  1. Decided to make myself a coffee table out of one of the original wheels from the Austin. A little bit cliche perhaps but still a fun wee project. Started with the wheel, a bit greasy and grimey from years of road use: Then I got a bar stool, cut down the legs, chopped the back off, painted the top black (so it didn't show up through the wheel) and put in two bolts to hold the wheel down: Hub cap before... ...and after polishing: The paint I used was colour matched from Car Colours in Albany: Sanded down and masked ready for painting: Primed: After final top coats: I put some shoe polish on the tyre to make it darker, and put on a glass top I got from another coffee table I bought from trademe and sacrificed: Finished!

  4. So as some of you know I used to be all about rotaries and mazdas, however sometime towards the start of the year I sprouted a chest hair and decided to ditch the childish triangle in favour of manly pistons and black smoke!! I also own a demolition company so decided it would be great as a crew truck, dust control, hosing down protesting hippies and associated pumping. Ive been looking for one of these for about 3 years, 99% of them are rusty and the commonly fitted 555 cummins V8s have electrolysis issues and corrode the bores if not looked after. So when i came across this one i was surprised to see its fitted with a Perkins Inline turbo diesel and Eaton 6 speed syncro gearbox (being a later model aussie assembled Inter/Acco) and the body is the best condition I've ever seen, a range of stickers around the cab indicate treatment with about 3 different kinds of rust protectant. It still fitted with all the pump gear and hoses, has the drafting lines for sucking water from rivers etc and is a fully functional fire appliance. I was originally planning on painting it black in the style of the american S.W.A.T team trucks, but the reception of the public and realisation of how freakin expensive/difficult it would be to paint a firetruck gloss black has prompted me to keep it red and just paint my other vehicles to match. So the future plans?? In the short term it will be tinted and sign written with my company details in the same font and style as the original fire service graphics. Next will be things like twin exhausts up the back of the cab and a decent down pipe off the turbo. Im going to attempt to find some red lights and the siren setup just because I'm sick of people asking if it has them, though i have fitted a train horn to it to aid in running red lights and scaring the crap out of pedestrians. In the long term I'm going to look at removing the artillery hubs and replacing them with newer multi studs and fitting front and rear Super Singles plus more as i think of it. Parking like a bawse...

For my drive back to auckland soon I'm getting my mates Work Equip 03s sent down (14x7.5), the a3as just sit too far with no camber and i don't wana add camber until I'm back home, ran out of time down here.

  6. Visited the dude i got the sideys from originally to grab a few bits to knock off a couple of other jobs. Got a 2L Cam cover for checking the the ign timing. Its 'pre raced', chopped down for easy access to the cam wheels and came with a nicely race-drilled dizzy shield to stop stones flicking up and cracking the dizzy (which was apparrently a common issue in rally for these cars - who knew!) Anyway, I blardy love it. Ignition Timing was also spot on Also picked up a couple of 2L 131 secondaries hoping to just be able to bolt one up. However, the routing is quite different between the two cars (131 - 125)! L-R 131 OEM 34mm ID, 131 exhaust shop special 36mm ID, 125 OEM 34mm ID 125 has a much longer pipe run which is good, but has more tight bends which is not good. Ended up using the top 40mm off the bigger diameter 131 exhaust to 'slip' on to extend the 125 secondaries about 15-20mm vertically, which is all it needed to fit perfectly. Next Job: Test drive! up the road a couple of times, then around the block, and then to the shop to get a paper. Great success, went the long way round and got it into 5th for a bit too It feels way more solid all round, pulls well (ohhh the tourque) from all revs and the induction noise is just great. Did a wheely on dry pavement. Wet is just cheating now. No problems starting when hot or cold. No leaks, no funny noises Very happy, so gave it a wash. - Ajusted the clutch. - Replaced earth strap. - Swapped the spare OEM points voltage regulator for my new electronic one (solid on just over 14V now). - Put the Pertronix dizzy back in, along with the new HEI controller & special coil. No go, no spark. Old fat Coil back in, and runs off the Pertronix fine. Hope that the HEI is not a dud will check coil too. Car is sweet now, but still a few little things TO DO: - Fuel bowl in my pressure regulator is not filling - maybe (new) pump not working right on 2L? Maybe its time to go electric. - Put konis in. - HEI? sigh. - Put front croma seatbelts in (retractable) - move amp to under passenger seat - take all unneeded engine/tranny stuff to storage - strip croma - start turbo swap...lol

  7. Good weekend of small jobs all done. -Lowered the back a bit, -put some rubber spacers in the front and lifted it heaps- not as cool but no guard rub and will finalise when I find a set of steelies. -Cleaned up and straightened the scuff plates Bolted sub box down -More polishing inside and wiped down inside door jambs + paint where needed, -Finished installing 6x9s and tidied + hid wiring, -Got the glovebox lid sitting more flush -Steering wheel off to clean the indicator contacts and investigate slop.. There's a bearing in there that's rooted and might be missing a spring to stop in/out movement. The indicator wasn't returning on left turns but the dash stopped flashing so wasn't worried. Until I realised that it was continuing to flash. Must have looked like a tard until now. Made worse by the fact that the indicators are red, start off flashing slow and speed up. I have ordered a new relay in the hopes of fixing that. - moved exhaust up higher on the rear as the leading diff arm was hitting the pipe on decent bumps - thinners'd off more overspray - took the rear chrome arch trim off rusty side to investigate, not much to see so wire wheeled the scabs and zinc + painted. - made stops for the seat belt buckles so they don't need to be fished up off the floor - stashed my spare key in case of emergency - organised jack n wheel brace positioning - while I had the kick panels off for wiring I noticed that the air vent pull cable was gone. Found it amongst the spares so oiled it and freed it up, whacked it back in. Pretty cluttered in that corner with the handbrake release, heater switch and vent knob.

  9. Spent the day preparing to get ready to nearly work on the car. Plan to get the mystery package pintos down to engine builder and "temporarily" stored mates stuff onto pallet for shipping so I can clear and sort out my garage and get to work on my car slowly unravelled and I spent the day moving stuff around. My ridiculously over stuffed and inefficient garage seems to be breeding engines, gearboxes an car parts! I can see the floor only because one car and and two engines are out...

  10. Discussion thread: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/40381-shakotoms-1985-toyota-hilux/ Once upon a time i went off roading with a mate and decided it was fun playing in the mud. a period of time went by and I was driving my dads safari to work and was like yeah... I could put up with this. So i did some research and semi decided i wanted something with a solid front and rear end, that would be easy to maintain and relatively reliable. I thought about a Safari as I really like my dads but decided they were a bit out of my price range. So i though Toyotas are pretty bulletproof... so HiLux? Did a bit more hunting and found heaps of IFS ones. Eventually some solid axle ones turned up and i narrowed it down to two i was interested in. One being a real tidy 1990 single cab with brand new tyres, Rego, Wof and harldy any issues. The other being well the complete opposite. yet again the heart ruled over the head... So i towed home this ratty and rusty hilux because i liked the earlier front end rather than the newer one. Looking back it wouldve been easier to buy the later model one and source a earlier set of guards ect from a wreckers I knew it had a bit of rust in places in the body, but everything else appeared to be sweet and it drove fine. The more poking around I actually did after i got it home revealed actually how crappy it was. As i was told my one of my mates 'Ive seen better in a junkyard' and as i researched more about it there was way more missing, cut out or just not there in general than I realised. The surface rust in the fire wall and floor turned into a hole, after stripping the interior to see the extent of the rust i found it had got into the wiper channel aswell. the bit of rust in the sills turned in to big holes. The aftermarket bucket seats were barely held in by dodgy looking brackets. someone had cut a gaping hole in and the lower part of the radiator support was missing also. rear brakes were seized and pedal disappeared to the floor. and the chassis/components had copped a can of black over the top of dirt/grease/muck which was peeling off. But on a better note. The set of pretty much brand new 33x12.5 mud tyres my dad had on his pajero fit this, Its got a 2in lift on EFS springs, and the same on the body. The LSD in the rear appears flamin tight, and it fitted 99% of my wants from a fourby. Plus its a HiLux... There pretty much bullet proof. (well I dont think TopGear tested that, but it withstood pretty much everything they could drop on it, it off, drive it in to, going for a swim and their genral crazyness) Now ive had this a couple of months actually and in the doing so proceeded to start removing things to inspect/clean/repair/or replace as applicable, But that went way further than intended. Once the interior was removed, and the gearbox was out to replace the clutch, the engine came out too because it was too dodgy leaving it there without a rear mount, Dad and i decided that it was 6 bolts and we could lift the body off real easy to get rid of the gunk on the chassis. So we did. Next thing the chassis had been completely stripped and bare metalled, leaf springs split to individual leaves and both diffs dissassembled and everything has been given the once over. The chassis was covered in about a centimeter of gunk on the outside and we probably got about 10L of sand out if the inside of the chassis. Im pretty sure theres still more in there but weve shaken it, flipped it, banged it, and blown it out as best as we possibly can. So im quite happy with it Both diffs were dissassembled, baremetalled, and inspected. The front axle seals were leaking so the steering knuckle was full of an oil/grease mixture which smelt fantastic. apart from that both diffs checked out, So Ive etch primed and painted both diffs black reassembled them and ordered a swivel kit for the front. The chassis been etchprimed and blacked also. Hopefully itll stick a bit better and also make future cleaning of it alot easier. During all that, The leaf springs have been cleaned up and painted as well as the associated componentry. Every single Ubolt fought with me when being undone. My rattle gun wouldnt crack them and ended up having to use a meter long pipe over a power bar to undo them and then they all proceded to break or bend. So new EFS ones were ordered off 4WDBits with a EFS shackle bush kit. which were installed along with the reassembled leaf springs onto the chassis Excuse the tiny little tyres, but its alot easier to work on with them on The front leaf springs have been put back in and the diffs almost ready to go in aswell, but i managed to drop the hub on my foot and now have a cast on it for a week to immobilse it while whatevers wrong with it fixes itself. So hopefully thats off by the end of the week and itll just have to be strapped up. So lesson learnt. HiLux hubs plus feet = Less than ideal

  11. I'm not normally one for spamming with public service announcements, but I'm angry enough in this instance. Some cockstain stole my Grandad's car from Mobil Kilbirnie this morning, so I would appreciate it if Wellington friends could keep their eye out for it. It's a red 2005 Suzuki Swift with the registration number HMY771. He has only owned it for a very short time, so I don't even have any photos. Probably the only distinguishing mark is a small blue and white Auto Care Kilbirnie sticker on the back window. The local cops are obviously aware of it, but please give them a call if you see anything. Thanks!

  14. I spent this entire weekend between panelbeaters on Van, car parts shops, and the garage on this thing. Today was ment to be spent going on a facebook cruise meet in my mates MX-5 with him, but that was cancelled due to lack of people. I was sort of keen to start prep for paint on this as a learning curve for my Van. So went to bunnings and bought a cheap orbital sander, some sanding paper, and some flap discs for the grinder. Smoothed out and finished most of the welds from the rust repairs. gave most of the cab a rub down with the sander. tried to mask of windscreen. got fed up with it. pulled it out in one piece (victory). Lifted cab off chassis and pushed that out side Man the chassis filthy right now. Its so thick with dust and sanded off paint. Cab was flipped onto its back, and the underside was prepped to get it ready to prime it - I had cleaned it off back in march to paint it then but never got around to it. Primed the underside, under guards and most of the engine bay. Then left that to dry and came back later and gave it a couple of coats of the black paint I had left over from the chassis. all the grey you see is this seam sealer. I purchased this off the Wurth rep that comes through work because he said it was good stuff and cut me a mean deal on it.I resealed where all the factory sealer was that I removed and over the welds/patches. It is really good stuff, and has good coverage. but it is brush on and is horrible to spread and smooth out so unfortunately doesnt really look the tidyest. So next time I think im going to get the stuff that goes in a caulking gun as from previous experiences, it comes up a lot nicer. Once that was dry, I gave it another couple of coats of black which made it look alot better. And this. I sprayed this all over it too, Its rubberized stone guard. Hopefully should help protect underneath and minimise chances of stonechips ect. Unfortunetly I ran out of stuff halfway through so off on Monday to buy more. Close up of the stone guard and sealer on the underside. Looks really good. Once I get more of that ill finish underneath/wheelwells/enginebay then spray it all black again. All this work for something thats going to get covered in mud and dirt Ive decided on a colour for the exterior so need to get to a paint shop to price that up. Im pretty sure the underside will stay black, But should I do a black or body colour engine bay? Also, I think I need a new spray gun. The old one my Grandfather gave me is a great gun and mint for spraying primer, but seems to spray other paints a bit patchy and uneven so I think its a bit worn out. Any recommendations from you panel guys out there? Gravity fed or nah? I dont want to spend heaps, but dont want something Id get a crappy finish out of either. help me here ://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/40381-shakotoms-1985-toyota-hilux/ Thanks Disclamer *Im only slightly awkward, and I do have a social life. Im not a complete hermit/freak. :)

  15. Then we did some headscratching over what could be causing a noticeable hesitation in acceleration above 4000rpm, and (possibly related) a very strange idle flutter, both when applying a low amount of throttle. We don't think it's any sort of engine failure, catastrophic or otherwise, but there's definitely a plethora of vacuum hoses, sensors, pressure switches and diaphragms hanging off the intake, any of which could potentially be the culprit. In particular, this little bastige here: Anyone have an inkling of what it even does? It is attached to the throttle through a series of tiny little arms, complex linkages and springs, and only looks like it opens a fraction at WOT, even though it has a full 3-4cm of travel. It doesn't seem to have any other connection to the intake system, and the only vacuum line it does have is blocked off from factory (the little black cylinder in the bottom left of the 2nd photo) - if that's even what it's meant to be. Pressing on the linkage manually to "fully open" causes the car's idle to flutter between 1000-1500rpm rather noticeably. I have a spare 12A turbo intake manifold (which is missing this part) and fully opening the throttle on that one fully extends the arm which actuates this strange little device. Again I'm unsure whether it's designed to fully open, or whether there's some sort of diaphragm or air bleed which limits the amount of travel the arm has at certain rpm. Early EFI systems are confounding as all heck. Especially the 12A turbo setup, which seems to be a mystery to everyone outside of Japan. Discussion: http://oldschool.co....showtopic=27846

  18. This is my first time doing this so excuse me if it's a bit rough I've been a car nut ever since I was little and after years of saving, researching and dreaming, I finally got my first car, a 1985 Toyota Corolla EE80 off some family friends. I'm not very good at this whole photo uploading thing so I'll try get some good ones soon. She is pretty tight for her age with only very small bits of surface rust and low kays and it goes surprisingly good ( for a 2e ). Since I've owned it I have refreshed the ignition, changed the stereo and added a coby muffler for a bit of zing in the exhaust note. I was enjoying being able to travel around without being wet and cold as I've come from a scooter and then this happened. Coming home from the my Grandma's house in Whitianga I thought it would be a great idea to take the 309 road back to a friends house in Auckland and I almost made it . Some crazy Subaru driver cut the corner on me and gave me a bit of a kiss. 1 and a half months later it came back to me with a new guard and a front respray. Since then I have just been ironing out a few niggles such as no driver door lock etc. Future plans include roof racks, maybe a tow-bar and some retro rims if some come up at the same price.

  23. well its been a while, a whole load of hurry up and wait has been happening, i could have had the cab on well over a week ago, but they couldnt get the power car in the shed because other power cars were being worked on, then when there was a free space, they discovered that there was rust that needed to be repaired, which fucked me off immensely as it had been sitting there for 3 weeks, then they wanted to get photos for a fucken rail magazine, which was ridiculous as they had people who haven't even come near the cab pretending they were fixing something for a photo so its been a very slack week or 2, with lots of lunch time finishes (paid for a full shift so shouldnt really complain) any way cabs on so now i can do some wiring and get this piece running again the team, me with the ginger beard on the left, the faceless apprentice in the middle, and john the english fitter on the right, cab being lifted cab almost in place, with the apprentice and fitter inside trying to get the bolts done up so thats it, we got all the mounting bolts underneath and inside all lined up and torqued to a spec that we made up on the spot, i think it was tight with a wee nip more, quite precise us earth bond done up and thats it, now its a few days of connecting the wiring to the junction box in the engine room, (very tiny space for a 110kg 6'4" kiwi to be jamming himself for a couple of days) then run all the non original wiring from the engine room back into the cab, and then the desk cover and the actual guages and what not can be fitted, my money is on they wont have the desk repaired, but i have 3 weeks before i go on my euro motorbike trip, so they best be pulling finger if they want this fucken train done

  34. I got it sitting pretty up front, but it wouldn't turn and the arms were touching the inner guard. Real lame. Missed out on a few events over the weekend. Got some v8 hq super lows and we're back in business but it's 30mm too low. I plan to run some steelies so that will lift it a bit and will look into those urethane coil spacers that go where a factory rubber would go in a more modern car if it's still a bit boned. Polished up the interior handles, mirror bracket, painted mirror because it was aced, door cars pulled off in preparation for my 6x9 turning up 2moro. The doors have a big chrome trim that will get in the way of the speakers so will have to trim the surrounds. If it looks like a failure I'll mount in the back doors or kick panels.

  37. Received a bit of a "second wind" from my recent trip to the States, where I found a Craigslist post advertising a salvage yard about thirty miles out of Portland with two Series 3 Rx-7s currently being wrecked. So I set out in a borrowed vehicle from where I was staying in search of this fabled place. After a couple of wrong turns, I finally made it. They weren't kidding about the two Rx-7s! The first one was a genuine GSL-SE with engine and transmission still intact, but with a suspected pair of blown rotors. Rusting away with all the other wrecks. The 13B RE-EGI engine that Mazda decided to release in the USA instead of the 12A turbo. It still had most of its interior, but sadly I couldn't use any of the super lush maroon leather, which is a shame as the lower B-pillar panels that I desperately need for mine were still in mint condition. Will have to keep looking. Someone else had been here before me, smashed the lens off the cluster, then left it to rot in one of the rear storage bins. Yes, that speedo is in miles, and yes, it reads 225,521 However I did unearth this little knick knack beneath a pile of discarded trash in the boot. Being an EGI model, I'm not sure where it came from... quite possibly the other wreck (which had a 12A carby engine). It's now cleaned up and hanging on the wall in the spare room. Second Rx-7 was a GSL with grey interior, unfortunately most of it had already been sold and carted away. Grey is the least common interior colour in the USA and as a result it's very highly sought after. Bugger This one had a wasp's nest in the cabin with a shitload of the little bastards swarming about, and I was a bit reluctant to spend any great amount of time in its vicinity. Here is the only photo I grabbed of it. One thing has to be said about Americans - they are always extraordinarily polite and willing to help. One of the staff members wandered out with some tools and we happily rummaged through the cars while chatting about life in New Zealand - he'd never been there, but had heard some good stories about the place. In return he shared some stories about growing up in Idaho with three older brothers and driving to school in big block Camaros and Torinos and the like. Given the state of both cars I thought I'd be walking away empty handed, but amazingly, I didn't in the end... Along with the aforementioned air cleaner cover I managed to score the badging off the GSL-SE, a spare rear hatch "Rx-7" emblem, and the only grey bits left on the wasp-infested GSL - namely the horn pad and the front lower kick panels with mint speaker grilles. The cost all up? US$30. The proprietor even felt bad for "overcharging" me, and said I could grab anything else I wanted from the two Rx-7s for that price, but due to luggage constraints and the fact I couldn't actually find any other useful parts to hoard I had to decline. God bless America and its lack of so-called "rotary tax"! Hopefully in the coming weeks I'll find some time to fit the replacement kick panels to my own one, then finally get around to fixing the brakes, replacing the clutch master, and crossing a few more things off the list in my previous post. Like I said, this trip has given me a bit of a "second wind" and it would be a shame to squander the opportunity. Discussion: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?showtopic=27846
