I’m welding a mild steel exhaust together, brand new fresh tube. Is it worthwhile or necessity to coat/paint the outside?

Not necessary but you can spray it with a high temp paint

I dont normallybother with it myself, itll outlast my ownership

unless there's a bolt hole in the end that you cant see in the photos id say its not to bad.

where the corner of the post bit comes down into the casting looks pretty un touched and that's usually where the stress would show itself.

just fuckin cert it cunt.

Welding safety ~

I need to weld on a bit of tube. I had an exhaust leak that got so weak a bit of tube/pipe deleted itself.

do you guys recommend emptying the fuel tank? The exhaust gets pretty close to the fuel tank.

I think I’ll just unbolt the cat and disconnect the muffler hangers and bird poop it off the car.

I’ve also got a lot of flammables, with no paint cabinet, also a bin that has rags soaked in thinners etc. so will move that stuff out of the shed while welding.

I’ve never done any exhaust work before, so if I survive this, I’ll be on to 3inches and faster sounding stuff

yea that changes things a bit.

that photo is before repair i take it?

tbh the repair looks pretty good, couple of gas holes in the surface which isn't too bad, tells you that 99% of the weld is homogenous and bonded to the parent fairly well.

i still reckon it would be OK.

The one with the red circles is the original one that I failed for poor casting

The original pic is of a replacement upright that "is definitely not welded"

Everyone I have shown the pic to says its welded

I, 100% think it's welded based on what I can see in the pic

The guy maintains its fine and just looks like that because he scotchbrited it

Unfortunately because it's a cast suspension part, welding = no Bueno

It looks pretty obviously welded judging by the different shades.

You could polish it which would make it even more obvious. Like 1500/2000g then a foam pad with polishing compound.

Or request a hardness test on that area vs the area surrounding it. Welded area will most likely be way off unless they have matched filler rod to parent metal but even then I'd say hardness would be different.
