  1. Awsome , thanks . I was looking into shrinking discs but unsure how they work. I will watch the video tonight.
  2. Hello again oldschoolers ! How do you deal with "oil canning' on a guard. Tonight on my escort I tried to heat it up and cool it down and then beat it with a dolly and hammer but it didnt seem to work that well. I think Im using a butane torch which does not centralize the heat enough and heats the whole panel instead of the percise spot im trying to shrink. Anyways , techniques and thoughts please.
  3. Found alittle rust hole and the panel is pretty lumpy and uneven. I will be smoothing it out with my hammer and dolly but it's only the front half by the bumper that is uneven. Pretty stoked with how good it is really.
  4. Bare metalled the whole guard as I was unsure of the condition of it under all of the bog and paint.
  5. Alittle bit of progress over the last few weeks. Repaired a hole in the left hand guard I found.
  6. This is a cool thread. Cheers lads
  7. Hows the weather out there. Its horrible here in palmy , blowing a gale and raining.
  8. I've got the cigweld 185 below that model. Havnt had any problems with it but I've been welding sheet metal. I think there is a picture earlier in this thread.
  9. Well tonight I decided to weld the patch panel in Not sure if I'm happy with it but will sleep on it. Still have to finish the bottom of the patch and also make an inside flange for the wing Fitch panel to fit into. I also took to it with a dolly and a panel hammer to try and sort out the low spots. Might give it a weld from the inside to get ultimate penetration.
  10. I was thinking 1mm as measuring the metal that came off it was 1mm
  11. What thickness would you guys reccomend for panel steel for an escort ?
  12. Thanks @Nominal. Was shitting myself that it would be expensive as.
  13. Thanks @kws. We have a steel and tube here in Palmerston North that sells sheet metal, im going to ring them on tuesday and see what they do and dont do. That site looks good , Il email them aswell.
  14. Hey could anyone give me an idea of what a full sheet of panel steel would cost now. Im after either a half sheet or full sheet of 1mm sheet metal/panel steel ? Thanks
  15. Finished work early yesterday so decided to crack into making this patch for the left hand guard. So while consuming some beers in the shed and melting , I had a go at it and I'm pretty happy with it. I follow 'Dave's garage ' on youtube and he is one clever mother fucker. I have learnt so much from watching his mk 1 escort build. Anyway here is the result , yet to be welded in and that's another challange.
  16. Yeah I dont need another project right now haha.
  17. I found a 3d printed escort van on ebay the other day. Any of you guys know how to 3d print models ? I'm totally clueless about the 3d printing game. He sells wheels and other parts too,and can make any model car you want Some of the painted models he is showing kinda makes me want one.
  18. Tonight I decided to tackle the next part of the left hand front guard. Chipped away at the bog and found this masterpiece underneath the 5mm of bog. Brilliant. Ohwell fun and games. I'm sipping my beer in the shed deciding how to tackle this. Maybe a cut and butt from fitzee. Mm
  19. And heres the finished product until I dummy fit the guard up.
  20. Will fit it with tech screws tommorow and that's where it will stay for awhile.
  21. Right , so finally finished this piece . Well finished until I can hang the door and the passenger guard . Then I'll drill the holes in the flange that goes against the grill by the headlight and weld the flange on properly. Ive left this tacked on in case Ive fucked it up and have to redo it. Learning so much and learning metal fizzing skills as I go Cheers
  22. Some of you really clever buggers should run your own "courses" on metal shaping and welding thin panel steel. I for one would partake if it was near palmy or wellington..... Food for thought.
