another chance now

  38. Well finally got my wheels made up just before Christmas... Tyres fitted and balanced - went and did some domes, seems OK slight rubbing round corners but she'll be right! Hooked up van... drove 2 blocks down the road and had to turn round as both tyres were rubbing flat out. Gay. 1 white walled Eager So the consensus is, leafs too soft to tow van - put over rider spring back in and get them reset so I can keep it low & get rid of blocks. New bushes to minimise sideways movement. Re-weld rear wheels with a bit more backspace.

  39. There hasn't been a great deal of progress here lately but I've put the rego on hold and I'm actually going to start the manual conversion. The clutch kit is ordered and the flywheel is getting machined. I discovered a small water leak behind the engine from one of the heater hoses so i will sort that out once the gearbox is out. Possibly some other cool shit will happen while its off the road but that's a story for another day... I'll leave you with these photos i took when it was at about 30-40mm high

  40. Well, not quite a major update, but this one does involve squid, as promised. It's languished in the corner of the shed under a thick layer of dust for far too long, but I've been keeping a surreptitious eye on Yahoo for various bits and pieces to buy and keep aside for when I finally restart the project. A few days ago a set of tidy door cards were listed, so I requested the services of Alex @ MLR to secure them for me. Boom! The fronts on squid are a bit worse for wear - the map pockets are missing and the trim has screw holes from where someone's carelessly mounted a pair of ugly box speakers. Next step is to try and secure some replacement boot carpet from a guy wrecking a HR30 sedan in Australia, and then the interior should be complete, save for the construction of my custom gauge panel and repairing the tear in the driver's seat. Lastly I also need to save up for another FJ20ET dizzy to rebuild and then convert into a crank angle sensor to drive the Link G4. They are readily available from YAJ, but are expensive even in unrestored form. Discussion: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/21738-orions-dr30-wedges/ And a photo or two to keep myself enamoured:

  41. finally got round to getting these in the car this weekend! wasnt without its hiccups though! had to redrill the towers to fit the camber plates. Wasn't too hard! Then the steering knuckle was hitting the back of the hub and the strut wouldn't bolt up flush (GX71 struts in a GX61) easily sorted with a bit of a grind of the steering knuckle! The other side was fine. THEN the lower bolt for the calliper fouled on the knuckle aswell! only by a fraction though so i just done it up nice and tight and everything pulled in nice and tight. That bolt won't be coming out! Also had to use different anchor plates to mount the brake callipers to the GX71 struts as the mounting holes were slightly further apart All sorted now! so i went out and took some pictures. chassis rails are at about 70mm with everything captive. And there is probably about 100 mm left i can come down on the adjustables

  44. The component cradle mentioned previously is now installed in squid, with cassette deck and EQ fitted (non-functional as of this moment - see below). It is awesome! Made a bit of progress on the vintage audio project over the weekend as well. Took a couple of headunits and amps down to Cam and Ned at ProTech, opened up the cases, hooked them up to a test rig and tinkered around for a while – the end result being that with a bit of judicious (and precise!) modding, it should be a cinch to “hook into” the cassette line-level output with a suitable media player device and still have the headunit control the tone, balance and volume levels. Next step: figure out how to switch input seamlessly between cassette and line-in without blowing anything up. (Don’t look at me like that; everyone knows cassettes are The Bomb!)

  45. Headed out west in the coupe for a quick photoshoot before the drizzle closed in. as I originally feared the tyres are too low-profile and detract from the general awesomeness of the Watanabes, seriously considering going back to 60s all round But it's going to be a downright c-unit to sell the 205/55R15 and 225/50R15 tyres, there just isn't any demand for them. Tell me I should give up completely and swap it for a 1996 Honda here: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=10380

  46. How to regain motivation for the coupe: Fit some lush wheels. Track down a functioning AAC valve and other miscellaneous replacement engine bay sensors, then give car to John for an afternoon to werk his magic. Voila, car feels like a completely new beast to drive and actually picks up from down low instead of bogging like a bastard. Wash it for the first time in aaaaaaaaages. (Then cringe when it starts pissing down with rain an hour later) Yes, I know it looks like it could do with a bit more slam but this is actually an optical illusion more than anything else. Perhaps 55 profile tyres weren't such a good choice after all. Tell me to put some drifteks and a RB30 in it here: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=10380 p.s. here are some sweet models

  47. sold the SSRs, finally. Which meant I needed some temporary get-around wheels for the coupe. Fortunately I had the foresight to buy some standard DR30 rims a couple of months ago for next to nothing off trademe (after a fortuitous tipoff from old man southern). As disgusting as they look, I actually like 'em if I wasn't in the process of getting my Watanabes prepped 'n' painted, I would consider just leaving the car as-is and buying new tyres, the ones on there now are rubbish! can you guess why they're nicknamed "telephones"? cheers to Irving for sorting out the wheel swap
    1 point
  48. Tunrs out you can't fit +15 offset 15" wheels on the front of a DR30 without fouling them on the calipers so $20 and a pair of 5mm spacers later... next step... fit the rears.

  49. Sedan all clean again. Thanks to the SLIPWAY guys for letting me use their back yard as a photo studio and the use of the garage to see if I could get the dizzy off without resorting to a hoist and removing half the intake manifold (sadly, the answer was no - so I'll be getting the car towed to my mate's workshop next week) btw, it broke down on the way home. I live 1km from the slipway house
