Have you spoken to one? They usually will come and have a look for a fee. Also if you are putting in a rack, there really isn't any reason not to do it properly, shortening racks and making tie rod extensions are pretty common place to get this issue right.

Ive sent quite a few emails and phone calls to a couple of certifiers, as well as an engineer who does RHD conversions. Still haven't been able to get one to commit and come to look, so I'm kinda stuck. Bit anoyed about it TBH

I really need to sort the steering to go on with the project, finalise mountings for other things etc. so I can (hopefully) come back and rectify any B/S issues that might arise, later.

you wont have to get zero bumpsteer, it wil just have to be an 'acceptable' amount. LVVTA has not set what is an acceptable amount yet so i guess its mostly up to the certifier.

you may already know, you will need a 1D category certifier for this, the ones I can think of are

Mark Stokes, who I work for, hes quite busy at the moment and going away next month

Neil Fraser

Lance Walsh, although im not sure if hes still doing it at the moment

On my 131 I want to alter the front suspension setup slightly

currently the setup is the same as a cortina/escort with the swaybar also acting as the radius arm. The factory abarth cars used a separate radius arm and the swaybar was bolted with droplinks to a tab welded on the top of the lower control arm.

Also what I have seen done on a few other 131 here in NZ is to chop the inboard end of the LCA off, drill it and tap it then screww in a rod end to give camber adjustment and a spherical bearing mount setup. I would probably go for a rod end/spherical bearing on the chassis end of the radius arm also to give addition adjustment/solid mounting.

Given this is going on a "race car" with a logbook and authority card does this also need to go on the cert plate (which it already has for the supercharged engine and a few other things) if I do want to get the thing a wof?

Clint/anyone else: What's the deal with rear anchoring points for seatbelts in pre-1990 cars imported from Japan?

I have heard an unsettling rumour that the issue I had with complying my Rx-7 as a four seater now also holds true for other vehicles of that period with rear lap belts/no belts at all, e.g. Starions.

so will I need to have new anchoring points engineered, and a cert fitted at exorbitant cost?

to be 100% legal, yes it would have to be on the plate.

yep as KK said, has to be done. can be quite tricky as well in that era of sporty coupe cars as in some of them, there isnt anywhere easy to put the belt anchorage, because of the big rear windows.

Sweet, thanks :)

thing is, both of my Skylines had rear shoulder belts fitted without requiring new anchorage points, they were simply mounted to existing ones already present.

so second question: if anchorage points for shoulder belts are already there, do those just get used instead? Maybe I'll need to take a look at a Starion already in the country/NZ-new to see how belts were fitted to the rear of those.

if there is an unused factory anchorage, that can be used without a cert.

you may find some older imports that have been here a long time have anchorages fitted and no cert- there was a time when this was allowed

Well... you may recall a while back I tried using the factory anchorage for a 2 to 3 point seatbelt swap. VTNZ said it required a cert, as I could not prove the third anchorage had been used in this car when it was imported. Local certer said that is technically true, but no certer would actually be that fussed.

Not saying your wrong cletus, just a friendly warning to Ed to avoid super-duper anal VTNZs :)

are you talking about the kingsland branch by any chance?

It was the Henderson branch. I've known other people that have been there without issues, it may have just been that particular WOF dude.
