  1. Some photos from Sunday. Didnt end up taking many as just plain forgot. Two engines, an old army Dodge, some old British bike.. image sharing Me not very happy with the engine not sliding inplace onto the input shaft. I threatened it with a hammer (or a Hannah..) and it finally fitted in place.. photo sharing websites Next thing that has happened since I parked it up and has kept me entertained off and on for the last two days. Some of you will know about my woes from the tech thread I started. So I went to start it on Monday morning and adjust the warmup settings. But when I connected to the ecu and opened up the starting/warmup part of tunerstudio something threw its toys from the cot. Turns out that because I had updated my TS program a while back it didnt want to play ball with my older firmware on the ecu. So yesterday and today I have been sorting it all out. Luckily I am between jobs right now so have a few days off. I just managed to load the new latest code on this morning and the latest TS as well then spent the morning leearning my way around the new setup. The car started straight away but needs a bit of time to sort out the VE table. While it was running I noticed that the cam covers were leaking past the new seals (because British..) so I went back to my old work and grabbed the old mazda seals which I think work better. Maybe softer. I dont know. Time will tell. uploading pictures Very much looking forward to driving it tomorrow and seeing what the extra 50~60 ponies will be like in the hills!

  2. Not much of an update Pulled frame apart, the tail end unbolts which is convenient. Check out the coils, Lucas wat More interestingly, I found some photos of when I went to the '99 Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island. I managed to go as part of a 125 team so spent 5 days in the pits breathing two stroke exhaust, meeting heroes, yarning with racers and mechanics and generally having my mind blown. Tady Okada came in first followed by Max Biaggi and Regis Laconi, Kenny Roberts Jnr was in contention but retired after his tyre disintegrated. Valentino took out the 250 race and the championship. Was awesome watching the races from the pit wall Because I was just a young fella everyone assumed I was a rider, jeah I have a heap more pictures, will scan the good ones and chuck em in here

  3. Hmm it's been a while since I updated this... Long story short, got the frost plug thing sorted and then 2 days later my missus cooked the motor while on a roadtrip with her mates. *facepalm* Got it home and eventually found another E13 motor. Did all the usual stuff, waterpump, gaskets, plugs, and some gearbox bits, then slapped it in and went for a hoon. Drove it like that for a few months, then wof time came around and it failed on the old 110/90/R12 tyres being perished as well as a bit of rust that seems to have really taken off now that it lives a couple blocks from the sea. So I got a set of 14x6.5 Heroes Racing and some 185/60 tyres to replace the 12x5 cheviots and increase the rolling diameter at the same time. And have nearly finished taking care of the rust (which was down by the door hinges on both sides). It goes heaps better with the bigger tyres, and running a gps in it shows that the speedo is actually more accurate now than it was so I'm guessing it's alot closer to the factory set up now than it was. Next thing to do is get it a bit lower.

  4. Now, this is a story all about how My car got fixed-to get out of town and I'd like to take a minute Just sit right there I'll tell you how I made it to palmy from all the way up here Right, now my attempt at being the 'Fresh Prince' is over lets get onto it. A week before Palmy Swapmeat, I decided that the Commodore was going to be my method of transport for the weekend. This story starts in saturday and goes like this. I bought a new exhaust ages ago that consisted of extractors to a large pipe to two mufflers off a guy on Instagram of all places. The previous exhaust which was a cut up mix of VL log manifold and down pipe to VK center section to VL rear section, Developed a bad rattle between 2000-3500rpm and leaked heaps. the new exhaust was all one piece so I had to lower the subframe and drop one side off the diff out as I refused to cut it. YAY EXTRACTORS! much power, many fast, very wow The next part of preparation was to get the heater system/blower fan working. So on Sunday I pulled the dash out and plumbed up all the vacuum lines for the actuators and built one good switch out if three broken ones. So I had speed 3 and 4 on the fans and vents all working! I went out to lunch amongst this with Kateums and stumbled across a mispriced head-unit ($50 cheaper than the marked price YAY!) so was convinced to buy that (after owning the car for three years and wanting a stereo the whole time) and four speakers. Turns out Id have to wire that in from scratch, and cut holes in doors for speakers and figure out how to mount the head-unit. Extended wires to wiper switch and temporarily (read permanently) mounted that. Then sorted a little center storage compartment to finish below the dash for now. you can see below: Wiper switch right hand air vent. Temp gauge in compartment under dash. All light up nice and bright so super easy to see at night too Got car back together by Thursday morning, spent thursday getting gas, checking fluids, sorting tools, packing bag ect and Friday morning met at the top of the Bombays with a bunch of members from Manukau Road & Custom to cruise down to Palmy. Was probably the best drive ive had in a while. Big convoy and a nice spirited back road drive down. Stopped in Waiouru for gas/food. One of the cars in the convoy developed a slight miss just after waiouru (plug lead popped off) and another had a tire delaminate just before bulls. Spare didn't match due to other Pontiac they owned being american built not Canadian. run around to a local tyre shop at 4pm on Friday for tires to be swapped between rims. back on and through to Palmy. Went to swapmeat, bought a few things. Went to Kruzin Kustoms for a look. Attended OldSchool Saturday night shenanigans. Crappy Iphone night photo with Ogres Coon Father made us leave at 9am on sunday to head home. Went home via the Desert road. went exploring on the Tuikino mountain road but had to turn around after crossing a few smaller puddles before coming to this creek that was too soft to drive through and knocking my bumper off once Got car home and tucked it up in the garage for a well deserved rest. 1300km over 3 days and she preformed flawlessy. and Its absolutley filthy. Suppose ill give her a wash on the weekend

  5. Cheers man. Its never had a problem starting on the default prime pulse and cranking curve. Probably because as engines go its pretty standard really So it started first go on new setup and as I guessed it was very lean. This time however I just adjusted the warmup enrichment (I've learned a lot from the first time we started on MS over a year ago) I used auto tune to sort out the just above idle areas and then set it so it cant change anything below 800 rpm. I'll take it for a good drive tomorrow and auto tune it then I can fine tune it. So far so good though. Main thing is - I have not buggered the ECU!!! Cheers for all your help and advice. Ive still much to learn...

Car is in original condition so there are many little jobs to do to get it back to full glory, Ill endevour to keep you all updated, but for now check out the pics. I have also moved to Napier now so big shout to all the OS boys and girls down here give us a shout. Made the mistake of putting 91 in but quickly remedied the knocking

  10. I got it sitting pretty up front, but it wouldn't turn and the arms were touching the inner guard. Real lame. Missed out on a few events over the weekend. Got some v8 hq super lows and we're back in business but it's 30mm too low. I plan to run some steelies so that will lift it a bit and will look into those urethane coil spacers that go where a factory rubber would go in a more modern car if it's still a bit boned. Polished up the interior handles, mirror bracket, painted mirror because it was aced, door cars pulled off in preparation for my 6x9 turning up 2moro. The doors have a big chrome trim that will get in the way of the speakers so will have to trim the surrounds. If it looks like a failure I'll mount in the back doors or kick panels.

  11. OK, so this is my first ever project. Fair one, its not a massive job but I dont know much past general maintainance. So its gunna be a steep learning curve for me. I have a pretty mint stock SL/X with a mighty starfire in her. Exhibit A: I have also just purchased an SL/E that has a carbureted black 202 in it. Exhibit B: My plan is to remove the starfire from my SL/X and install the 202, power steering, brakes, suspension, trans, driveshaft, diff and tacho from the SL/E into my SL/X. The only thing more limited than my car knowledge is my budget, hence me not slapping a V8 or RB30 in it. Have started a project discussion for when my mates cant help and I need advice........might be quite often. Dont get me wrong, i am mechanicly minded and have worked on motorcycles for the past 16 years so im not a complete tard.... but have done bugger all to cars. Disccsion thread is started and the link is below //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/44627-terminal220s-1982-vh-sle-sedan/#entry1368578 Boom, let the show begin.

  14. Yes sideways I totally missed this but am keen. Are they in good nick? And yes that was me in ruakaka, was working at Marsden for quite a while, but home now in the mighty BOP. On another note I found out exactly why toyota tax is a thing... A while ago (about a year now haha) I noticed a dip in performance when it started running on 3 cylinders, figured I'd just keep running it til it died but hasn't yet. Had a fiddle with it today and found it holds 0 psi in #3, but still goes sweet as and passed a vtnz wof this arvo!

  22. So made some progress finally with the main chassis section all tacked together and heights checked for wheel mounting. Just need to finish the welds, find and mount a suitable castor wheel now I know how big it needs to be and sort out the push bar handle and mount. Then will be a roller and can sort paint and seat out.

  25. Wow. Rapid! Very rapid. Thanks to a very shitty internet connection tonight I cant put up any photos. But I can tell you all now that the 2.5 lives and sounds cool. I need to re-tune the ecu as expected but the engine started up straight away. Everything is just a bit lean on the table which is understandable. The whole swap took a lot longer than I was expecting. A few hiccups saw to that. First one was the exhaust 'Y' pipe not sliding off the down pipes as nice as usual. A bit of mild corrosion and me jamming them when trying to remove it made it a prick of a job without a hoist. Then, at about 10.30pm last night Hannah and I were still only just slinging the new engine in place. The bloody input shaft wouldnt slide in place easily as I was using a engine hoist rather than my favoured chainblock. Hard to adjust the engine angle. Finally it slide home and we called it a day. Today I had to remove the knock sensor adaptor from the 2.0litre as it was missing from the new one. Never noticed this earlier. Did it wind out easily from the alloy block where it had been covered with scum in the depths of the vee? No it bloody well didn't! I ended up taking the old block over to work and attacked it with the rattle gun. Still nothing. So attacked the block with the gas torch and finally it came loose. Its a 30mm long plug about 25mm wide with a fine thread so easy to corrode in place. Phew. So all to day it was clean and assembly time. All went ok today and finally turned the engine over to build up oil pressure with the plugs removed about 4.30. I cranked and cranked- engine spinning away fast and fine but still the light wouldnt go out!!!? Huh? weird. A bit worried...! Should I prime the pump?... hmmmm Then Hannah spotted I hadnt connected the wire to the oil switch. Ahhhhhhhh. Whoops. So yeah. It started first turn. A happy non- event there. It revs up so much quicker and harder. Fuck yeah! Gonna be fun. We couldnt really rag it too much tonight as tuning the leanness out (that'll be more fuel being burned damn it...mr scottish me, a Davidson, not happy about that...but hey) and it was raining hard enough I couldnt really see well...( lovely old pommie cars with wipers made for a desert location and a fan that more just agitates the air trying to prompt it in a polite British way to move along towards the vents if you dont mind, terribly sorry old air molecules, hope Im not upsetting you.....) But I still gave it some squirts and had a giggle. I'll post up some boring photos of engines on stands, engines on hoists and engines in bits tommorrow. For now its movie and chill time

  28. I felt a bit silly when I walked up to 2 dudes in the carpark just after I arrived. They were wearing dark clothes and had scraggy hair and beards (so, standard Oldschool car spec I thought), and I said "Hey, how's it going? Are you here for the Oldschool meet?". They weren't, and they looked at me like I was a bit strange. Awkward.

  32. Not much has happened lately. Lots of driving including some daily use during some of the crappiest weather we've had for a while. I purchased a non broken wiper switch so I now have wipers! which has been real handy lately. just need to sort some where more permanent for the switch as well as get my blower fans working as fogged up windscreens suck. had been running sweet until it decided to cut out in traffic in the rain on the way home from work and not restart (the one day I got to finish early) resulting being told to move by two stupid Auckland transport workers because I was stopped in a 'no stopping zone'. then having to explain that it had broken down and this was the safest spot I could coast into while waiting for my father to come to tow me home. It ended up being the crank angle sensor and the coil which appear to have given out simultaneously. They were replaced and (touchwood) its been sweet since! and spent some $$$ ^There 15x7 et0 and Ive wrapped them in 195/55s (Massive thanks to KK for bringing them up from wellington for me!) and if you look at the sill, you can see ive got side skirts now. Are VL calais factory skirts but Ive mounted them (incorrectly) as low as I can on the body. I think it flows well from the front lip. aaaaaand came across these at a price that was too good to miss, Genuine BBS RS in 16x7et11 and 16x8et22. Im going to sell the tyres off them and get smaller ones as the 225s are to square on the rear and rub on my guards to much.

  33. Finished the build and install of my original engine on Sunday. Took it for a decent drive today and it was perfect, just like a new car. Few pictures of the saga: This was stuck in one of the water galleries of my og engine! Surprised it stayed as cool as it did IMG_1668 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr And this is the sump plug of the smokey engine I'd been using for the past few months. Bits of 2nd gear I think IMG_2463 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr So the whole point of this rebuild was to fix this: (Watch the whole thing)Here's a timelapse of the final stages of the rebuild and install: And to finish here's a photo of it during the drive today. Excuse the jacked up height, made it easier to work on/get jacks under Untitled_Panorama1 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr
