Interesting rear suspension design, I assume it has upper link bars as well? Does it have a panhard bar or triangulated upper links, or does it rely on the leaf spring to stop sidewerds differential actions? 

 

Fwiw valiant utes have the same sort of floor ranginess,  they are all the same as sedans under the tray floor.

 

HA HA NOW SOME OF YOUR BRAIN SPACE IS CLOGGED UP WITH THINGS ABOUT VALIANTS.

Cheers all, at this stage my plans are to clean it, fix what rust and niggles there is, make some secret compartments and then pootle about in it taking stuff to places.

But probalby not in a purple lace prom dress with my bad ass wrekking krew

Turns out these are longer than the 125 Belina (sedan), by around 300mm. This approach was also used for the Ambulance and Hearse body variants

I found this pick online of someone doing a rust repair and have removed a lot of the bracing but, it shows the 300mm lengthening section (with the X ribs)  between the what would normally be the rear passenger feet floorpan that extends behind the cab and the diff hump where the back seat would go. All that room wasted! No longer!

The same thread also shows the sills which are 4 layered vs the 2-3 of the sedans to make up for the lack of roof stopping it folding in half

This is an earlier model or a Polish spec one, as it has the shocks in the sedan arrangement (straight up from the diff).

On mine (export spec? late model?) the shocks are angled inwards like an Escort (and my 2300) to a cross brace but the massive holes for the shocks are still there, but the load area is also much wider as a result. Like the 125 and 2300 it has no rear lateral support other than the leaves, but i think the angled shocks would do better than vertical ones in this respect.

Because I'm such a spotting nerd, here's a pic I took of yours last year:

And that yellow CCH one, with a 125 front end, which I took a few years ago (and totally got busted doing so by the driver):

Gotta say, I much prefer the original front, as it reminds me of the way they looked when littering the streets back in my childhood in the UK. Does anyone know if a Polonez exists in NZ? I'll fish out the FSO advert in an NZ magazine I've got somewhere...

Pretty sure the 9 or so utes apparently in NZ were imported by a 'quirky' chap*, so unsure if there were any cars or not? A Caro** with a twin cam would be a real sleeper, but do not want.

Caro aka FSO Polonez pickup?  Fitted at various times with Fiat, Ford 2.0 SOHC or Rover 1.4 K-series, and VW or Citroen diesels.

I think you'd need to be 'quirky' to import some FSOs into NZ in the late 1980's. Anyway, here's the adverts, slightly wonkily scanned from NZ Car, February 1989:

Love the generic wheel trims, as seen on most slightly tramped up shit cars of the late 1980's. Lol at advert barrel scraping: "Tough as old boots" "Side indicator repeaters" etc. 

In line with my nerdish credentials, I've run the reg plate of that blue beauty and it comes up on carjam as never being registered, so I guess that's a system glitch, or it didn't even last long enough to be remembered on a computer system. To add further to my nerdishness, I checked the price plus GST (10% before July '89, if you're bothered) and that ute  would've cost almost $29000 in today's dollar!

That Polonez is RHD and has the same gash trimz, so there's a chance that at least one of them made it over here. Doesn't even have a reg plate, so maybe there's a NOS unregistered  Polonez kicking around in some quirky Barry's shed somewhere....

What I find amusing is that the old small utes from back in the day have a useful tray size not too dissimilar to all the common 'penis extension,  I wanna be a yank' modern utes of today.    1/4 of the width taken up by these modern behemoths is big flares for the awesomely huge wheels. The rest is ego.

Got behind a new dodge 2500 or some such aith duelies the other day. It took up the whole road but my tray was actually alot larger. 

It seems they don't use the tray and just also own a trailer
