cletus Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I've seen a vgg video where he describes what he uses, before he was selling it, and if you speak fluent Derek you can figure it out , ie earth ghost juice- mineral spirits I would suggest to buy it straight from him, but I don't think it can be shipped overseas? I think it was mostly mineral spirits and boiled linseed oil and a bit of wd40 or something like that Quote
Lord Gruntfuttock Posted January 21 Posted January 21 3 parts boiled linseed oil, 1 part mineral spirits, and you can add some WD40 to reduce the shine a bit. * I think. Seen a video referencing his recipe somewhere... Quote
Tiger Tamer Posted March 26 Posted March 26 Nice work on the front end and a cool project. Always nice to clean up old parts and replace the old worn and bolt on the new parts. Just wondering if you had the drums machined for the new pads ?. Enjoying the build. 1 Quote
anglia4 Posted March 26 Author Posted March 26 Nah I can’t see why you would machine the drum. In the past I would usually dress the pad to the inside of the drum with emery tape, but these ones were so big that I wouldn’t really do it without rocking them and just making it worse. Laying them inside the drum, the radius looked fairly close so I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that they perform ok. Otherwise I’ll have to pull it apart and try again. 3 Quote
440bbm Posted March 26 Posted March 26 machining the drums is best practice. but like rotors, you only get so many goes at it. normally when fitting the new shoes you would get rid of any lip on the inner edge of the drum and then measure the diameter of the drum to make sure it wasnt too worn. if you are happy with those, then go ahead cross hatch with emery tape by hand the surface for the shoe to assist biting into while wearing into the mating drums surface so its not already a glazed surface. 1 1 Quote
JustHarry Posted June 6 Posted June 6 @anglia4 How longs it been sitting? The filter could just be blocked. Especially if it's probably never had a trans service. 1 1 Quote
anglia4 Posted June 6 Author Posted June 6 Been sitting for yonks. i have a filter kit for it. Just need to get it as far as my dads hoist… Quote

Then needed a rebuild Perhaps you found the reason it was parked up Quote
Tiger Tamer Posted June 6 Posted June 6 Perhaps a bit of use to get the trans oil nice and hot as well and then flush the trans fluid before the new filter. It's probably going to be a bit cruddy in there. Our American friends don't seem to change the fluid out too much. 2 Quote
JustHarry Posted June 6 Posted June 6 @anglia4 If you drop the pan and clean as much as you can when you refill it pop the return line from the cooler off and pop it in a bucket so when you start the motor it will pump the 2 of 3 liters out of the converter . It'll probably run dry before it runs clean so careful not to run to long . Refill and repeat till jts clean. Then top up to set level That way your not putting that shit from the converter straight back into the new fluid 6 1 Quote
anglia4 Posted July 20 Author Posted July 20 it kinda looks worse in the photos than what it is. But there is a thin layer of black shit (friction material I guess) across the bottom. I’m ready with new filter and fluid, but don’t want to waste the fluid if this is a clear sign that it’s shagged. thoughts? Quote
anglia4 Posted July 20 Author Posted July 20 Ignore the grit, that’s off the outside of the gasket Quote
440bbm Posted July 20 Posted July 20 Clean it and send it. no drain on the pan? likely scenario its never had a service because of this... If its shagged, then you can reuse the spendy oil if you pass it through a nice filter to remove chunks. doubt it will get burnt in a short enough time to work out if the trans is no good. 1 1 Quote
anglia4 Posted July 20 Author Posted July 20 Nah no drain on the pan. I would say its unlikely to have been serviced. I have been leaning towards the clean and send approach. I'll put it back together tonight. 2 Quote
Lord Gruntfuttock Posted July 20 Posted July 20 I found quite a few bits in my C4, new filter and fluid and all good. Put a cast alloy pan on it with a drain plug. Are you using the Type F Ford fluid? I had to go to a speed shop to find it... Quote
Lord Gruntfuttock Posted July 20 Posted July 20 Not even sure what that is, or what trans you have, C6, FMX? Just as long as it's suitable... Quote
cletus Posted July 20 Posted July 20 i pulled the pan off my trans which had been recently built, there was a surprising amount of shmutz in there, trans guy said yep thats normal when you think about how a trans works it makes sense that all the bits of clutch and bushes etc has to go somewhere 3 Quote
