  1. So close! I started on the nose today, the plan is to make it like the inspiration car... Ill start shaping it soon. He's a wee champion, not even 3 yet and he's a pro on the tools. He wont let me out in the garage with out him.

  3. Hey guys, pics of my recent build - datto 120y. running gear was sold as mini stock parts and I bought the bare shell and then later tracked down all running gear, interior etc. Had some rust which I fixed and after 18 or so months, went for its re - vin and passed. 12 days later drove it on its first proper drive from Wairarapa to Palmy for the Four & Rotarys Jamboree meet at Manfield //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/48815-120whys-75-datsun-120y/

  5. got thinking that this isn't exactly the newest car on the market, and it seemed odd that i would be the only/first person to discover an issue with the catalog, and that more likely something was up with my car. when investigating, and found that someone had jammed a piece of metal down the strut tube in order to make the slightly shorter shocks work. fished this out with a piece of wire. and the new shocks fit properly now. quite glad this isn't as much of an issue as i thought, though rock auto where going to be really good about it if they were infact wrong. so i recommend them

  6. Ever had that feeling where you know you shouldn't have started messing with something? I thought I'd give the cooling system a birthday as it looks all rusty and shitty inside and its running at just over half way on the temp gauge. climbing to 3/4 when under heavy load. Hotter than I would like. Then i pulled the fan assembly off the radiator. Lots of lovely black water came out. So I sent the radiator off to Motueka Radiators to have a good clean up. I thought I better locate the thermostat and see if that is part of the issue....couldn't find it.....Surely its not in that weird canister with hoses coming off it. Oh wait yes it is because Soviet Russia! I cleaned all the shit out, tested it, and it seems to open at about 88-90 degrees. So I'll roll with that for now. Bit hotter than I'd like though. And all the hose clamps are single use only! Similar design to CV boot clamps. Almost like you were never meant to take it apart. mmmm gunky Radiator came back all clean and like new...or so I thought So I cleaned up the engine bay, smashed it all back together and filled it with coolant as quickly as possible to attend this months Nelson meet in Takaka. Total disaster!!!! Jane and I made it 3/4 up the Takaka hill and noticed the temp gauge creeping up again. Then I noticed a green substance leaking onto my left foot from the heater core. Uh oh... So we pulled over, popped the bonnet and there was green water everywhere. Dobbie at the Radiator shop must have had one to many doobies that day and forgot to re solder the inlet pipe onto the radiator properly! So that was our trip over. We coasted back down the hill, topped up the water at the bottom and went home. Out with the radiator again. Ugh. Lada life.

  8. I finished making the hot side intercooler piping today and also made the brackets to bolt the air box to the engine bay. All in all I'm pretty happy with it so far. And only need to use 4 silicon joiners in the whole set up from air box the intake fannymold.

  9. Brain: Hey get another project Me: Nah got 3 other cars to waste time and money on. Brain: go on, its a wagon. Me: naaaah... Brain: ahhhhh go oooonnn. Me: ok Here it is, a somewhat neglected GX60 wagon with a very sad, oil leaking 1G-EU power house The poor 1G is hemorrhaging oils from every oriface at an alarming rate. Thankfully the car came with a spare engine. So this lucky 1G will be receiving new oil seals, gaskets and water pump etc. + = Why the fuck am i even trying to make this lump look good?? Anyway that is it for now. I will leave you with this artists impression of the wagons near future. Discuss: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/48689-be4vers-gx60-wagon-discussion/

  10. Finalised my rear brakes the other day. I originally got some 2 pot AP callipers to suit a solid rotor as I had rotors already from an Audi 80 that were going to be ok but they turned out to be too small in diameter for the calliper so after exploring all sorts of options I was going to have to go to 2 piece rotors. Because i was going to the trouble of 2 piece rotors I decided to change the callipers to suit vented rotors. Have settled on these ap 2 pots to suit a 280x17 rotor. Needed to draw up some things for the sway bar and brake mounts and bells but the graphics card in my iMac with autocad on it has decided to pack it in so had to dig out the old drawing utensils. Old school.

  11. All i did was take the old thermostat cover and go shopping at super cheap for thermostat gaskets.. the closest i found which gave a better angle i think was from a pre 1990 4 cylinder telstar. Who knows what sort of motor they have in them.. it did need the mount holes hooned out slightly but works sweet as... Probably a pic in my 1G starlet thread.

  16. hello everyone, did a little bit more work. here. and here. Then I patched this thing up. and made it pretty. And then started opening up the front and A pillar. Still heaps to do, Drivers sides not as wasted as the other side, but still needs nearly the same amount of work to get rid of all the rust. cheers!

  19. This wee bit here was one of the more difficult things I've had to do during this. It's in the boot on top of the wheel tub sealing against the outer quarter panel. There's one on the other side too. But it firewalls the boot over the tub and will prevent me having to fill all the holes up the c pillar , in the back of this photo and also won't need to seal off the area between the door and wheel tub inside the car so should save a bit of weight.

  21. Hah, funny that. A friend showed up one evening with Quinn Lee Sang's old BFMP drag car hoping I could pull the tune off it with my laptop/SerialLink so they could do some tweaking. Turns out it was running a G1 V2 so I had to use a hand controller and create a reference map in Excel, bwaaaa bwaaaaarp. Everything about it is stuck in the 90s, from the narrow band O2 to the crude locked dizzy/reluctor setup and the lag monster turbo that only comes alive at 5000rpm... he texted the next day to say he'd found some hand written fuel and ignition maps on a couple of photocopied sheets in a folder he got with the car. Have told him he should really send it back to Link for their museum, they were actively buying back EMX and V1/V2 units for ages!

  22. A workmate just bought a turbo DC2 running one of the eeeaaarrrlllllyyy links. I'm pretty sure that the scratches on the casing are from when Moses tried to chisel the ten commandments into it. His engine has been running a bit rough so I was all "sweet lets just datalog it" Oh nah, turns out you need a serial board and all this other junk to plug it in, and there's possibility that it's not laptop tunable anyway. Heh. *back away slowly*

  25. Hey guys 2 weeks since I've updated this haha haven't been doing nothing . Been re assembling everything . Managed to sus out the loom so can turn over using key now . Picked up a nardi steering wheel off another os member . The muppet I got the bosskit of todsy which I was told "it'll def fit" doesn't . The horn bits don't line up will need another . Just put it on to check it out.. I'll be taking it to get polished to remove some light scratches in the chrome at some stage but ok foe now I no my dash is cracked n fucked .. I really wanna get it upholstered but some of the bottom of the dash has cracked so I won't be doing it until I get the missing bits I need and also a new lower dash section but that can wait. It's annoying me how it's cracked .. ohwell time will get me a better condition one . I'm after a w50 shifter if anyone has one lying around since mine is bent to fuck !! New toyo t1rs 225/40/r14 to replace the super stretched 185/50/r14s currently on the rears .. means I got 2 spares for the front now choooice Will get them taken off bead n re assemble when I can . Have borrowed a guard roller but need tyres on before I make a start on it. Even tho the clock is showing 420 n I'd love to keep it that way I will be removing that and replace with a 4" smiths rev tacho at some stage . Not a priority tho Used plastidip satin black for behind grill makes easy removal if ever needed . Also gave my headlight surrounds and bonnet hinges a lick of satin black to complete the look Panel beater coming to look tomorrow .. if anyone knows any panel beaters keen on some work PM me thanks. And finally I have a lot of spares . I will be keeping all panels and glass . I have pretty much full 2nd set of interior plastic . Rt100 dash . Couple cracks tho .. n shit loads of other rt100/104 stuff if you need anything pm me i may have it. Only parting with OS members as I no the troubles it can be sourcing it all. Made up a new radiator overflow out of 6 mm copper . I wouldn't mind making all my washer lines out of 6 mm copper aswell it would look pretty cool in my opinion . Need 2 grab some new 40 mm hose clamps for radiator hoses and a new battery for her n I can do some tests make sure my lights etc are working let car warm up to temp might even go for a drive up the road Thanks for looking

  26. Another small update. Good news = We had a healthy baby girl. Bad news = Garage time is pretty low for now... I'm on the home straight, the last of the planks have very little bending to be done, shouldn't take too much longer...

  35. Had another crack at it tonight .. I jewed out and hoped I'd get away without replacing spark plugs n leads . I checked plugs n seemed ok but everything else seems rather weathered I flattened 3 batteries trying to get it going before accepting my failure of not getting them while at super cheap when I grabbed some hose clamps to stop fuel leaks ... I did however grab another coil to dizzy lead while I was at spartan wreckers grabbing this... Clutch fork release bearing and bearing carrier . Bearing feels nice so will just give the fork a tidy up re paint n assemble after I get motor running .. my sump also has a small leak only happens when car turns over .. will need to grab a proper gasket since the gasket silicone didn't do the job I did however manage to get it to run without starter motor for up to 5 seconds a few times but was missing abit n sputtering away . I had these open which I've been told r for emissions n they should be blocked off will make it run lean so have since done that .. So tomorrow ill grab a proper gasket I need for sump . new plugs and leads and try again . Also fully swapped the last of the 18r loom over and still unable to start using key .. I think tomorrow I'll quickly switch starter motors to orginial 18r one n see if that makes a difference .. it use to work fine back in other car n since I've swapped it all other to this i can't see why not. How it currently sits... Shit it's lucky I had my co2 extinguisher ready to go .. the float valve on the front carbs must have been stuck n was pissing out fuel onto my arm below it .. Next thing ! Whooom ! My arms on fire the rubber glove starts melting around my hand and the fuel dripping out of the carbs catches fire to the fuel on the engine bay and all around the 5 litre gas tank I had sitting under the block I was using to start the car ... Phew ! lucky no damage to paint in engine bay or my arm for that matter ! Could have been bad tho . The float valve has since fixed itself must have been a little stuck n got floaded with petrol for the first time .since half of it was leaking out the dodgy fuel line connections

  39. Thats well over 20% lean of what I'd aim for, goes way beyond the value in the IAT trim so I'd consider it to point at least partly to something other than that - whether it's tune (easy to tell, is it ever on target?) or some other issue possibly?

Drivers side Ok so Ive welded everything up shell is now rust free as far as I no ... will finish pulling engine shit out 2m n start prepping that . Paint has alot of chips so will start sanding it all back might even have a crack at bogging some of the easy / more unseen bits lol .. 42. And then I realised the crank pulley needed to be tensioned to a setting that my torque wrench could not handle. So at the point all attention span was lost and we went for a bit of a drive to a remote area for some fun: KE36 with a 4k doing what it does best: But the photo of the day went hands down to my brother's e30: But now i'm a bit broke because of new flat and night-course fees, and combine that with the fact i'm paid monthly and there wont be a decent update till late next month. Which is pretty depressing.

  43. A wise man once said.. Put the car body at the height you want it to run at. Put the wheels and tyres you want to use underneath the body and then modify an build suspension to suit. It's really the only way to go to get it right the first time.

  44. Another up date ! Spent few hours this arvo on her .. finished fixing rust around front windscreen .. Here's pics . The rust mission is almost over !!! As per all the other repairs old owners had done this was no different .. old patch straight over the top of rust they welded it in but didn't bother to cut it out ... lazy assessment Couple little ones . Again old patches straight over rust.
