  2. Well, bit of an update. Ive done a few things to the coon, pretty much destroyed the exhaust on the way back from Cams party in Feilding the other week. Welded up the holes in the mufflers. Looks horrible but no leaks. Will be all good for now. Will be trying some air adjustable shocks in the rear to try rectify the issues with it getting so low with passengers. Its only really become an issue after installing a sub and amp in the boot. So...my mission for today was to rebuild the door hinges. Ive already replaced the drivers door handle after that decided to disintegrate. These doors are hell heavy and the hinge design is pretty poo. You end up having to lift the door with the handle to get it off the jam. hence the reputation of door handle breaking on these things. So, i had these turn up from Ozz, took for freaking ever. But YAY, finally. Old hinge disassembled At first i thaught that the old hinges were pretty good, looked ok and only had a small about of play, but then after getting the old bushes out. They where knackered. Hinges with new pins and bushes Removed the gaurds to get at the hinges better, also wanted to check for any rust as its a common area for these. no rust. Thats a bonus. While i had the doors off i noticed the drivers door had started to crack around where it bolts to the door, Was no point in leaving it so got to work at fixing. Cleaned up and welded the crack, then also added a plate over top as well. Should be alot better. Twice as thick now. Seen a few guys in Australia repairing these like this, but they do an ugly job, but it seems to work. Final product. Has turned out ok.

  4. So i found a Rack - looks like it should all work properly and doesn't fowl on anything yet. I also managed to find a rear subframe and arms to have a play around with in the rear, not much time to work on this of late due to chicken coop building.

  5. Well a month later and it's going again. Got the drive shaft back yesterday from ADL, $370 for new diff yoke, two UJ's and balance. Fitted this morning, pumped some crude oil in the box, picked up boot lid I had painted and fitted it. All good. No leaks so far. Blasted up and down the motorway. Its good to have it running again. Still have to fit the pretty bits.

  6. Wow I haven't updated this in ages. Ok, I've had a few different attempts at getting it running better since then. I borrowed some digital vacuum gauges and balanced the carbs, now that got it running a bit nicer at low throttle percentages but still wasn't quite right when it was opened up. I thought it was seeming a little like it had a blocked jet, so I stripped the carbs right back down again and cleaned everything out. In doing this i realised that I hadn't quite shouldered all of the slow jets when I pressed the new ones in originally. So I shouldered these properly and re-assembled it. The next ride it ran heaps smoother at low speeds but once you tried to rev it out or go faster than 90km/h it would start cutting out, it seemed like it was running out of gas, so I pulled the carbs again and re-checked the float levels (that had been a problem before). But the problem was still there. After some fault finding and head scratching, I found a big resistance (on occasion) from the battery to the coil. After the electrical fuckup in the last post, I have been using a bridging loop plug I made as a key to bypass the ignition switch, turns out moisture had got into that now too and was causing problems. So now i've replaced the whole lot with a proper switch and relay and tried to weather proof the lot. NOW IT RUNS MINT! Better than ever, revs out nicely, sounds fucking great! I'm still going to balance the carbs again after the slow jet balls up and will tinker with fuel ratio's after that, but its been a massive step. Its now a rideable bike I also put some stiffeners under the back of the seat as it was flapping about a little bit and starting to break off. All good now.

  7. Taupo woke up that morning and someone had left the freezer door open all night. It was bloody cold the poor car was not happy about it running a borrowed dizzy as my good one was broken. So I was on point's , but running never the less. Anyway 15 mins of trying to wake all the guests at the motel . I had managed to get it running ( bloody garage queen) Out to the track car went though scrutineering no problems. Went on practice as I had never been on Taupo before. In and straight back out for qualifying seemed to be going pretty well I was holding on very tight tyre pressure was very wrong due to the cold but I managed to keep it on the track .Second last lap then this happened. And number 2,3 where cracked as well So that was the end of the day until the guys sent me to Rookie Dave's place for a huge amount of old school help. 3 and a half hours later it was fixed. Back out to the track we went expecting the day to be over it was pretty much done. I managed to get one run in and beat my qualifying time by 3 seconds and the tyres where still far to hard. A great weekend car done well even if it had a rest in the middle of it . There are some new things on a list that I thought was almost done but no funds for a while now so I just have to wait. A dyno has be done very soon thoughts on where to take it ?????

  9. I would make the rear fog lamps switchable independent from the fronts. The rear fog lamps are very bright (brighter than the stop lamps) and are nothing but a nuisance in non-foggy conditions. There's nothing worse than following a Euro car owner who either doesn't realise the rear fogs are on, or have them switched on purposely. Just don't be one of those guys.

Temp sitting over 100 n not going down so needa look into shitty old sender unit, timing, and thermo. But all in all good result, im stoked that engine runs as it was a bit of a gamble purchase. Gaz

  12. Trying to keep motivation high for this. The great thing about these bikes is that they share a lot with other models like the R5's, RD250/350's, RZ250/350's and also the Banshee quads. Another good thing is that ever since they came out people have been tuning them for HP/top speed and flogging them mercilessly on the street, tracks and drag strips, as a result there is tons of info available. For example I now have a range of parts from different machines to stick in mine. -Clutch friction plates from an FZR1000 -Small end bearings from a Kawasaki H1 -Exhaust gaskets from a Suzuki GS1000 -Reeds from a YZ125 -Intakes and carbs from an RZ -TZR front caliper -FZR front disc -RZ350 rear master cylinder and caliper etc etc I also bit the bullet and have some spoked RD250 rims coming, the rear from the UK and the front from Japan haha Also have some new forks now, strangely just like my last bike the ones it came with were mismatched Cylinders are still away getting bored, just waiting on the last of the seals to arrive before splitting the cases. More cool pics

  13. Yay a new bike! I picked this up yesterday, a Yamaha RD400 I had one years ago but it grenaded itself and spent the rest of it's life as an ornament in my bedroom while I was at uni This one is 95% complete, main things missing are cables and a rear master cylinder. Came with some yummy expansion chambers and clip ons Fun times

  14. Discussion thread here! I did a deal on the Corolla and got something much more my style, basically a car I have always dreamed of owning. The opportunity arose to accomplish this dream and I did it. This is it, a 91 VG45 Toyota Century (L Shape). Its the long wheelbase version, powered by a 5V "Toyota Hemi" 4Litre V8. Now I know its 1991 so probably not classified as Oldschool but this thing has kept almost the same shape since the late 60s so I may be forgiven. The car has done 110,000ks, is in very good condition. Hard to find a single fault with the interior, everything works except for 1 window which I have a replacement reg coming from Japan already. List of features is pretty ridiculous, too lazy to list now. Has 2 dings down one side that I will get fixed, apart from that everything is mint. Pricing up airbags at the moment, bag it on factory rims for a starter and then look into the horrors of adding wheels. Also going to get tints redone. Have some plans on replacing some of the older tech with modern tech and integrating it nicely. Like replacing the Tape player in the arm rest with a tablet. Wifi in the car, redoing the speakers and stereo etc. Need to do a photo shoot, here is a taster:

  16. Thought i better start a project thread for my latest toy... Its a 1980 Series 1 RX7 SA22C Brought it off one of my mates who has owned for 6+ years, he had lost interest in the car scene Has barely seen the road in the 6 years that he has owned it..so i plan to changed that Brought the car on Saturday with a non working clutch, luckily we live right next door to each other so just pushed it over.. Washed of the thick layer of dust and gave it a vacuum to see what i was working, over all its in pretty good condition, few little pieces missing but the important parts are there... Found a little bit of rust in the doors and some surface rust in other places but nothing to major... Ended up fixing the clutch on the Sunday, charged the battery and went for a spin last night..reminds me of a hopped up 2 stroke dirt bike (Cars running a 12a J-port) Need to do a few things for a WOF Bleed Brakes Fix some rust Buy some bulbs Hope for the best Discussion //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/44345-d1rty6s-1980-rx7-rice-rocket/

  21. Finally had a chance to look at this yesterday. Had a bit of a play with a test light and the glow plug timer was working as it should. Ran a spanner over all the fittings and they were all good and tight. Tried to start - it was being a dick so gave the primer bulb a dozen squeezes and all of a sudden I saw a drip of diesel coming out of the filter housing. Took a closer look and a tiny little plastic plug in the bottom of the filter housing was letting fuel drip out. Which was obviously letting air in overnight. Was easy to bypass the filter with the factory hoses and fittings. Primed her up and it took 2 squeezes of the bulb and the bulb went very firm - which is good I guess. She fired straight up after a quick glow. Ran great and even felt more powerful than before. Left it to sit overnight again and jumped in before and one glow and crank, she fired on the second revolution. PERFECT. Ran like a dream and it actually feels much more powerful than before. I assume that is either because it had been gradually losing power the last couple of months with the stupid fuel leak and fixing it has bought it back up or the filter housing was a restriction and not letting all the fuels in. No matter - it's running like a champ and I'm stoked. Just need to add in a filter. Isn't a huge amount of room to fit the big Hilux spec one without some decent fabrication so may run a inline petrol filter and change it regularly until I can spend some time mounting the big one.

  22. Whoa! hold on there, Yes L300 and Holden front ends are used in old 50's and earlier hotrods but they are just as shit as the crown front end. Any junk yard wishbone front will leave you exactly where you are now with the crown front end. Theres 3 options IMO: custom arms and chopping the chassis, aftermarket front like a mustang 2 (not the full chassis clip), or just chuck springs in it and be happy.

  26. A good local site is www.plenternz.com, some stuff is cheap some isn't ebay of course has lots of new old stock available The funny thing is the '76 RD400 (which is the model I have) was the first production motorcycle to have cast wheels so they should be cool but they aren't, also maybe due to Yamaha being overly cautious using cast wheels for the first time they are actually quite a lot heavier than the wire wheels, the later models finally got lighter ones but they still ugly. Here's my spendy rear wheel, could have gotten a cheaper drum brake one but this lets me keep the disc brake which was also fancy for the time, these wheels only appeared in the European market as an option which wasn't very popular from what I can tell.

  27. So after taking it for a big spin last night i found it definitely has some big flat spots in the tyres from sitting so long.... Serious question, Will a nice little skid even them out or am i better to buy new ones? Bear in mind it had been siting for around 3 years on these tyres and they were dead flat when i went to look at it....

  28. My Birthday present from myself to myself showed up today.. IMG_1237 by postlematt, on Flickr Got a bunch of stuff off ebay, did a bulk buy and the seller was good enough to combine shipping rather than charging me crazy shipping costs. he sent them as a "gift" and although the combined cost including shipping was probably slightly ove the threshold he put the value on the box at $97 and also put a birthday card in the box incase customs got nosy.. but like i said its a birthday present from myself to myself.. IMG_1238 by postlematt, on Flickr The card cracked me up, the guy seems like a genuine GC haha IMG_1239 by postlematt, on Flickr its mainly small mechanical parts, bushes and a few other bits and pieces IMG_1246 by postlematt, on Flickr ill do another big buy an a month or two and get all my rubber seals, weather strips, badges and other stuff that will go on after panel and paint.. he sells a lot of old toyota reproduction parts so if anyone wants to check out his ebay store and make purchase when i do to save on shipping then give me a PM and can sus something out. Cheers

  31. right today the cab came off, all with out a hitch, (actually i missed chassis to cab earth bonds on the underside of the train, but they were disconnected with in seconds) they hired a team of guys to lift off the cab, talk about a waste of fucken money, 6 guys to run 2 straps and hook up 4 block and tackles, meh, its not my money, but ffs, it literally to 2 mins to get it off the chassis, although with the number of managers around you'd think it was the first time start up to a nuclear reactor, (actually last time i was at a nuclear reactor there were bugger all people about) any way photos and when all the monkeys had gone, we moved it over the power carrage, so it could be moved out the way as the space was needed at the end of the shed so another carrage could come in to be serviced so now the real fun begins, i have to pull out all the old equipment, frames, dash, controllers, etc and shift it along with the wiring ive already disconnected from the main junction accross to the new cab, and fit it all up, ready to go back on to the power car, bets are 3 months, but ive only got 7 weeks untill i go on a 6 week bike trip with my bro, uncle and a mate who are flying over at the end of august, ... i foresee some long days for the lone kiwi spark,

  34. Ok so... you could call it progress... after a considerable procedure, some beams, blocks and a skateboard the wee Galant is home. So, small words, with some pics. Cruised in to Zebra Saturday afternoon to collect the car, it was looking lonely and forlorn in a corner, imprisoned by huge concrete blocks and stacked taxivans As per the deal with the lovely gent who runs the joint I dropped the motor and box and he hoisted it daintily through the sky with his trusty forklift/hoist And onto the trailer my mate James (who better bloody hurry up and sign up on OS and who a few of you met at burgermeat) had organised. And away she went: Next was a decidedly complicated procedure of getting the thing down off the trailer at Casa Del PStar... this was rather complicated and backbreaking work for just 3 dudes... that thing is heavier than it looks. In the end an old skateboard salvaged from the inorganics saved the day... Chucked it under the front cross member allowing us to lift the back and slide everything down the trailer and onto some blocks... after an hour or so of cursing and planning and re-planning, straining, cursing and straining she is finally sitting on the front lawn ready for work to begin. And just because pics are great, here's a shitty photo of a photo take at a terrible angle of the one my mum had in her/my youth... Look at them wheels Steeb, LOOK AT THEM!!!

  35. Right so heres a couple of updates, As some of you know we brought a Lifestyle Block in West Eyreton and have been here for a month now, and it has a decent sized garage for toys. Its going to be alot of work, so in-between doing stuff around the house / unpacking / throwing stuff etc, ive been tinkering on the 120Y. So far ive sold off all the suspension and just have the CA18de/t fitting kit to sell (any takers). And ive started stripping it for easy access to fit new suspension etc without damaging too much. Guards and bonnet off FJ still in the hole so that had to come out Mocking up the new front cross member from an a31 Cefiro It actually fits quite well - not to far away from the mounts in the chassis, will need a bit of cutting still though and i got some standard S15 front struts for $1 of TM just to throw in without springs just to see how it all looks together. Ive got ceffy front hubs etc like the ones in the pic too. Discuss //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?showtopic=24645

  36. Falcon is now 70mm odd closer to the ground. Has retained its nice right which im pretty happy about. I havnt replaced the stnadard shocks as they are all pretty new. ive been told fitting the shorter body shocks really makes the ride alot nicer, so that may be something ill do in a few months. Next will be sounds. Would like a standard Ford tape deck, fit some low key amps and retro fit some good speakers in the original boxs/dash. Standard springs VS Kings, pretty big difference.
