Horse25
looking really good, how far have you extended your time frame by to get it running? also what master did you end up going with?
peteretep
haha time frame?! what time frame, its 4.5 years off the road at this point. truely though, im really hoping mid winter should be driving, main thing is need to get windows in now, bolting everything else up is pretty easy once you've done it 10 times I ended up going for part number 90577520, I still have to make up the actuating rod though which should be interesting as im not sure whether or not the rod falling out of the hole is going to be an issue or not, would be pretty damn scary if your brakes fell to the floor and didnt work at high speed or actually any speed really, so im probably going to have to find some arrangement where the rod cant fall out of the piston cup
Testament
did you sort out some new/different extractors for it yet?
eke_zetec_RWD
re piston cup. get a groove machined on the inside to accept a circlip or something simular to retain the ball on the end of the push rod.
peteretep
Ended up getting some pacemaker headers and they fit like a dream, the other headers are just fucked up yeah circlip sounds like a good idea

peteretep
cheers guys I didnt actually rebuild the motor, just picked it up already done. Personally I wouldnt do one up unless it was really necessary as there are some differences which make it a pain in the ass. Things such as needing custom engine mounts, and the dipstick is specific to 681's, I have a later model dipstick fitted but im not sure where the levels are as the dipstick goes all the way to the bottom of the sump. Also, for some reason I cant remove the gearbox with the engine in the car, it must sit slightly further back or something, but its a damn pain having to remove the whole engine just to get the gearbox out. As you propbably know as well, the 711 and later blocks do have some stronger components in them too which is always an advantage, especially as they dont cost any more and are more common. If you are still keen to rebuild the engine though they came out in early mk2 cortina's. The first two letters of the block number refer to when they were first released, so 681 came out in 1968 and 711 came out in 1971, it goes all the way up to 781 & 791 blocks which were the latest. But for parts, look for mk2 cortina or otherwise all the bearings should be the same as a 711.
rot808
i give this 9/10 lose one point for beating me to wof potential
peteretep
wof battle engaged, cletus just told me i has a cert plate waiting for me another issue with the 681 block is that the water pump is different from a 711 which is the only block which still has a water pump made for it, that means that when you fit a new water pump, you also need spacers to bring back the pulley into alignment. not too much hassle but a hassle none the less
