yoeddynz
should i put the multi meter between pot and gauge and see what current its drawing because the pot does get slightly warm? Maybe it draws something like 10watts?
coldturkey
you can do, but the theory (ohm's law) says V = I R (or re-arranged I = V / R) Seeing as voltage is fixed at 14.5 volts the current only depends on resistance. (which is why a shorted piece of wire across battery terminals blows up in your hand, no resistance) Just measure the resistance, and buy a resistor that is well in spec of the maximum rated power (watts). When resistors fail, they fail like fuses, so no biggie anyway.
coldturkey
im probably confusing the hell out of you with all that ^^ Just use these two equations to calculate the 'power' being used: Voltage(volts) = Current(amps) * Resistance(ohms) Power(watts) = Voltage(volts) * Current(amps) Note, as resistance increases, current decreases, so just use the resistance of the potentiometer you calibrated (any resistance added by the temperature sender will simply decrease the current and therefore power expended by the resistor). avengertiger
what he says ^^^ or whatever (im lost) anyway it runs but does it drive is the gravel out the front full of skidmarks????????????????
yoeddynz
cool- yeah i sort of get it. good with watts and volts but add resistance and my brain starts getting hot. I'll just get a resistor and put it in. if it blows it blows. Nup dave- no skid marks yet sorry.
jakesae101
oh and btw resistors will always get hot so no need to worry unless its too hot to touch
yoeddynz
OK cool. whoops...a pun.
ProZac
If you can tell me what the thread you need for the fan switch I should be able to track an 85-90 deg one down for you . M16, or possibly M14 are the most common i think, but i haven't hunted for one in a while.
yoeddynz
Cool- cheers zac. Its m16 x 1.5mm. I'll do a hunt around local places too and see whats on offer etc and by how much they want to rip me off.
EvoBilly
hey i have a few smashed radiators at my place for scrap metal your welcome to come check out the switchs in them see if any are like what your looking for or if one of them could be made to work there mostly from jap cars tho
yoeddynz
Yeah cool- pm me ya number and I can pop round for a look. cheers
Beaver
looking good alex! wheels look hot! hate to be part of the band wagon, but I really think it needs to be lowered slighty....just a touch to take the edge off haha keep it up mate
yoeddynz
Yeah front is a little higher than the rear so will probably have to take a coil out at front. Not going any lower than that though- It'll get used on some pretty rough roads at times. Plus hows an old man to get from his high zimmer frame into a low viva? vivaspeed
Hey Alex, Those wheels look good tidied up and with the crome hub caps. Very 60s. What size rubber on them? The fronts look a bit small. The 205/60s I had on them looked quite different. Not far now from cert and road going?
yoeddynz
They are 185/60. Spot on as the sides are almost straight. I'm not one for stretched rubber that these young folk are all into... (its getting chilly- where's my cardigan?) Not long now but seriously run out of money. So just little things. Cert etc may have to wait. xsspeed
Just read full build, awesome stuff mate, between this and the housetruck you sure do some pretty sharp work
yoeddynz
cool- thanks for that I'm really glad I'm at this point now with Viva- just some little things to do. Tinker away. Its fun when I can read other peoples builds knowing I have my own little project almost ready.
