The Buick was heavily patina'd. I did scotch pad with a diluted CLR mix and coated it with Carboline RIPO oil. Soaks in to the non paint sections, brings out the depth of the colour (and adds a bit of gloss) and most of all makes the water bead. I'm sure I'll be due to do it again. I have some in stock if you want to try it out.

How is the RIPO on the painted parts?

I would like the nicer paint on the car to still be quite shiny, like its been waxed.

I wonder how it would go if I buffed and waxed all the paint, and used RIPO or Penetrol just on the heavy patina. I get the feeling it wouldn't go well... but not sure why.

seems to go all good on the painted parts - I did the whole car. It gives a semi wet look to the paint

this sort of shows the reflection of the gravel

I used Sweet Patina on my wagon, just wipe it on and wipe it off again, it brings back some of the colour and soaks into the rusty bits, makes water bead off it. Can do more coats for more gloss. Seems good, but haven’t had it out in the weather yet.
The truck I just wet sanded it and used a matte clear coat, it lasted for 3 years sitting out side everyday, garaged at night, but has peeled off in quite a few areas now.
Clearcoat would of been good and maintenance free if I didn’t drive it so much, now it’s gonna be a lot of work to fix the peeling haha

Thanks for the intel @_Matt Thats kinda what I was worried about with clearcoat, as I end up with the cars outside quite a bit as well.

I'm leaning towards trying out the RIPO oil.

@Bistro where did you buy it from?

I was parked beside this at Cromwell car show. I asked if it was clear coated as it looked great, but owner just said he'd only cut and polished it. They lived in Alexandra tho so very dry climate, not the same corrosion issues as most of NZ...

Thanks Chris, can't wait to rip into some family adventures with it. Do you still have the Econoline?

Will you end out towing the caravan with it? If I could pull this off I'd be a very happy chap...

"Wouldn't it be great if we could tow the caravan with the Mustang" is pretty much what kicked this whole thing off

The vids I have seen use 0000 (superfine) scotch brite with added soap inside.

Thats a great video, thanks for that. What he's done there is exactly what I want to achieve, polishing up the good paint and protecting the patina.

I like his style too "Great things happen when you cut corners".

I get the feeling its going to be largely the same outcome whether I use Boiled Linseed Oil, Penetrol or RIPO, they're probably all basically doing the same thing.

What I don't want, is for something that starts flaking off and is hard to maintain. My gut tells me that the BLO might sort of "fade/wear/weather off" and be able to be just re-applied. Where the others sound like they dry a bit harder like clear coat and I've seen some comments about it flaking off. I imagine it might not last as long, but then you just wipe more on. I can't find any definitive answer to that on the internet yet though...
