  1. Finally my engine turned up today from Joe at Throbnozzle Racing in the UK. It will produce around 115-120 BHP with the rejetted 28/36. I was going to run twin 40's but want it looking original under the bonnet with the original air cleaner etc. it has an Aldon electronic dizzie mapped to suit the engine and I'm using a Powerlite starter motor which is half the weight of the original and loads more cranking power. I'll get all the bits fitted to the engine over the next couple of weeks and I'm going to assemble the gearbox myself.

  2. More progress. Side (sill) members Made from 25x50 3mm box and just ever-so-slightly bent to echo the original chassis. These will ultimately have the body bolted to them: The seatbelt mounts are more Escort DNA. These were made some months ago. They will need to be modified to do the job, but the funky drilled panels will stay: Diff mount is now in. The underside of the front member is exactly the same angle as the mount plate. You'll notice the cut-throughs on either side of the crossmember for hoses etc again. The top mount will have a logitudinal member at the centre of it for more strength, but also to take the mounts for the brake hoses. 'K' member components are made and just clamped into place to check fit. These need the hose/wire cut outs at the top of them and the 'C' sections welded into place before the members can be fitted. There will be a 50x25x3mm box section welded in flat across the very front of the 'K', and ultimately it will have another prop-hoop as soon as I can mock-up the gearbox (which I haven't got yet....) K member should be in on Monday/Tuesday, then I can flip it over and finish-weld the underneath.

  3. So the 4K is all reassembled thanks to Hartley's! Not 100% sure on the specs yet, but I believe it is bored out to 1400cc, new pistons, bigger cam, ported, skimmed head, valve springs, lightened flywheel, electronic distributor. Weber carby has been rebuilt, have also acquired a Primera radiator, MSD coil, new muffler and Ramflo filter. Basically just waiting for the Rush automotive headers to be made then it can go in! So excited for some power!! Need to tidy up that yuck fuel pump and dizzy vacuum advance(?) somehow.

  6. I asked Gulf to sponsor me stickers for the Leadfoot Vintage racing festival. They said yes!!! So I got onto making a stripe and some numbers. Used string to make sure the stripe is straight. First time dealing with large decals. Was fun! Had to do the centre caps too Result It got a fair few comments. I love the look for now. Discussion: http://oldschool.co....00s-discussion/

  7. There was some wear there but fortunately I had a number of spare, similarly sized spring leafs so I cut some down to replace the worst worn. Some etch primer and they were ready for assembly. Out with the vice and G clamps again…….. A bit of heat in the right place…….. And another job is ticked off the list…..

  8. So after a few years of living somewhat of a snowbum lifestyle, I made a decision a few months ago to give I guess 'normal' life a try and made the decision to move back to NZ and look for a 'proper' job. I'd always kept my eye on trademe over the years and once I'd made the decision to move home I thought I'd keep my eye out for an old mazda to buy. And well, I've finally got myself another old car. Was on trademe a month or two ago, I emailed the seller asking about holding the car for me if I paid a deposit, he was happy to do that. And thanks to smokin'joe on here who managed to check out the car for me in before I placed any bids on the auction. ( i still owe you some beers joe!) After he gave me the thumbs up I decided to watch and bid. Paid a bit more than I wanted, but heck, it's something I wanted, and not that its a rare car by any means, and it's not the chrome bumper earlier model, but finding one in original condition isn't too easy anymore. So now I had paid a $1000 deposit on a car in Temuka and I was in Whistler, Canada. Id been planning a holiday home in October, and figured this would be a perfect time to go pick up the car and do a road trip back to Auckland with it! So I booked a flight from Auckland to Christchurch, then a bus ticket to Temuka and met the seller to exchange my money for the car keys! The drive back was quick but awesome, would of liked to take a bit longer, but time was precious, and needed to be back in Auckland asap. The car goes really well for how many kms it's done, and being the 5 speed model made the 100-110km/h driving a lot easier. It's not too bad on gas either and the motor has a lot of pep and torque for an old girl. Met Dave (Horse25) just out of Christchurch on my drive back up and picked up some escort bits n pieces and did a freight run up to Auckland for a nice guy with a mint mk1 escort he's modified for his son. I did notice on the auction photos of the interior that there was only an AM radio, and for a 14 hour plus drive, I knew that it would not do! So I took down my little speaker and used the cigarette lighter to alternate between charging the speaker and charging my phone haha. So here's a couple more pics; Luckily my friend had a spare spot in his garage, so it's gonna sit there for the next couple of months till I'm back in NZ again; Plans so far, either get the steel's widened (i quite like the '4 spoke' design of these) or find some other wheels I like that aren't going to cost a fortune, check out the suspension side of things, new shocks, lower springs, new steering bushes etc. And that will be it for a while, engine will do me fine for now, eventually maybe a rotary, but who knows, I'm just happy to have an old car again, and hoping to get along to a few oldschool meets and events in the future.

  9. Ben and I have been asked to find a suitable car to star in an upcoming ad. Not just any ad, it will be with the 30 seconds 'spray and walk away' guy! The requirements are: - Small (the smaller the better) - Road legal - Preferably Japanese. Honda City, Suzuki Carry, Suzuki Alto, Subaru Justy, Daihatsu HiJet etc etc. It doesn't have to be tidy, but we would like some tidy cars as options too if possible. You will be paid by the production company. Filming is usually on a weekday but cars are covered under Insurance for driving to and from set as well as while on set. Cheers

  10. Nick "the legend" sparky came over last night with the freshly rebuilt alternator and we chucked that in and finished the engine loom. the engine bay is looking pretty good now. i need to weld up some cracks in the rocker cover and paint it, and the intake, black but its getting there. so with its new found "goingness" i took it for a drive this morning. by far the longest I've ever driven it. maybe 4Ks. it seems to go alright. the front left brake caliper is sticking a bit so that might need attention but for a "first drive" all went well. its pissing oil out the cracks in the rocker cover which is to be expected but apart from that all seems to be well. there is a small issue with the alternator but I'm sure Nick the sparky will sort that out toot sweet. so next to do is everything else. finish polishing/repairing the window chrome and stick that on. millions of things still to do…….

  11. Been a productive saturday morning; Got an alternator on friday afternoon, swapped it over and boom, no more warning lights on the dash and the battery isn't f-kd which is awesome cos I thought it would of been. Took it down to the garage this morning & booyah! Fresh WOF, only a couple of minor things he noted to look at between now and the next wof, so pretty stoked it passed. I had also bought some wheels a few weeks ago, and they also showed up this week too! Had to laugh at the box they arrived in, sadly they aren't work wheels. But they're close! haha!!! They had been advertised as 16" 4x114 astrons, I was gonna run adapters, and I was stoked to find some in 16" as I thought 17" would look too big and 15's would look too small on the car. Once I opened up the box I realised they were in fact 15" , so I thought I'd check the stud pattern too to see if they were wrong about that also. And yep they sure were, and lucky for me they are 4x110, so no adapters needed. Tried them on to make sure they'd clear the brakes and indeed they do. So kind of mixed feelings, happy they fit, also a bit bummed they're not 16's. Oh well, will get some tyres and see how they look, should look decent once it's lowered. so next up is some suspension bits n pieces. Not in a big hurry but will look around and price up a few options. diss-cuss //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/50482-oldrx7s-1981-mazda-626-discussion/#entry1603115

  17. right have had some good progress latley, which was needed as its racing tomorrow. Got stuck in with the vinyl, and good old simon at quickstickers.co.nz made some lush custom decals. had the car on the dyno last night just quickly to make sure its safe. We have run 28mm chokes which is robbing a fair bit of top end but making it really driveable, i will run with these till i get the handling of the car then will go to 30s and hopefully a bigger cam is this one is mild as. it was wayyyy to super rich to start and now a bit rich but at a safe level. Token issues with trumpet clearances, cannot fit the socks at all, when they are on it runs super rich on the middle two cylinders so trying to solve that issue. Yeti at keith stewart dyno ( a couple of quick runs with the carbs still terribly unbalanced and it made 65hp at the wheels, which im happy with for now. He had a newly rebuilt ministock (so standard) 3k in the same day and that made 33hp at the wheels. With the 4.4:1 diff in it now it is peppy as fuck and should go pretty good this weekend hopefully. Only the driver will let it down. Pics cos of coolness dyno- and some glamour shots by sparkle, excuse the primer overspray on the tyres haha

  22. I still remember (although some 50 odd years ago as a child) my father taking me to the famous “Snell Springs” in Newmarket to have a set of springs made up for one of his many projects. As you turned into a now long gone side street off Khyber Pass rd. you saw a decrepit brick building with heat waves pouring from derelict chimney and the sound of big metal hitting big metal with a regular almost hypnotic beat. With my dear old Dad well known in the Industry (maintenance engineer at Chelsea Sugar Works and night time “management and supervision” lecturer at the then new & burgeoning “ATI”) an awe-struck kid got the full tour- in hindsight they laid it on for me thick! The sight, smell and sound of a work-blackened man with huge arms wearing a leather apron dragging strips of dull red hot steel from a forced induction coke powered forge and forming them into leaf and coil springs with a massive flywheel press, rollers, hammer and anvil stays with me still. It was a chance to have a glimpse through the gates of Hell where steel was formed, worked and hardened with heat, sweat, muscle and experience. Problem was I was stuck with a dilapidated pair of these……. …..and Snell’s were long gone. With a little care, an old strong vice and some big G clamps I managed the disassembly with fingers still intact. Next step was a week of the ‘electrolysis pickle bath” running 24/7!

  24. I don't think there's any stipulation about originality so I reckon you should give it a shot (Often the art department will fall in love with a car and accept it, regardless of modifications) We are sending the production team photos of vehicles that are available. They will express interest in a car or cars and then we'll contact the owners. Feel free to post a picture and I can send it off to them as a suggestion. Would be ideal! If Cam is okay with it, I'll send a pic or two.

  29. Fuck the others, TBH. Get elf. I ran elf in the NSR when in Dorkers, never had any problems, really good consumption and heat levels, was awesome. Couldn't get it when I moved back home so used Castrol's best and it was twice the consumption if not more it also seized (can't entirely pin that on Castrol as that was partly my fault but I like to imagine that were it running elf still, it wouldn't have happened). Would not trade again.

  30. so did she pass, you bet she passed after the wof dude gave her box a true smashing like I mean I was cringing she was legal once again after four years of hard work, Have a few photos I will share, it even made the journey of 1200km to nelson and tiki touring without any to major hickups, not bad for a engine that was sitting for four years, So yes I defied all the odds people where saying "you cant build a car in under a month" well guess what your wrong because I did plus some Here are some pictures from along the way from getting stuck in a reserve to scenic views

  31. Now I didn't get many photos on finishing as I had two weeks before I had to be on a boat with this car, due to holiday period everyone was in a go slow and panic was setting in, however with a week to go she was ready for a wof these are a few photos before the wof, 2months work is now depending on how well I built this car.

  33. Next was a exhaust I was very strapped for cash at this point and managed to pick up a 1 3/4 exhaust of a angle box how ever it was to short so we added a bit of Bedford pipe in the middle so now is more like 1 3/4 out of extractor 2 in in the middle then back to 1 3/4 the system runs through a coby before the diff then straight out, thinking I need a muffler as it backfires underload, I also re installed windows door handles etc with 35 percent tint all around including back window screen, don't have any pics of this but more pics of car progressing in other pics like exhaust ones

While I was at it I installed new window rubbers RS type which where solid rubber I was lucky enough to have a awesome granddad who was a glazier and helped me install the windows here a few photos of the lead up to install then installing the window rubbers, this job is honesty cringe worthy at points Also forgot to show you my tyre choice I scored a set of 13x7 hotwires and there laced with 205 13 60s

  35. Stephen the GC has also kindly enough given me (yes, free) a set of Aussie spec r100 taillights. They are in need of restoration though and i'm in no rush to get these so wont be doing anything to the for a while yet but going to eventually bead blast then and may even get the rings straightened out and rechromed (will probably just paint/powder coat them black as chroming is so fucking expensive). Will also try hunt down some Jap spec lenses. Oh yeah, here's a pic of the front end mocked up again (with the old grille though). With the new flares fitted they fowl with the front lip, looks like we will be trimming the front of the flares slightly, may even notch them to make fit up all gravy (shit picture sorry). Talk shit get hit here //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/44085-tai-scamps-mazda-1300/page-2. Tell me what I'm doing wrong. Chur, Tai

  38. Chassis is coming together nicely: A bit to go, but the main framework should be finished next week. I got the Jag IRS this week And stripped out anything I didn't want, which left the good bits: I just need to narrow it around 450mm. The engine I'll be using is a Falcon XR8 5.4 litre DOHC like this one: Deal done this week! Very happy, I'll be converting it to carb/distributor which should do away with all of the wiring and the need for an ECU.

  39. As with any project that involves old cars you spend a disproportionate amount of your time dealing with rust! I’d try been meaning to give electrolysis a go for quite a while and thought now would be as good a time as any. All you need is some sort of tank, an old school battery charger, some washing soda and water…… Connect the -ve to the rusty car part and the +ve to a few bits of scrap steel and throw the lot into water with a little washing soda added, turn on the power and watch the fascinating yet friendly little bubbles forming ……… And more friendly bubbles…………… After a period of time you’ll discover that despite your initial burst of enthusiasm watching friendly bubbles forming becomes very, very, very boring and you’ll feel a strong urge to drink heavily! The following morning you end up with a fuzzy head and rust soup………. An interesting by-product of the exercise is that you will also end up with the rust gone from your car part. Before and after shot….. A bit of paint and the results speak for themselves… Can’t help but wonder if you could de-rust a whole car body in the neighbour’s swimming pool with an arc welder, (while he was away on holiday of course!).

  42. I haven't checked in for awhile. This is a while ago now, but the shocks were pretty tired when I bought it. So I made some friends in Italy and managed to get some Bilstein shocks in. More recently I managed to stumble across some new shoes. With the Fiat being 4x98, there isn't much out there. So I had to make it work. Bit wide really, but oh well. It's fun. Put some tyres on. Rolled some guards And it pokes a lot. I know I should probably lower it. But I don't want to for now. Having one slammed car is enough. Nice having a raised daily driver. Future plans include going two tone like the original Mk1 Pandas. That's all for now.
