Dear Mr Cletus, if you would be so kind as to help me find answers to the following 95798625896234 questions regarding the certification of me soarer, that would be very, very much appreciated!

Whats the go with modifying inner guards? Is it ok to cut a small section out infront of the shock tower, and fabricate new, more roomier items?

Is it ok to remove the back seats+seat belts in a car and get it certed as a two seater? I recall something about having to weld over or remove the seat belt points when doing this?

Is 50mm of bump and droop enough suspension travel? Is there a minimum certable hight?

If you fail a cert, how long do you have to complete the work and go for the recheck?

Thank you very much for your help sir!

Whats the go with modifying inner guards? Is it ok to cut a small section out infront of the shock tower, and fabricate new, more roomier items?AS LONG AS YOU MAKE IT AS STRONG AS IT WAS ORIGINALLY, AND DONT REMOVE ANY CRUMPLE AREAS, OR MAKE ANYTHING CONSIDERABLY STRONGER AS FAR AS FRONTAL IMPACT ABSORPTION IS CONCERNED, CANT SEE A PROBLEM WITH THAT, WHAT YEAR IS IT?

Is it ok to remove the back seats+seat belts in a car and get it certed as a two seater? I recall something about having to weld over or remove the seat belt points when doing this? YES THATS FINE, NO NEED TO WELD ANYTHING UP

Is 50mm of bump and droop enough suspension travel? Is there a minimum certable hight?

NO MINIMUM HEIGHT -YET- THAT AMOUNT OF TRAVEL WOULD BE OK IN THEORY AS LONG AS NOTHING BINDS/TYRES DONT RUB/NOT MENTAL ANGLES ON ARMS ETC- HAS TO DRIVE WELL WITH NO POOR HANDLING ISSUES. CAMBER MAY BE AN ISSUE AS IT HAS TO BE NO MORE THAN HALF A DEGREE OVER THE OE SPECS, UNLESS YOU HAVE A MOTORSPORT AUTHORITY CARD

If you fail a cert, how long do you have to complete the work and go for the recheck? 2 MONTHS

Thank you very much for your help sir! INVOICE IS IN THE MAIL, THANKS FOR YOUR BUSINESS MR GRUMBLE

For motorsickles, i would contact Alex Gee, he specialises in 2 wheeled devices and is out west

Or Neil Fraser does bikes as well

Hi everyone I am fitting fixed back bucket seats to my aw11 mr2 and want to remove the front box section that the factory seats bolt to so i can mount my seats on adjustable rails at a height that i can still fit in the car with my helmet on for track days etc. Can i remove the section from the car what do i require to bolt the rails to the floor pan?

Coil spring modifications

2.3(16) Coil springs fitted to low volume vehicles must not be modified

for the purpose of changing the vehicle’s ride height unless

either:

(a) the spring is modified by a recognised spring

manufacturer, and the configuration of the modified spring

ends match the end configuration of the original spring; or

( B) the spring:

(i) fitted to the vehicle in its original configuration had

plain unground ends; and

(ii) no heat is used during the modification process.

if your springs look like this then they can usually be cut as the end is plain not tapered to a flat end. the spring seat is designed to take a spring like this

if your spring is like this it cant be cut unless its modified by a spring specialist to flatten the bottom coil like durty mentioned.

you could remove it, the main problem would be replacing the strength/stiffness in the floor that you will lose by cutting that part out

Mounting the seat would be another issue, there are different ways of doing that depending on what you do with that box section

Typically, you should not replace 'barrel' shaped springs with parallel shaped springs.

Prime example of why not to is the BMW E30, E36 & E46 rear springs, if these barrels are replaced with a parallel springs they will often coil bind before full suspension travel.

As they have a really low motion ration (<0.5 IIRC) this put a huge shock load through the middle of the trailing arm due the the long 'lever' action, and can bend the trailing arms.

Not to mention the undesireable / unsafe handling side-effects.

The likes of the *A6* toyota chassis IRS would be a similar example.

Heya Clint,

Here's a tech question you can relate to.

My dad has a VF hardtop which has had the roof removed. (On purpose)

What's going to be needed in terms of chassis reinforcement?

I've seen some nice subframe connectors from a mob called US tool co. (Or some such)

I think the factory dart ragtops had a triangular section inside the sills to stiffen shit up. and possibly boxed in rear something or others.

What would you like to see if this car came over your pits for cert?

We built a similar thing years ago(4 door) we welded some 50x10 box section along chassis rails and welded up rear doors before we cut roof off, then plated top of doors into where c pillar was. Local certifier approved. Car was in chch last i heard(gold with black/metalflake pacer stripes)

i havent done a convertible yet, its not very common these days

but i think if you replicate what the factory does or something like that, would be a good plan.

if it was me id make some chassis rails that tie those front and rear chassis sections together, and run some reinforcement down the insides of the sills.

i made some chassis connectors for my sedan when i put the v8 in it,, it made a big difference, the doors open and shut with it jacked up on a corner now
