I used John Deere satin black in my morrie, like 15 years ago.  It's still on, still satin, still black. I haven't noticed any particularly gloss parts,  but I probably only wash the dust off once a year

Interesting. Painted lots of parts on my newer Pajero satin black and none of it has gone glossy. I just used spray cans, but the results aren't very resistant to scratches.

Got some hearty as pitted rust going on with this chassis leg. Have tried grinding/sanding/evaporust/phosphoric soaking and this is as good as I seem to be able to get it. Short of cutting this portion out, is it even possible to neutralize this before painting? Spent a long time on this, keen to get some paint down.

Wire brush on a grinder might get in there.

Tried that, no joy. It seems to be rock hard, almost like weld splatter but inverted.

OK, so sandblasting would probably work. I've tried picking at the rust with a scriber or something else sharp and hard.

Or get the grinder out and cut/replace that piece. It looks the pitting is quite deep and might be weakening the rail.

Another hack would be to zap up the pits with a mig then grind flat.

steel wire not that soft goldy coloured shite?

i had rust much worse than that on my container roof, in corten steel that was actually the full depth of the material thickness that the proper cup brushes stripped back.  so you sir are unlucky if whatever you are using isnt good enough.

like this. knotted cup brush.

Is it worth filling that whole line with mig blob and grinding smooth?

Probably - will see how deep this goes after the above treatment.

The ones they come with at Bunnings are what you want. If it’s just epoxy primer it’s not going to murder you, just use the 3m mask and supplied filters and you are good. 2k urethane you want to go to the next level and cover your skin and eyes best you can.

Gloves, hooded overalls, and glasses cover pretty much everything else

You should really have a positive air mask for 2k,  but as you are painting 1 car it's OK imo to just do what you can iykwim
