igor
Cool truck. Agree 11 mpg not conducive to affordable daily driving. Somewhat surprised at half ton load rating, espec given that the many low powered jap utes of that period were rated to carry a ton.

HumberSS
Always been curious of those standalone ECUs for the common rail Mercs, great to see someone using it for a conversion. @dmulally do this mate! There is one sitting at pickapart in np... Would love to know how simple these setups are if you have more details

There is one there now, it aint realy pretty but considering it was 8 weeks drive in drive out its acceptible.  On 27/03/2024 at 21:59, igor said: Cool truck. Would love to know how simple these setups are if you have more details the ECU is like any standalone, but Baldur supplies a great base map which you could definitely just drive, it is actually what I have been using up until now with only a few modifications to suit my setup. as for wiring and shit, it is pretty simple, you can look up the DID1 handbook and see if you want, but basically just a list of positions of wires on the stock ECU connector and the pin position on the new connector. You have to figure out fuel delivery and fuel pump relays , and key positions and shit, but nothing you wouldnt have to do with any other engine swap. If you want to do things even easier find a OM613, basically the same engine, but just the generation before, then you can just plug and play the ecu if you order the one with the OM613 pinout.

Hemi
Mannn Mr Rookie that is such a cool mission! love the truck and the camper even more. Im 90% sure i had a discussion with Diddy about one of those, or making one that used the wellside cargo hole things as spigot holders for a home made body, anyway. I saw you mentioned bags who what when and where! *edit had a quick look and you went custom. is that pretty much a simple set of bags bolted to the unbolts or nearby and then running a level sensor off the axle? or is it more complex? I mean tbh mine is probably going up as opposed to down due to the stuff out here but would be neat to know.

Truck campers are so legit, this one is quite big and weighs in at 1900 lbs dry so way overkill but it works great for us now that Ive put the work into the truck. there are heaps of dudes that make them out of pine and plywood with fibreglass over the top, I think if I was to build one I would definietly make it sealed rather than a topper style one. The bags are some home brew jank, they can be best seen here: You can see the heavy angle bracket with gussets that bolts onto the frame rail, and the bottom is just a plate that sits half on the axle tube with a radiased tab and half on the spring perch with some counter sunk cap screws. As for air, I currently have air lines with schrader valves on the end and a bike pump hahaha. plan is to hook up the mercedes compressor and a small tank though. My truck is about as low as you can go without a notch, if it didn't have the bags as soon as I put anything on the back it would be sitting on the frame rails.

That's all we ever had on dads VX landcruiser for towing. Worked a treat. Little digital keyring pressure gauge and you are set.

Spencer
Awesome dude, this is great. I have dreams of building a drag and drive car as the next deal for me, the street car rules here are gay (for cages etc) but keen on some turbo big block goodness in my life.
Roman
Thanks for posting, god these type of multi day drag and drive events. Just so friggen cool. I absolutely love that you're carrying your house around on the drag car hahaha. The bit about taking the other guys driveshaft cracked me up, I can just imagine it "Hey mate since you're totally fucked anyway..." 3
