no fiddlers been in there, just been hanging out waiting for the engine. Operated sweet before.

it’s rotates about a foot or so

If your getting some movement it wont be in two gears. Then it would be locked solid .

Drum brake rear end?

Could the handbrake be binding?

Definitely not brake related, that’s what I suspected first off. But spins fine when jacked up.

Well I guess you answered your own question

The only thing between the driveshaft and the flywheel is the gearbox.

And if it all spins fine when jacked up then the diff will be ok or youd feel it.

Well, I guess that just leaves the gearbag then?

Great minds have spoken!

Nothing at all, absolutely normal operation

If it's OK running the engine in neutral then yeah it does sound like your lost 10mm socket and it's found its way into the crown wheel.. Maybe if it's not a 10mm socket then that rag from @cletus oil pump drive is in there.

Perhaps jack the car up noze down and start it up with the driveshaft removed from the gearbox? Shouldn't be too much spillage from the output shaft for a quick check.

What do you mean it spins fine?

Can you fully rotate the driveshaft by hand with the gearbox in neutral?

Yes you can.

clearly gearbox internals.

been trying to find any helpful diagrams etc for hours now

clutch operates as it should (can’t be pilot bearing issue)

diff is fine

brakes don’t drag

engine still runs with clutch in and in gear.

I've had a box before where the input shaft had a bit of a whack in and it jammed the 4th synchro onto 4th gear. So it acted a bit like it was in two gears, maybe it had some slack like yours does I can't remember.

If it drives in 4th that'll tell you

In more linisher chat, I don't do much in the way of heavy steel fab work bit do need a way of tickling up a tungsten from time to time.. I find my baby bench grinder isn't ideal and thought that maybe a cheapo belt sander linisher makes sense..

Anyone using one of these poverty machines? Appears to have a few more watts than the one @Geophy linked back a page or two..

If its only for tungstens a green wheel is the one, also helps with contamination as only gets used for 1 job.

But you can fully rotate the diff input flange right?

Yup, diff is free as, can roll the car around easy, spin the pinion flange by hand and cycle it through a one wheel peel by holding each wheel.

no clunks or dragging.

has to be something in the flywheel/clutch situation. But I don’t understand what it could be.

the old box shifts through all gears nicely still .

dumb
