PAINT THREAD

I am slowly getting back into the escort, the body is going to take a while as I am still learning to weld, but i have the doors and boot lid finished, am i best to primer them and leave for another year, or paint them now? If im best tp paint it now what paint should i use?

leaving primer for a good amount of time before flatting and paint is good it will reduce the chance of sink back, but not too long as primer is not water proof and the metal beneath may start to rust

Based on my novice level of experience and what ive read here I'd say you would want to get it primed atleast but avoid painting single doors etc. one at a time. Think you would want to paint your upper coats all at the same time to avoid panels etc that dont match the others.

even in the best conditions a year is a long time to leave primer and possibly asking for trouble

if you have bare metal patches you can give them a light flick with some form of cold galv/zinc spray to stop them rusting and sand that off before priming later on

or use some form of metal ready stuff

about to start prep on the lada. Ive prepper a couple of cars before using wet hand sand and spray can primers and wasn't bad.

Whats the general preference to sanding the paint off? Wet, dry or shall I just get the ol' orbital and deal to it?

In terms of primer, might do cans again. The car is garaged with lots of room front and back, but only around 500 each side and I dont have the gear to properly spray it.

EDIT: Also in terms of taking vinyl stickers off, Im going to take to it with a heat gun and scraper, so im guessing mid temp around 200mm off the car with the gun sounds about right?

with a small gun 200ml + thinners will do it

davidian- you dont need to sand the paint off. if the paint already on it is in good condition then a scuff with a grey scotch pad will be fine or 500grit paper if you want to take off some orange peel.

spray can primer is ok for small patches (300x300mm square is about as big as id go) but it never truly cures and is not good for trying to build up the surface, more than 3 coats and it'll stay too soft

for stickers try a caramel wheel from a paint shop, takes the sticker and the glue off in one go ant wont damage the paint

thanks dude, will try that caramel wheel.

paint on car at the mo isnt too bad, mostly the clear which is tired and I want to respray in a similar colour anyways but dont have the setup to spray it properly with primer.

Since it's a dark red I thought I'd hit it with the red primer? As for curing, can I tweak drying time/temperature (heaters) and moisture (duhumidi) to get a better result? a couple of good coats will do methinks

tinted primers are only really needed with waterbased paints as solvent base paint will/should cover up fine

sand any areas the clear is flaking with 500/600 grit but scotch pad the rest (500 in the primer of course)

heaters will help the first stage of drying but a little time never hurt

dehumidifiers...hmm i dont think will help other than warming the room

for spot priming use a halogen work lamp about set about a 1 to 2m away helps dry it quicker without heating the whole shed

just dont paint it white

red+white+2 weeks later=pink

Thanks bubblegoose for all your help trying to get the car painted soon I have surface rust on most of the car was planing on degrease then hit it with Phosphoric Acid then do I hit it with etch primer or just primer sorry for the hundred dumb questions I've read this right up but so much info to take in as always I want the best for the cheapest price .

Its a Datsun so I don't want it to rust again

The funny thing is I paint roads for a living but the stuff I put water based paint down at 200 microns and spray at 2000 to 3000 psi
