I have to agree with what Roman said in regards to it costing many more $$ and time than you expect, but I completely disagree with it not being worth while.

 

If you are half pie clued up and have a welder and an angle grinder you can do most of what is required yourself. You are young, buy a nice car to start with so that when you are done you end up with something that is actually respectable.

 

If I was swapping an escort it would be with a Honda K series, go forth young one.

this has to be the answer for the project direction for a 1st timer, and with some decent carbs and correct cam solution would still provide some grin factor.

Yeah man will become familiar with your car as pinto is not too difficult but requires you to think and will probably not cost the earth, even buying a rusty cortina and taking the engine and box out would be waaaaaay cheaper and faster, car wouldn't even be in the shed for long. Then you will see the trans tunnell size and the distances between bulkhead and radiator, and between the arches, how the cable clutch runs, how to mate up a different accelerator cable, how much you need to cut out of bulkhead for a stupid distributor and all that shit so you can judge better for yourself in the future what will and what wont work. 3sge would be dope but it wouldn't be my first choice, mx5 twincam with 6speed would be boss if you were gonna spend shitloads (that was what I dreamed of for my last escort)

I agree that you may be jumping the gun a bit with such an involved first engine swap, but I also think you should just do what you realy want to- just be realistic about it (price/time/cbf etc).

Have you considered dropping a 1600 kent into it and working on that? Can get decent power from them to have fun and not have to throw cash at certs, custom mounts etc. Otherwise as others have said a pinto. I've got a pinto in my escort (was suppose to be a 3 month swap n hoon but I have owned it for nearly two years and it is still not finished/legal) I chose the pinto because its slightly more powerful than the stock kent motors and has a lot of potential but most of all because I like the sound of the lumpy SOHC with sidedraughts.

All in all, decide what you want the car to do for you, get your mates involved to keep it progressing and most of all have fun doing it. I so often get frustrated that something isn't going right before I realise that I started the project to learn, to enjoy and to be proud of once it is (eventually) finished.

By far the easiest/cheapest way to make an Escort move. And the big advantage for a first timer is that it's been done 1000s of times all the hard prototyping work has been done and documented. There used to be an great site that told you all the options of what could and couldn't be used for a Pinto swap a step by step guide with  pics (I forget its name sorry, but someone here will know; I think it was an Aussie site  iirc).

 

That said, 1600 xflows can be made to go pretty well, easiest motor in the world to work on and plenty of knowledge out  there, but yeah and lot of $$ and effort compared with using a stock Jap DOHC instead. 

 

I'm tossing up between a 4G63 swap (there's a great site that tells you how to built them up for RWD) as they're comparatively cheap, very robust, and can make big power if turbo. I got as far as measuring it up and iirc it'd fit, but would be very tight. I'm probably going to go the Mazda way with either a Telstar DOHC and ute based gearbox or an MX5 setup. - But every time I think that I remember the super hot xflow I have in parts on my bench that would fun and keep it's classicness :lol:

The pinto to go for would be the 2.0 from a cortina.

 

Put it with a type 9 five speed box, extractors, weber 45's and a good camshaft.

 

You won't look back. I had a mk3 capri with that combo and it was a massive smile machine.

if you dont go cortina gear i say roll with 4age, run it on carbs, and mod a k series dizzy to fit, and youve got a completely mechanical and most importantly, SIMPLE swap, good power to weight ratio, good engines to learn on and IMO a 4age with some sidies on it look sexy, it will never be a race car, but will be quite quick for an old donk, nothing to really go wrong, no major hurdles in install process, and it wont blow up your stock diff in the first burnout, my ke 4age conversion cost me a bout 2g including exhaust and wiring but i went el cheapo with the radiator (need to buy a new one now D'oh!) interesting enough, the rubber mounts im using in my KE are factory escort ones on the rwd 4age mounts that get sold on TM so those mounts might be a good base to cut up/ line up in an esky too. i used to have a angle box with cortina running gear and cost me more then two grand to get it all in... just something to think about it :)

theres a 4 door up north I know of that has been sitting a few years likely get it for cheap.

Turbo'S' like more than one turbo? As in a Turbo Charger? Yeah I have a haynes book it came with the esky I got, my esky is stock besides upgraded brakes. I would just feel bad ruining it so I would get someone elses half done project

A mate has a 3sge beams in his Mk1 escort race car. After stuffing around with standard computer he threw a link at it and gained 20% ending up at 120rwkw. Only modification is a lightened flywheel, otherwise unopened and standard intake etc. It does 1.21's at Hampton and sounds Legend doing it. It will pick up the inside front wheel around a turn and goes past me like I am dragging an anchor... (Hey wait a minute, the Mightly Lazy Essex has been likened to an anchor)

 

I have spent many happy hour contemplating cats and methods of fur removal and listed up all sorts of engines to slip into my escort. 3sge Beams is right up there until I realised I should just fix mine and enjoy driving the pants off it for a while. (And continue plotting world domination, I mean engine swaps)
