KKtrips
Hi guys and girls I'm looking for anyone on here had a really good experience with their W5X gearbox being rebuilt? I'm pulling my one out of the Commodore because of grumbling noises in neutral from within the bowels of the devil. I expect it means it needs a set of bearings thrown at it. It was an unknown condition gearbox so may be other things to be found within too. So who has had a good experience with someone who is confident with these and will be able to rebuild it for me. I will happily send it to them within NZ. (or perhaps you have rebuilt dozens of them and can rebuild them with a hand tied behind your back and while getting head) I've been told they are a piece of cake to rebuild but I don't have a press and also I don't have the confidence in my gearbox rebuilding skills to take it on especially as it will be sitting behind a 308. I don't thrash it hard all the time but do give it a fang at the odd driving event so it won't be expecting to tame all 308 cubic inches all the time. Hearts and kisses in advance. KKtrips
I'd happily send to Timaru for the right guy. Is that the guy selling the DIY W55 rebuild kits on Trade-me?
thegreatestben
He has two accounts. one is rachmatt and the other I forget. If the account says Matt from Timaru it's likely him..
ajg193
If you were just to do the input/output shaft bearings, you could easily do it yourself without a press. Digging any deeper will probably lead to a headache though.
Roman
The reason I suggest Matt is that he's blown up 10 zillion W series boxes before, but now seems to have them hold together with 450ish hp in his race car KE70. I cant think of anyone else who would know more about what makes them blow up, how to make them strong, etc etc. Send me a PM if you want some contact details.

Matt is a wizard with auto electrical. i believe he uses the kit that Merv Hatcher developed. he runs Evoparts (or similar) in CHCH . would depend on whether you want a C/R kit or just a rebuild kit as to where to get it done. smokin'joe
Yeah I got in contact with him indirectly and you are exactly right. Cheers they had an offshoot from evoparts called go fast parts ? but can't get the site to load. i believe Durallloy Gears built the kits, but i don't believe it could be ordered direct from them.......... the C/r kit anyway, similar to some of the kits Palmside sell for the escort box
Dell'orto
Another +1 for Geartech. Not the cheapest option around (though not overly dear either) and they definitely know their shit
KKtrips
Chur - I priced Geartech up and they were pretty pricey comparatively (very pricey actually - like $100-$120 an hour pricey). I've scored a second gearbox with a brand new full rebuild kit ex Nelson for quite cheap. Lined up a place in Wellington to rebuild it for a good price. So now I can swap my gearbox in and out the same day and at the end of it I will have a spare gearbox which I can get rebuilt when I have more funds again.
be4ver
So where are the rebuild kits available from? Had a quick look on trademe but didn't find any. What are they worth?
