sentra
i wondered, but then got stuck as how would you make a 12x1.25 countersunk socket head cap screw out of a 12x1.25 grub screw? sheepers, blow my mind please, in 3...2....1..... UTERUS
Machine a nut into a cone shape and loctite it on the end of the grub screw.
M_C
Metric fine in CSK = not in stock. Could you use and end mill to get a flat bottom in the hole so you can use a normal cap screw which are available in fine ex stock?
sheepers
weld a nut on the end then turn a chamfer on the under side of the nut. you have the hex head from the inside of the grub screw and you're away. heat treat the thing after welding if you're worried about the strength but that's what i was thinking. easy. ryanfels
easy. Sounds like a walk in the park lol
Steelies
weld the nut on without deforming the hex socket, or reducing it's depth too much? not that i would ever doubt your techniques mr sheepers, just curious. alex how thick is the plate these are going through? UTERUS
I was going to saw weld, but my welding sucks and would no doubt warp it all if I tried that. Sheepers is a fabricator overlord so he's more likely to actually make it happen haha.
Vintage Grumble
Did you get some? If not, I can get them through Atom/boltholder for you? Unless you have tried them and they failed you?
sheepers
it wouldn't be to bad to weld the nut on the end. ive done similar things before without to much hassle but if you're having trouble you can file up a piece of copper and stick it in the hex to stop it deforming/melting. Simon
Is what ever it is centered with the chamfer of the bolts? If not you could just counter bore it and use a normal cap screw / bolt? Assuming there is enough meat in what ever you have to do this.
UTERUS
Or weld up the holes/countersunk bit, drill out the hole from the bellhousing/engine face side and use normal cap screws.
yoeddynz
I should have taken a photo but yeah the plate is only 10mm thick. So too thin to get away with milling/spot facing down into the plate to take normal cap bolts. I have spent today mucking about with it trying to see what I could get away with. I now only need three bolts. I am hesitant to tap the current m12 x 1.25 holes out to 1/2unf because unless I get the tap started spot on in the same lead as the original thread I could pretty much cut out whats there already- the difference in radius only being .35mm. Would be hard to judge the tap start position as the holes are clearenced about 5mm in. Asked about various places in Nelson and no luck. I know these bolts exist. Mr old grumbly cat- yes please if you can find out if you can get me some that would be great. For now the plate is held in place anyway- but I will need 3 bolts for sure. 30 to 50 mm long will do fine- I can chop longer ones down. Dave- I presume you mean tig nuts onto grub screws. Well I have only just bought my first tig and have yet to fire it up (building my welding bench first before the big 'first go' my tig skills are basically shit. I sure I would end up with no nut left and a grub screw firmly attached to my new bench....
eke_zetec_RWD
helicoil it to m12x1.75. profit.
bigmatt4
i had some made by the bolt holder in matamata for an adaptor plate to a 4age to vw bus box a few years back they are 12x 1.25 cost me about $12 each from memory think they were a larger countersunk screw machined down and re threaded

sheepers
i was going to weld them for you if i could get some. i suggested helicoils a page back. i reckon it would be worth seeing if you can helicoil it. would make life way easier.
yoeddynz
Problem is I have 4 engines and not sure which I will end up using. Would rather not end up helicoiling all 4. If I decided to sell one or two of them off on trademe to some mx6/mx3/ford probe(worst car name ever?) then their bolts won't fit. I want these bolts! They are out there. In fact I have just sent these guys a pleaful email.... http://www.nssocketscrews.com/stocksystem/stock/cat/Socket-Countersunk/subCat/Metric-Fine-Pitch-10.9/prodCat/METRIC I'll keep searching...
