  1. Owned this just over a year now - still going good! Tracked down some head light trims recently and have hopefully tracked down the two sill chrome pieces I'm missing (for not an insane price). From looking at Rx4s at various events I'd noticed that my grill had been painted a light silver, and most I've noticed seem to be a darker gun metal type colour, so I decided to paint it a darker silver and keep the lighter silver as an outline. I recon it looks sweet, in combo with the grill headlight trims changes the front end look a fair bit see pix for a comparison https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/53792-oldrx7s-1977-mazda-929-wagon-discussions/

  3. Long time, no update. I haven't done a thing to this, but I do use it when ever I can. Fixed some potholes and graded the drive today. Been getting ready to do some paving which means lots of base to build up. Why shovel when you can Bulldozer? Hid in the garden. I'll add a choke cable in the future but beyond that all is well.

  4. Testing the CSP linkagejust wanted to check everything fitted and worked together as I bought carbs, manifolds, linkage separately.managed to turn the engine around and get a good look at the flywheel/clutch for the first time in nearly ten years.a bit surface rusty, should be okay??bench looks like this.car still looks like this, sort of.

  6. Cheers for the link, they don't look too bad at all really, will keep them as an option for sure/buy them anyway cause I'm sure I'll find a use some time. The Stage6 I've got is a Pro/Replica, it was for a Minarelli but I had it cut and welded for my original Frankenstein AZ project. Nice pipe, high RPM powerband though and the real problem is I had it set up for a naked frame and now it fouls the Let's plastics a bit. I'm watching a full set up on Yahoo, with the little rack and the indicators and all, if it goes cheap enough I will get my bud to whack a sneaky bid on it. I'll likely end up with an LED lightbar tucked under the front deck too. Tipped the hydrochloric acid out of my pipe just before, flushed it out with the hose then managed to burn a bit more carbon out too Was just starting to cooch at that point, added a stream of compressed air and it really took off! Pipe is pretty much as clear as I can get it, obviously as soon as I can change to something better I will be! Result: Now time to keep tidying it up a bit and start on the bodywork, need to save a bit more $$ before I can really get stuck into it though as I need to get plastics shipped from Japan.

  7. So as the story goes, Older army guy bought her brand new back in 76 in Singapore were he was posted in nz army Cars been well looked after body's rusty but honest, running gears all stock needs sills floor sections boot floor also Easy stuff really, she's done 78000 km, packing a mighty 2tb and a t40 4 speed box twin carbs even!!! Paints seen far better days but packs so much character it's fully staying Plans at this stage are get the major rust sorted get her running mint, plugs, points, condenser, water pump and radiator flush out/rodding out Fuel pumps shot same with clutch hydraulics as I go I'll wire wheel things back and coat with p0r15 Plus the mandatory slam and wheels Got to keep the longchamps off the datsun so they'll go on Never ever thought I'd have one in my possession and if it weren't for @OldNathan it'd still be a dream many thanks bro!!

  8. The plan is to chop the ends off it and make a simple Baja Bug. It's something I've always wanted to do but have never found a solid but lashed up car before. I'm not a fan off cutting up good old cars but I'm also not a fan of rusty Beetles. This is what I'll be aiming for, pretty sure it's going to be a bug eye. Aye Before I do that, I'm going to drop it, put a big motor in it, put some paint on and run around like that for a while. I've given it a service, taken the door bars and front half of the cage out coz I'm 50 and falling out of a car at the local Supermarket with your foot stuck under the seat is not big or clever. It's a piece of junk, it rattles crashes over bumps, lets the rain in and is as slow as fuck and doesn't really stop but i'm hooked. Update when my mate finds me the 2" drop spindles and 7" rims for the rear. Hang loose Bro or something.

  11. Had a thing. It needed some stuff done do it. Saw manu, tried some stuff, realised we are idiots/I'm an idiot and did it the easy way. Oil line feeds the turbo and the vacuum pump for the alternator. Ordered new engine mounts ex Japan (wallet not happy but I know they will work). Last few things are to fit crank pulley, flywheel and clutch, and pull the stud out of the old block for the sump. then it's time to go back in! Aftet this photo I put the engine mount brackets on and it will be in the way of the factory turbo inlet pipe so will have to bodge something up for that

  14. Just have to run them in on the high rate springs. Its not really an issue if you follow a good break in procedure. Flat tappets seem to like to wipe themselves on pushrod motors a lot more than OHC. My guess is it has more to do with how they generally use lobe taper to ensure lifter rotation - incorrect lifter bore angle/clearance, lobe taper, lifter radius or cam end float can easily stick a lifter. DOHC use a flat lobe offset off the bucket centreline to rotate them, quite a bit less to go wrong.

  15. That could actually be rather useful, my stage6 is too long and would take way too much hacking to fit! First lot of parts from Japan arrived, kevlar belt, variator kit etc... Thinking of grabbing a pair of lights and making a bracket to set the front end up kinda like this Probably not with blue lights though.

  17. Round 3 took place on August 6th and the new spring rates were proving to be working! I qualified a second faster than any lap from Round 1 or Round 2 with a 1:24.3 which put me in 4th - not bad. The front two guys qualified at a blistering 1:23.3 and 1:23.5! Madness. Race 1 came around it was GREASY. I started 4th and jumped up to 2nd on the start but ended up slipping back to 5th after running wide and getting wheel spin on the exit of the last corner. Not to worry though, two people fell of ahead of me so I still came home in 3rd. Spin: Full race: I also managed to stuff up when trying to record the other two races... So this is the only race on camera. So the setup is getting better! I'm planning to run my AE86 at the next round, so probably won't be campaigning the MX5 at the final.

  23. I don't even want to think about the mess I'd make trying to do that! Either a steel blob of crap or an exploding mess of water and shrapnel! Pulled the carb, stripped it, checked it all over, only thing that stood out to me was I'd put the oring on the wrong size of the little washer on the mixture screw lol. Fuel pump/vacuum tap doesn't stop flowing even without vacuum, but the float valve in the carb works so that shouldn't be the issue. Had been using a Gyro emulsion tube, changed to the Dio one Gyro, Gryo, Dio. All three carbs had 35sj so I fitted the nicest looking one. 75mj, I've got 2x75 and an 88 so obviously I stuck with the nicest 75. Enrichment valve seat looks fine to me, seal might be a little flattened but not too bad. Put it all back together and... No change. Crap. Then Aaron asked when the degreaser I got on the cylinder yesterday while doing the stator would stop smoking? Had a look on the stator side of the scoot and realized it was exhaust leaking from the head pipe to muffler join, it also dawned on me that while there was a fair bit of smoke coming from this small leak there was next to nothing coming out the tail pipe, hmmm... Yeah the muffler's blocked almost solid again . Pipe is now full of hydrochloric acid and hot water, leaving it to soak over night, fingers crossed it's all of the issue! A super quick blip of the throttle with just the headpipe seems to suggest it is, too late to be running it with no exhaust though haha. Need to sort out a proper pipe ASAP!

  24. So upon going back to the old guys house i originally brought it off, turns out he had another one in front of the container in the first photo on this thread, Got shift and lift to carry it over the 40ft container next to his house where it sat for years and i was away! 1969, original black plates, reg on hold, huge external sun visor, great chrome. all the extras at the time, unfortunately the paint has seen better days and the motor and box is gone, might try rip into it one day but in the meantime I've got it at my yard waiting lol

  25. Took my 1995 130 Crown wagon up to Auckland handles way better with new shocks; but the factory non-VVTI 2.5 n/a 1j is slow as shit... The wagons too heavy for it. I'm keen on the idea of throwing a 2jzge in there; the 3.0 will make the wagon get along a lot nicer and turn it into a nice cruiser. And Don't want to go down the 2jzgte track, So there's a low km non VVTI 2j n/a on TM for sale for $2500 from a JZZ31 94 soarer... Or 1500 without ancillaries... Questions I have is: 1) will the 1j ancillaries bolt onto the 2j? 2)will the 1j ECU run the 2j? 3) do I need a cert for the swap? anything else I need to consider in what appears to be a straightforward case swapping the sumps and dropping it in???

  26. I've been back in this thing for the last 3 rounds of Winter racing at Manfeild. The competition has really heated up! The current top guys have been doing 1:23's and the new lap record is a 1:23.3 - that's over a second faster than my previous lap record! We're running on the new Toyo R888R tyres and they appear to be a lot faster. Most cars have had their engines refreshed too. I jumped in for round one and went ok, but the car didn't feel right. It was pushy in the mid corner. Turns out the left front shock was toast! Despite that I still managed to get down into the low 1:25's and was mid pack. We've had a decent turnout this year, with 13 cars at each round so far. Bit of footage:

  29. Deets on stage 6? In response to your question about my aliexpress light, quality seems pretty good. Has a stupid nut/small screw set up that holds lens into housing with a clamp that goes around the outside that's a bit fiddy but once tightened is fine as circled here apart from that seems sweet quality. Takes same type of bulb as the LETS2 head light (pinched it to go in the lets) and I think is got provisions for a park light bulb also mounting bracket is pretty solid. Can't complai for the price. Here's a link Look what I found on AliExpress http://s.aliexpress.com/uMVr6RjU

  34. scooter started smoking like a 350,000km mitsubishi. when i put the head on, it felt like the exhaust valve retainer was hitting the top of the valve stem seal at full lift, i thought "meh, ill see what happens" and now i know. took 13 minutes to have engine out again and stripped. put the old head back on and no more smoking. still waiting on new rollers, i pulled the variator apart cause i had some new guide bushes for it, and removed 3 weights just to see what happens and it makes it rev better. the variator has some wear in it so probably need a new one of those next. and ordered a 52mm piston and barrel because moar powarr

  36. Made it to chrome yesterday and went for a hoon. The is me heading up the hill at Hampton downs in 2nd changing into 3rd. Car is still running like a bag of balls and really needs a good tune. Need to buy new water pump, thermostat, think I'm going to rear mount the fan so it pulls instead of pushing and think I will be making a few trips to @Rhyscar place to get alloy bent up to make a better radiator induction and the same with a pile cooler will find one and direct the the air into that. Cheers to @flyingbrick for the video and the help yesterday. On other news I only got 3 laps in as 1st lap time out I didn't trust it fully and fuck everyone else was going fast. 2nd time out I had a bit more fun but I could smell it getting hot. Pulled in water exciting my radiator at a high volume. Tis great though.

Cleaned up and painted the two bows for the sunroof, I have one screw I can't get out of the front part of the mech, The large part that carries the catch, trying real hard to not have to drill it out, these parts aren't easy to find I would imagine? I've got it soaking in ATF and thinners.getting close!!

  38. its getting difficult to take pictures that show any progress but things are trucking along right nice. the roof is really complex with valleys joining at weird angles and the guys have been getting all that shit sorted. hats off to them because i would have taken years to figure it all out and get the valley boards in the right place. roof. so everything is on site for the roof and everything is just about ready for the roofing guys to put the tin on. i think they're going to start next week but they are a bit behind due to the rain fucking them around so they start when they start. the builders are right now doing the last bits of framing that join the new house to the shed so we probably wont have a shed roof tonight, just a tarp. yay. here is a picture of the front entrance way roof. its has 2 billion meters of timber in it for some reason. this is nearly finished then it gets ply over the top. in the background you can see hardiboard on the walls, we did that around the front of the house to reduce noise a bit. 2017-07-27_08-03-20 by sheepers, on Flickr

  39. I got the new window seals from the metric nut on Friday but didn't have time on the weekend to start fitting them, I did clean and prime the sunroof bows and fit the speedo cable. So some progress made. pictures.like the surface of the moon.orange primer is better than the other orange stuff.cleaned rear glass, tired to put seal on, couldn't, went to bed.I finally fixed the lights in the shed, the three lights that run down the middle have always been dodgee as, the bulbs never sat right and never seemed to last very long, didn't really bother as with the spit I could just turn the shell to the light if a needed to see a certain area, a week or so the last bulb popped with a bang and I've been using my phone/worklight heaps and losing everything in the gloom, so after work on Saturday I dropped into the supermarket to pick up some bulbs and bugger me if old school bulbs a hard to find now!?Anyway I replaced all three fittings without dying, and stuck two(pair were on special) LED bulbs in.Let There Be Light!! Jausis they bright, 1400 loomans each, bright white, fuck I wish I'd done this before I'd built the door up! so much better.

  41. Van update time! Been reasonably busy fiddling with it (and the van), tuned it up more, turns out the missus good tweezers are a good substitute for toyotas tamperproof mixture screw adjustment tool. hooked up the largely un-necessary manual choke, found the speedo cable randomly missing (lucky is just plain ke20 spec) so ordered an $11 replacement from thailand. managed to break the ancient aftermarket temp gauge and one of the front indicators due to incredibly fragile 70s plastic and general ineptitude, luckily I wanted an AC brand gauge and needed new parklight/indicator assemblies to go on the front spoiler anyways. Have ordered generic but kinda OS looking led ones. Got the hole in the passenger floor welded up, now i'm getting fussy and am going to grind out some old bog in the front valance and passenger outer sill behind the guard and weld that too. Missus and I gave it a quick blow over with some random purple for that coveted "one colour" stz, will suffice as a working paintjob until the body is straight enough for leyland black violet, as per coupe below. Also have found a u.s outfit that does a badass frazetta "the huntress" decal, which alone makes me keen to get it paintified. Been going a bit ott with the leyland stuff, I now even have a british leyland notepad (doesn't work in the rain obviously). Yes those are leyland-logo'ed valve caps, nothing worse than when your valve caps don't match your long-socks

  42. Go a bit more done over the weekend.zapped those door window winder things for 24 hours in the elecro-bath, came up pretty good!this process is just amazing! check it out!got the winder mechs painted and in.went and found all the seats and stuff, this is were it's been hiding for the last near ten years!got the VHT vinyl paint onto the door cards, one can used, will need more for the back seat, it says it works on fabric also, so I might do the fronts to match.I was kind of expecting the seats to be moldy or full of rat shit or cat piss, but they're as clean as when I bagged them up, which saved a job. Darrell helped me out AGAIN cleaned up the ol carpets and bung em in.big ugly rubber mats coz daily driver can still see my ass print! haha.not bad seats, if you squint they almost look like recaros. get in that hole you!door cards ready, spent a bit of time last night getting the window glass to work nicely, so soon.door scrapers, polished sunroof rails and door glass sills.sunroof mech, really in need of a full body off resto as well.all still working well though.cover has seen better days.top of the front bow.back and front together, getting them both drip stripped, hopefully there will be something left?? I imagine these are the most expensive parts on this pile! And!Front bumper and runningboards as well as seats and carpets! god damn it's almost a car!kids had to take it for a spin when they got home.

  43. and now for some real fun.being the incredible tightass I am, I'd only orders enough trim clips that I needed, thinking I'll just reuse the old ones. Well the old ones look like shit, very rusty shit. I also needed to clean the rust off the window scraper clips for the door glass and the metric nut only had a handfull of these in stock. So, electrolysis is my new favorite word! I was talking to the acid stripper guys about these small parts but he said the acids can take the carbon out of the spring steel and ruin them, then I remembered reading about electrolysis on OS,did some research and came up with this.dissolve some of this in water.fashion a crude metal tray to hold the small clips, optain metal bar for positive side.hook up 12volt battery charger and watch the fun begin.this was after 2 hours, didn't do a whole lot to the clips but sure cleaned up the metal tray!so I left it going all day in a quite corner at work, before/\/\and after/\/\. seemed to flash rust while drying, so I gave em a quick wire wheel and painted them last night.

  44. We have a runner! Set, tappets, shimmed up the exhaust, set the timing and away she went, runs nicely stationary anyway. Once new h/brake cable turns up can commence "round the block" testing. Thought for sure i'd have carburetor trouble since the twin aisans have been shelf-bound for so long but so far, so good. Can now hack into the body in earnest
