  1. The exhaust was already 1 3/4" with a single RC40 muffler. I changed the extractors from 3-1 to LCB. Chucked in a light weight steel flywheel, heavy duty clutch plate and spring.

  2. The cylinder head needed new valve seats, guides, etc, so I decided to put it on the shelf and buy a ported big valve head. The rockers were pretty worn, so I also picked up some 1.5:1 roller tip rockers. The head sat around for about a year and a half before I fitted it. I had been grinding near the head (came wrapped in plastic) but it turned out the bag had a hole it, so the head ended up full of metal filings. When I finally noticed, I stripped it apart and gave it a good clean.

  3. much fucking around waiting for parts and changing my mind on things has resulted in it still not going yet. however the motor is in the car for permanent (this time round) and the only major bit I'm missing at this point is the intake manifold. so, whats been done? modify and strengthen the gearbox crossmember mount to bring it up to current cert regs head has been hardness tested, cleaned and reassembled with new stem seals. valves re-seated and stage 2 BC cams fitted. powerhouse racing pulley kit ATI harmonic balancer titan adjustable cam gears gates blue cam belt NZ EFI ultra high output coils with built in igniters other things. the block came with no engine number so i thought id better put one on it so i can identify it if i need to for whatever reason. 2016-07-13_05-58-18 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-07-13_08-41-27 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-07-13_08-43-57 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-07-13_08-44-10 by sheepers, on Flickr

  4. Discussion Thread So I managed to steal a KP bugeye off of an old lady today. She owned it for 20 years and one week. Total KMs are unknown, odo currently says 60,000. She did 30,000 in the 20 years she had owned it. It is a KP60 so should have a 2K in it. I had prepared myself to endure the mega slow that is associated with this fact. When I arrived at the house to pick it up I took a quick look at the engine and the block was red - a bit surprising "aren't 3K blocks red?" briefly went through my mind. The engine was caked in grime so I didn't dig in and look. So anyway, I handed over the cash, gave the old lady a hug (she was pretty sad about losing her baby) and hit the road. After about two seconds I realized that something was up. The car was faster than my Sprint. I kept driving and made it home without any mishaps, gave it jandal a couple of times and enjoyed the speed. I was trying to come up with a logical argument along the lines of "it has small tyres and a 3.9 diff, the Sprint has huge tyres and a 3.5 diff so that will probably make up most of the difference", but I was also thinking "this feels nothing like any 2K I've driven". A reflexive smile formed on my face. I got home and the first thing I did was took a look at the engine block. "Hmmm, there is no lug where the engine number usually is! What about up front?" So I looked at the front of the block and saw nothing except a sort of flatish area of black grime. I rubbed away at it for a few minutes and first I saw some numbers and then I saw a K and then I saw a 3. "Ooooooohhh this explains the power." It would appear that the engine was changed in 1996 and the car was never certified - "Why would you even certify a shitty 3K??!" I hear you say - and somehow the car made it through 40 WoFs without ever getting pulled up for it. I doubt it will ever be pulled up for it so the engine shall stay. The car leaks oil almost as badly as if someone had drilled a hole in it. I'm going to replace as many seals as I can and try to stem the flow. The front guards are a little manky from the old lady driving into cars/walls/people over the years so I am going to repair them - they look to be rust free. The doors have a little bit of rust along their bottom edges, the passenger one looks pretty much fine so I will probably leave it. I'm going to get the rust removed from the drivers door. There is some rust around the hatch window, a very small amount albeit. I'll get this done at the same time as the door/s. The passengers side of the car has been rubbed a fair bit by her driveway shrub over the years so could do with a decent buffing. The seats could probably do with an upholstering. The brake booster and surrounding area need new paint due to some sort of brake leak in the past. It doesn't look like there are any rust holes, or even very much surface rust in the area though. Here's a lame image of the car: It's the same colour as the Sprint, which will make storing paint cans easy. The only issue is that it is a difficult colour to mix accurately. I'll take some good photos tomorrow when I start working on it. I think the very top of the list will be the diff pinion seal and the upper engine seals. And about 30 litres of degreaser. Future (distant) plans: -Restore to as good of a condition as I can -Maybe upgrade brakes and suspension -Cert if I upgrade brakes and suspension I'll most likely have to sell the car before I move back to Auckland so I would like to get it into as good of a condition as possible by November. It might grow on me and I could end up keeping it. TLDR: My girlfriend buggered off to brass band nationals for the week so I bought a car without telling her. She might kill me when she gets back, but at least I have a 3K.

  7. I spent today cleaning the yuck off of the engine, giving it a tune up, flushing the cooling system and replacing the pinion seal on the diff. Cleaning the yuck off the engine was a huge job. It looks like the valve cover gasket started leaking about 20 years ago and was never addressed. There was oil everywhere. In some places it was over 2 cm thick! I scraped off probably about 5 kg of it by the end and used 6 or 7 cans of degreaser and a bucket of laundry powder/water mix. After: Before: The pictures really don't illustrate just how bad it was. I should have taken a picture of the underside of the car. The cooling system was just filled with rusty water - not cool! The heater core was almost entirely blocked and it took a solid forty five minutes of flushing to get it flowing freely and have no more orange colour to the water. I filled it with a mix of green coolant and water. The heater works well now. The diff pinion seal was leaking so I swapped that out for a new one. Hopefully it lasts a while. The diff may need to come apart at some point as it has quite a lot of backlash. Other than that the diff is actually really good, it is nice and quiet. I also put new oil in the diff. The engine has a bit of a rumbling sound in it. Could this be main bearings? I'll pull the accessories belt tomorrow and see if that stops the noise. It's definitely not a knocking sound. I adjusted the choke cable and set the idle speed and idle mixture - I had to wind the idle mixture screw in about 15 turns. Whoever set it last time was a numpty, spark plugs were kind of blackish from running rich. This weekend's job will be to tackle the damaged paint surfaces from where brake fluid leaked out in the past. The car also needs some low at some point in the future. It is ridiculously high. Here are some more pictures of the car:

  12. Fit buy pass valves. Quiet for Cert and WOF and loud for the track or when you just want more noise and it's legal.

  14. an ideal thing for those onramp lights would be a mental turbo v8 with a trans brake to do some commutering with well thats what comes to mind every time i go through one

  15. I kind of have to concede that I need them and I'll have to make everything else fit around them. Even if it means still doing a bonnet bulge it will be 30-40mm smaller than if I used straight trumpets so still worth doing. I've got a few ideas to disguise the bulge so it doesn't look too hideous. Once this rally is gone I'll have some spare cash to start buying things for this again =)

  17. I've just been watching a million docos on WW2 and I feel like if the russians rolled a million 4age powered hiluxes when pushing the krauts back then the war would have been over a million times earlier cos the germans would have just run scared It sounds like 17 chainsaws being dropped 8 floors into wet concrete, sensational.

  18. Awesome stuff Zac and I am truly glad you have found your real vocation in life. But I do think you need to step back just a bit and take a look at the elephant in the room. Your turbo FD thingee is going in the wrong direction. If you are to properly modify your car in the real kiwi way you know you have to remove the hairdryers, give the plates some mean as drill ports, fit a Nikki with mechanical secondries and a set of gillies. Then take it to work and show them white coat wearing boffins how a proper car goes hard. For what it is.

  19. So I finished off the last round of the sprint series run by Dannevirke car Club with Blizzo/Blake. Managed to beat him just in the end but the corolla was running like a massive pack of slimy balls and managed to slip the clutch too much on the last run and couldn't get it to hold 3rd. Placed second for the day but since he had done 1 (or 2?) more rounds than me and came 2nd to me each of the other events he was way too far in front to catch. Was happy with second in A class for the series as both Blake and myself were quite often towards the pointy end of the 1600cc class also. Day was wet and slippery and cold. I only had some crap old hard silverstones for the rear (they are rubbish when they are new yet along 5 years old!), and some very worn dunlops on the front. Was a narrow and short bit of road which I struggled to precisely attack without overcooking it. plenty of laughs were had though which is the important thing! Next on the list is rally Tauranga next weekend (17th July) at Tect park - come along if you're looking for something to do!. We DNF'd in this event 2 years ago when the engine expired completely so will be rewarding to get to the end of it. Seeded quite low so I imagine we are going to be doing quite a bit of passing - and hopefully no shunting! So since Nae Nae rd Nick organised a new Puk clutch for the exedy pressure plate to get rid of the slipping. Seems to work Ok but hasn't had a real test yet. Was also in need of a good service of new plugs, leads and some gearbox oil. The old plugs we were running were superseded and there was a resistor and non-resistor option. Got both and will see how each goes. Definitely running a lot smoother now and not coughing and farting like it was. Feels like we actually have all of the 88 horsepowers back now which is relieving! Also had questions over the strange behavior of the fuel reg. Would jump all over the place and generally just be unpredictable so ordered a new diaphragm and spring kit for $30 (they are only $6usd from summit GRRR) which did the trick nicely. When I took it apart there was fuel on the top side of the diaphragm also which explains the lack of functioning regulation. Its now super steady and runs like a dream very happy. New set of dunlops for the car too. Looking forward to having grip again! Looking forward to next weekend and not being hampered by how poorly it has been running. After that the car will head back to palmy into storage at Nicks for a while so I can focus on getting my AE101 racecar finished. Might aim to do one or two rallies next year maybe just to try beat Blake in the series this time.

  21. I made a new parcel tray - partly to cover the huge holes that had been hacked through the metal. Made a cardboard template and after a bit of trial and error I got the shape right. Also picked up a black(ish) vinyl rear seat and some new seat belts.

  22. I took it into what turned out to be the most expensive engine reconditioner in town. After the price estimates kept getting higher, I told them just to do the machining, and decided to have a go at rebuilding it myself. This was pretty daunting for me since I hadn't (and still haven't) replaced a wheel bearing or ball joint etc. Might as well start with the hardest job!
