FuzzayD
I bought a cheap arc welder from supercheap and it does its job alright but I'm wanting to weld car panels wich are really thin and can't seem to get any penetration without blowing a massive hole and if i turn it down so i don't blow a hole the seam just sits ontop of the metal with no penetration. I've been told a Tig welder is best for things like car panels but was just wondering what you guys think. Is it possible to weld car panels nicely with an arc welder? I'm noob at it so maybe its just skill.
tortron
just get a mig - wouldnt bother with an arc for anything that thin tbh (or get a nice tig - that would be sweet)

Hemi
Is it possible to weld car panels nicely with an arc welder? I think the answer is a firm no i concur , itd be easier to gas weld the suckers . mig is the way to go , well tig is due to its small heat transferrence

I think the answer is a firm no Hogans Ghost - would be epically awesome to see someone arc welding panels on - Fuzzay - I hope you saved game before buying arc welder - if so quit this game and restore to before purchase - if you haven't saved game - quit and start from the beginning of life again
cubastreet
yeah go back to saved game and buy a mig

shizzl
used an arc to weld the tunnel into the escort...worked better than the mig... just need skill haha
bubblegoose
you can but does take practice to weld sheet with a stick also the clean up time makes it twice as unbearable with a millions splatters and huge slug of a weld to grind off tig if you can but mig if you cant
Mike-e
panel steel in 100% cunty shit. welding 30mm thick loader frames for tractors is easy compared to panels. Arc? not going to happen sunshine. mig is still a compromise. if you want penetration on >1mm thick panels everything bends and goes rolly hay hay spec as it cools down. 1. pay someone who has the pleasure of indulging in that shit job all day to do it for you, or 2. bog it
FuzzayD
yEP SWEET i was thinking it was way to hard. I did end up welding my trans tunnel with it. Yeah definitely going to restore a previous save and when i get up to the lake princess I'll choose the tig.
ProZac
If you just want to weld panels, i'd pick up a mig over a tig any day of the week, way faster, wasy easier, and just as tidy. Less heat transferrence also, as it's a much faster process. Stay away from anything gasless though, eugh....

sheepers
i dunno about the whole mig Vs Tig thing. once in the last 5 years i have had to borrow a mig because i just couldn't reach/see to use my tig. but i guess it just comes down to preference. a tig is a more versatile machine, you can make things (like stubborn crank pulley bolts) hot without adding metal or deforming them, you can go back over a weld and tidy it up without adding material but i reckon it takes longer to tig than it does to mig. and cheap (lets face it, no one here can afford a decent mig) mig welders never stop having wire feed problems and generally giving you the shits. ummm, yea, get what ever you think is best. i like tig, some dont. makes no difference at the end of the day really. so in conclusion, i have been of no help. again. sheepers. Truenotch
Tig is a peaceful way to weld, it's like gas welding except with voltage. It's relaxed and tranquil compared to Arc and Mig. Mig is good for panel work cause it's fast and easy to do. You also put a lot less power straight into the metal so get less bowing of panels with Mig normally. Mig is noisey and sparkly as well - way more disco.
ProZac
When i think about it, i end up reaching for the tig any time i'm welding something on the bench, where i can sit down and really focus. If its on the car, and im just zipping up panels or whatever, the mig gets called into action.
Requiemk
I haven't done any tigging in my life. Is it not practical enough irl to just use for everything? also under same topic. Will i need to have 2 separate shielding gases for alloy and steel welding? A few seem to have a plasma cutting feature, but not the more expensive ones? any reason so? T-Rex
On tig use argon for both sheilding gas'. Also plasma's are balls
Truenotch
Plasma is awesome . Reke - you could use it for everything but it's sometimes hard to start a tig torch when you're in an awkward position, where as mig is more point and shoot. You'll find most Tig/arc/plasma combo machines are targeted at consumers and light trade users and the big machines are specialised to be Tig only because that's all the tradesman wants - they don't want the bells/whistles. And yeah, argon for alloy and steel when using tig.
