Yeah if panel steel only then 0.6 is great it gives you more adjustability in the low range due to greater current drop through the wire stick out. (tip to work) 

Although is 100% rubbish if you need to weld some thick stuff. Wire is pretty cheap, Maybe grab some 0.9 as well and a couple of tips 0.9 tips, generally the 0.6 should be fine in a bigger liner.. 

 

My local engineering supplies sells Xcel-Arc which I use, but suspect it's all much of a muchness.

Yeah +1 for 0.6mm wire. You can weld some pretty thick stuff with it in a pinch. But for panel work, it's perfect. I've even gone as far with 0.6mm wire as to repair a table for someone which had reo bar as legs. Sure it wasn't ideal, but it welded the 12mm bars together more than well enough. Obviously for that job thicker wire would be easier. But for panel work 0.6mm is the go for sure. Have used it for 0.5mm sheet, 2mm brackets, thicker box sections, no worries. 99% of my welding is on just shy of 1mm sheet.

Also check it's solid core wire and not flux core (unless you're going gasless, which you shouldn't, because it sux) and you should be golden. Don't forget to match the tip with the wire too. 

Go with the big rolls if your machine can take it. I use the 5kg 0.6 from bunnings because it was easy to get and I'm lazy.

Ok , another question for you lads.

What company fills up argon shield bottles around Palmerston North ? I hit buy now on a gas bottle that came up on trade me , Its a 1.5m3 supagas bottle.

Also any idea how much it costs to recertify if it is due. 

Couldnt resist it and thought it might get snapped up..

Pisses me right off. Even with a new liner it struggles. Yes probably need to drop roller tension so it just skids. Actually maybe I cranked the tension prior to new liner and then didn't drop tension again.. oooohhhhhh

If you have not used 0.6 before... maybe you don't know that the roller has a smaller groove on the other side and you must take the roller wheel off to flip it around. Or at least mine does that.

Also, may or may not be relevant. On mine, the drive wheel/motor can move if you loosen the mounting screws, after many years of use, the motor had moved enough that you could no longer sufficiently tension the rollers.

sorry bout all the questions buttttttt, what type/size of pannel steel should I be buying for a ford escort to start doing repairs .

Ive hooked up my rig and am practicing my welding and need to start looking for metal to melt into the  ol girl....

Uncoated bare steel so will go rusty, but I find it is a bit easier to bend/shape than the electrogalv / zinetec sheet.

Usually I use 1mm, but sometimes 1.2 or thicker depending on the original sheet thickness.

I got some part-sheets of the thicker stuff in electrogalv from kia ora sheet metal in Wellington, probably somewhere in Palmy you can get it.

Have a look on your local marketplace for some crappy old snotter to get a panel off with a grinder. Should be reasonably cheap and small enough to use and chuck out. Otherwise if you get a sheet of 1mm you'll be tripping over it for years.
