yetchh
you could always reverse it and go straight to westport via Blenheim/wairau valley and then do the cruise up to marahau with the rest of the cru..
Willdat?
Denniston incline, 12,000,000 tons of coal down a 45 degree slope. Built in 1879ish, pretty cool. And well set up for info/exploring now. Oh and Lyell has heaps of old mining stuff too...
Bling
Any sweet museums with mining shit etc? Am super down to check some of that stuff out. http://www.historicplaces.org.nz/placesToVisit/westcoast/BrunnerMineIndustrialSite.aspx Not a museum, but you can just park up and walk the bridge to the mine site. Some plaques around with info about the mine, heaps of old mining gear lying around and the coke ovens (memory is hazy, but it's something like that). Certainly worth a look. Map shows a different way to how I got there. I parked on the main road side (looks like a good carpark there now) and walked over the bridge, http://goo.gl/maps/3Elah Just on the left, you can see it from the main road on the street view.

Steelies
oh yeah brunner site is cool , went there as a kid etc. is it worth skipping reefton and burning up highway 6 from greymouth to westport/all the way to mot? kaokoura inland looks like a good ride/drive but mainly farm hills to look at, yes? kicker
If my great uncle in Greymouth was in better health he'd be keen as to yarn about mining, spent his whole career as a coal miner on the west coast. It was the family trade, my old man went down the mine for a look when he was young, he said 'fuck this' and moved to Wellington and became a builder haha Haven't been down that ways for a while, this might help http://www.westcoastnz.com/newzealand/history-and-heritage/
