  1. also, proof it has been out of the shed. all the neighbours came for a jack, colour looks different outside, got the carbs tuned a bit better, set the tappets, changed the oil, and then it wouldn't start. faaarrk!

  3. Redone the gusset on the front end because I wasn't happy with how it looked, should be much stronger now. Made a start on the handbrake linkage thing. Used some $2.50 block bearings from aliexpress, as I was not keen on paying over $100 for two in NZ that weren't even the right size (needed 12mm ID ones and apparently 12mm is a very uncommon bearing size) so would of had to sleeve 20mm ones to fit. The china ones seem decent enough for what they're being used for. My dad had an aluminium air bag tank that he was planning on using for another car, but it fits this perfectly apart from the mounts being on the back instead of the bottom. So might buy it off him, cut off the mounts and re-weld them in the correct place. Made up some more plates for seat belt mounts, this time for the floor. The retractor bolts onto the back and then the lap belt bolts on to the part sticking out. Also has a doubler plate underneath the floor with some captive nuts. Stripped everything off the doors to see if they needed any repairs. Yes they did. This is the worst of the two. Was hidden under a rubber seal and the strip that holds it in place. Left side door isn't as bad but still needs some patches as there was a few rust holes. Found some on the outside skin which is a bit annoying, but the patch shouldn't be too visible anyway. My parents are heading off to America soon so I made up a list of all the parts I need. Everything is so cheap but it adds up quickly. Hopefully it will all fit in their suitcases.

  4. installed the tiny lights last weekadded another nut to jam it in place and so the thread bit doesn't stick out to much.took the opportunity to replace the left chrome ring with a non dented one from my stash.clean and polish everything.the adjusters on the old ring were all lose and broken, so two birds, one stone.looks pretty good.tried to wire 'em up but no dice, I did get the left park light working just by fiddling around with the park light bulb and other wires, no such luck with the right hand side, bad earth I'm hoping? i think I need a LED flasher unit?

  5. After taking the engine/box in and out a good 20 times i think ive got the position sussed..not the happiest but im almost ready to throw a match at it so it can stay there. My issue was that basically the engine needs to sit lower as the driveshaft interferes with the hand brake whilst the engine is level, but i cant do that or else the sump almost hits the rack + i cbf'd making new mounts. so i tilted the engine back more but i found the dizzy was hitting the firewall, i also found the shifter hit the center brace when engaging 1st/3rd/5th. Cut both out sorted. next was the x-member i noticed wasnt going to work, then the trumpet was fouling the booster fff$$#!@#!! in too deep now, added a spacer to one of the mounts so trumpet isnt fouling, cut hole in firewall, completely chopped off the center of the brace now, i can use my factory x-member along with the ones i made...shouldve got that ae85.. next step is to make a few spacers for the x-member then on to making up the new top half of the tunnel..with my greeat fab skills this is going to be funn

  8. This is my house at the moment, consequently, all projects, trips, life in general on hold... Did get up for a boarding session at Remarks the other day however. Was a school trip though, so half my time was spent sorting out crying, sniffles, lost gear etc, and the rest was dealing with kids...

  12. Old dishwashers make good paint table things. Did some more painting, it was cold so I made a higher thinners to paint ratio it seemed to work but got a couple of bad runs which is annoying. Will let it dry for a few days and see if it will sand out. On the duck tail wing I got a reaction in a couple of spots, maybe it was because there was more thinners...maybe that Rustoleum fibreglass primer was a bit thin after sanding it back. I'll sand those spots back again and respray. Also replaced the silicon joiners on the intercooler piping with better ones, the old blue ones that came on the SR20 donor were super thin walled so decided to change now before getting the bumper painted and fitted. Black joiners: More black joiners: Black joiners as seen from a standing perspective:

  13. I'd do an auto for a car like that- *its never going to be a racecar * turbo and auto is good as it doesn't come off boost when it shifts * sounds easier to do in your case * a340 behind a 1uz I had, had a taller overdrive than a manual box so it dealt with lower diff gears better * soarer?? a340 has separate ecu for trans I think, surely there would be a non ecu controlled version also in something

  17. Granvia has been where I have been thinking I might get a trans from. But unsure. I will only assume they are all the same. But Granvias are cheaper for parts than super customs. Anyway sounds like steelies might be keen to seal my fate on this anyway. Auto it is. Probably.

  19. Have done a bit of running around in it now to let the ecu self adjust to the new boost level and 98 octane fuel. Gave it full jandal on Saturday from 50 ks its brutal glove box flew open shit everywhere, anywhere below 50 it just steps out sideways till it hits 3rd. 340,000ks now and owes me just over $3000 i bet its got a mid 14 second pass in it if can find grip.

  20. Hey guys, I've had to push the date back. Did not really want to move it any further back into the year but have had a few major set backs with my cars ability to get a WoF and drive on the road ready for the meet. As much as I would like to see the meet happening on the 23rd I don't think I would be able to make it happen. We have a few members that were away during the weekend that was set before but hopefully now we can get a few more numbers at the new date. Apologies to any inconvenience by changing the date. Cheers. Have updated the date on the first post....

  23. I actually tried to fire it up last Friday night, but the second hand fuel pump out of Darrell's HZ Statesman, which I've had in a box for a few years, had died from natural causes.I wasn't keen on changing all the lines and installing the factory pump, so I googled up the brand of the old pump and found they are a NZ company manufacturing these pumps in a Waihi, 95bucks delivered to my work yesterday, 5 o'clock couldn't come soon enough! I rusted home and mounted it up.This is a 2psi low pressure pump for carbs, they do a 4psi 6si a 6volt version and 24 volts version.I like it as it's small, in line, no regulator needed, and very quite. So after battling to find a good earth I ended up using the screw that holds the left service cover thing on.By now it was nearly ten at night but I've waited to long to let that stop me!I took it for it's first wee drive up and down the street last night, woke up all the neighbours and stuck it back in the shed as no lights is a bit scary!Darrel came up and we quickly realized the "to do" list is getting bloody small!-lights-seat belts-4 wheel nuts-brakes still spongy-wipersplus non wof things like air filters, sunroof etc...so while we were on a roll we connected up the lights.still no front indicators, but I'm sorting that out today.moved the power for the fuel pump over to one of the only on when car is on fuses, indicators I think?and holy shit! everything works! the wipers! both speeds! the horn, everything!can't believe it!!even though it is technically running like a bag of shit, carbs need tuning/jetting/sync, brakes where scary bad and the steering felt heavy as(might have just gottin use to power/no tiny wheel) it was awesome!I even gave it a bit of welly in second up the road and man, it wants to go!

  24. Answer to question #1- yes, postive and negative to coil, wire were red and black, not red and blue. I forgot about the compufire points replacement I've got in the 009.Answer to Question #2 - yes I have the big red wires in the correct places, has thats the only place they could go, just had to crimp a connection on the end of the wire between the starter and the Alternator.Still no idea about the fuse box clip thing!!!meanwhile....it's off the stands, ass starting to squat down.lost that sweet rake it had, just need to drop the front another inch or two!popped the muffler and rear valance on, easy.looking good.Darrell to the rescue again with his tiny little 1/4 inch socket set.sorted those pesky manifolds out! wired up the coil, oil pressure sender, Alternator and spark plugs.Should fire up nowspend a couple nights sorting out the fuel system at the front end, looped the line around to the front, through to the old washer bottle spot, which is now the fuel filter and pump spot, and back to the hard line under the tank.I have had this set up in my head for a while now, I had even drilled the holes for the fuel lines, but no hole to mount the pump, drilling into my nice new paint fun! but at least gives a good earth, the power for the pump is for the moment hooked up to the spare radio fuse circuit, which is always live, which is not ideal.Anywho.rear bumper and mutherfucking number plate bitches! legal beagle.bumper rubbers not fitting all that great, will fit rubber first, then bumper when I next remove the muffler as the bumper mounts are a pig to get to with that big ass muffler in the way. So the correct process is Valance-Bumper-Muffler. reverse of the way I just did it.time to fire it up.

  25. have hopefully fixed the worn out gas sender problem.I have no idea how much gas I have, but the old gauge don't work anyway, I can just look down the filler neck and at least I can full'er up now.And then as Sunday drew to a end...dells seem to fit. oh man those manifolds are right bastards! hooked up the throttle wire.made brumbrum noises.just need to finish wiring and install electric fuel pump, K&Ns should be here at the end of the month. So questions,1; I have a Red and a Blue wire coming from my 009 distributor, is one positive and one negative on the coil?2; loom has two large red wires in the engine bay, one goes to the Alternator?, and one goes to the starter?, and then I think one goes from the alt to the starter? my loom had no instructions, and because I've gone with alt from genny, this has changed a few things??Also how the hell do you keep the fusebox in place? I bought that little clip but I'm buggered if I can make that work!trying to avoid using a washer and wood screw like it use to have.

  26. I've been collecting timber from a sawmill 'up north'. Is my ute OS? I reckon it are. It's also bloody awesome. It has self canceling indicators and power steering, but everything else you need to do yourself. The objects in the mirror are precisely their own size and I need to get out of the cab to engage the free-wheeling hubs. I love that ute. Sadly the generator died last weekend (as did a number of other things). It's a real challenge trying to keep tools dry enough to use up there, but after forking out a significant portion of the cabin budget on a replacement generator I managed to finish another frame today. I've gotten a bit better at calculating tangents... but of course there are mistakes aplenty. Sorry about blurry photo. It was almost dark

  32. Turbo has been brought up alot. Im an n/a man and for the better part probably always will be besides diesels lol. But I think, if this had a turbo it would be to much. Shifting gears all the time and not exactly built to drift. But that can be up to someone who buys it! Im currently battling a cold after hanmer. Pissing me off as I just wanna get this fixed and cleaned haha.

  39. I must admit I've been spending quite a bit of time just staring at this thing, is that my car?it's come out even better than I'd hoped.nearly done with these bloody windows! screwed the felts in place.managed to get the scrapers to stay put, factory one piece window anyone? it's taken a lot of work but they are working well now, no rattles when you close the door, with the glass up or down, only a small 2-3cm gap at the front of the scraper, not bad."new" black door cards in place, handles on.I bought these NOS 67' window winders nearly twenty years ago, I get to use them now.I'm using 67 dash knobs to match these to keep the mostly black and chrome theme but also as a wee nod to my old 67, first love and all that, plus I like them more than the skinny early 60's ones.polished and fitted the rails the other night also.started taking the rag mech apart, pretty rusty.got the bows back today, looking much better!should look good after a wire wheel and paint.

  40. I feel the wiring is going to beat me on this thing, I've got 98% all hooked up and I'm sure correct, but the last few details are tripping me up. things like the wiper motor and switch which is because they are 2speed and from a later car they appear to need a couple extra wires, also the Alternator for the same reasons.Adding to the confusion is the loom seems to be missing a few small, separate small wires, like the one for the speedo light and one for the flasher unit, both of which I was able to salvage from the old looms.I'll be happy if anything works and it don't catch on fire! Also had a frustrating night last night trying to get the door window scrapers in, or rather to stay in! very tight work and my fingertips are sore today, was hoping to have the drivers door finished last night, but by 1am I had to give up!help!

  41. Go a bit more done over the weekend.zapped those door window winder things for 24 hours in the elecro-bath, came up pretty good!this process is just amazing! check it out!got the winder mechs painted and in.went and found all the seats and stuff, this is were it's been hiding for the last near ten years!got the VHT vinyl paint onto the door cards, one can used, will need more for the back seat, it says it works on fabric also, so I might do the fronts to match.I was kind of expecting the seats to be moldy or full of rat shit or cat piss, but they're as clean as when I bagged them up, which saved a job. Darrell helped me out AGAIN cleaned up the ol carpets and bung em in.big ugly rubber mats coz daily driver can still see my ass print! haha.not bad seats, if you squint they almost look like recaros. get in that hole you!door cards ready, spent a bit of time last night getting the window glass to work nicely, so soon.door scrapers, polished sunroof rails and door glass sills.sunroof mech, really in need of a full body off resto as well.all still working well though.cover has seen better days.top of the front bow.back and front together, getting them both drip stripped, hopefully there will be something left?? I imagine these are the most expensive parts on this pile! And!Front bumper and runningboards as well as seats and carpets! god damn it's almost a car!kids had to take it for a spin when they got home.

  44. So, as above I got some rattlecans made, and they were average, but I didn't realise how average, (and by average, I mean utterly shit) until I grabbed some balls, and blew a coat of paint over the guard using a paint gun, something I've only used for hi-fill primer so far. Farrrrk, I felt like a pro. Suddenly I realised how much better it could be, so I sanded it back, and sprayed it again, and sanded, and clear coated, and sanded, and sanded and clear coated, and cut it back, and realised it needed to be better, so sanded and clearcoated a few more times. It's still average, and would benefit from a proper cut and polish by someone who knows what they're doing, and I can see all the shit bogging I did, but for a shitty old coon ute, it'll definitely do. First blast from the gun: About 4 rounds of clear and wetsanding later A rough idea of how bad the fade is on the door vs the bonnet which was resprayed a couple of years back and looks quite good. I can see where the bog spots are sunken and shit. #fuckconcours to celebrate all this I fired the old thing up, chucked a beer crate in as a seat and drove it half out of the shed for the first time in over a year and washed off the dust and suddenly it seemed like progress was being made. Before with dust: After with no dust: Also good to check all the drains under the guards are working. Also before the excitement of paint, and in between coats, I finished a ratshit weldjob on the B pillar and bogged it and sanded, and bogged, and sanded that into a passable state. Still needs another bit welded in when I have some money for a gas bottle. All in all, possibly the best holiday I've had in years. And the next one will probably involve a crack at painting the rest of it.

  45. It's weird - I wasn't overly stomping it at all. Must've been 40 years of kicks taking its toll. Compliance was relatively straight forward for me despite the status of the bike. The bike had no registration history aside from the plate attached and the old rego label from 1984. It is believed that it fell off the system or was deregistered between the transition from paper to computer records. Basically I used the following things to get compliance: A signed declaration from the previous owner stating that I now owned the bike. A letter from Blue Wing Honda declaring that the bike was imported by Honda NZ in 1972. My original plates. This was all I needed to get compliance and it went through the check easily. The next step was getting permission from NZTA to use my original 4 letter black plate on the bike. Although it came on the bike, there was no history anywhere that it actually belonged to the bike. The plate wasn't in the system so with a few email back & forth to NZTA they let me keep the plates. I had to provide photos to prove the plates were in good condition (gave them a quick respray). I went through Red Baron in Auckland for compliance and truth be told, they couldn't have made things any easier. They pretty much did whatever they could to help me get my bike back on the road. Hope that helps!
