I've bought part-sheets of steel from these guys when they were in Newtown.

https://www.kiaorametalindustriesltd.com/

I'd go with 1mm for panel repairs, and the inner sill is probably the same - check the what's left of the original.

You can get full sheets from steel and tube etc, it's not terribly expensive. This was my last order early last year.

Perfect, thats what I needed to know thanks. Looks like a couple of places in Wellington that can do cold rolled sheet, but probably cant get any until level 2, which is fine.

Has anyone had experience with the BOC Raptor Tigs?

https://www.boc.co.nz/shop/en/nz/boc-raptor-180-acdc-tig-welder-raptortig180acdc-p

Can anyone see any red flags? I'm pretty keen on one of these.

No experience on those/TIG in general really, but one thing I will definitely be looking for on my next machine when I buy an AC/DC TIG is pre/post flow control for the argon and foot pedal control. It does have up/down slope control which is neat and somewhat compensates for the lack of foot control.
This may adjust the pre/post flow based on the material thickness/type if I am reading the manual right, which would be good. Mine seems to just send it especially for post flow, which is a pain if you are tacking things as it uses way more argon than necessary.

I was going to buy the one on trademe cos its 200 bux cheaper. Hah.

Havent bought it yet. Trying to find more info about them. Can't seem to find any reviews etc.

But $800 with a 2 year warranty, cant be that bad?

UI looks shit but has all the features you'd want for casual use, sounds like a good deal at $800, i'm tempted!

There's a cheaper one only says dc, the others say ac/dc

It also doesn't have aluminium in the description and the others do

Don't get that one lol it's about 500

Doesnt seem to support foot pedal. How often do you tig welders use a pedal.
I've only ever welded with a pedal, but i can imagine that it would be a right PITA for 90% of welding jobs.

I can see why you would want one for more specialist jobs but have lived without it for the last 6 years. I think if you get to the point where you are wanting a pedal you would upgrade to a grunter machine as well.

Bunnings porirua wouldn't let me take a bottle in a hatchback. That was a few years ago though.

I use a pedal only because the torch seems to have been designed for midget hands putting the button in an awkward position.

I have also used a welder where the pedal gave proportional control and it was the tits just not at a price I can afford at home.

they have a pamphlet on the trade desk, if they give you any issues point to where it says passenger vehicle and not rolling around. IRL you will walk to the bottle cage, you will take it and theres no further interaction

as long as you dont smash the valve off/have it fly around in a crash

Threw one in the back seat today. He had to leave it outside for me to pick up cause he couldn’t bring it inside for some reason.

Also. If you’re not a trade (trade pass card) customer you’ll have to try and click and collect. Only trade customers allowed inside and , in silverdale at least, only allowed in half the store.
