  1. Motor came out after work like a boss. Loom is still in car tho, not looking forward to that shit at all Might just have to cut some relay wires and make sure I label them Anyway. Hole 2JZ No SHIT! And this is the cunty bit of chassis I cut out to try fit the hemi..... Thankfully I was smart enough to leave the cut out piece of steel just hanging out in the chassis rail, so I still have it. Will try steal the welder from work Monday maybe and weld it back in, then clean it up and paint it with iron oxide and some matt black to try hide the fact I'm an idiot Also, went to plastic welder today with my tail light. they kindly informed me they don't do tail lights anymore as the glue takes to long to set and people kept complainging shit took to long. then procecceded to go out the back and bring me the pottle of glue paint stuff they used, which he added a bit of thinners and said to let it soften up for a day then fill the holes, and will probably take a day fit it to set. I was all like, fuck yeah thanks heaps! I have time for this to get sorted so pretty happy there. Also have new front brake hoses on there way, will go over rear brakes etc tomorrow and figure out if I need cylinders as I suspect something might be up there.....

  2. ooooooooooooh right. finally started getting into this shit today. Going good so far, engine and box is all ready to come out, besides taking the loom off the engine. removing loom from car, is going to be a right fuck I think..... anyway... And the tail light I am concerned about, looks like it will need some sort of magic so will drop off to a plastic welder tomorrow, so will see what they say........ Super fun! will grab my engine crane tomorrow and have a stab at pulling it out of the whole Oh other things (more of a note to self) Require front brake hoses, and probably some form of none cut bump stops. amazing fun.

  4. well, that was a comprehensive fuck up. i talked to the guys at the paint shop about wet laying and i guess i didn't ask the right questions because I've fucked it up somehow. looks to me like the primer is still too wet and the whole lot is just running off the surface of the primer, but, i waited the 40 minutes i was told to wait and it looked how i thought it should have looked before i put the colour on and its not happy. ill go and see what I've done wrong tomorrow. hopefully i can fix it tomorrow night. bit of a fuck up but you get that when you don't really know what your doing. 2015-12-17_09-20-39 by sheepers, on Flickr 2015-12-17_09-20-57 by sheepers, on Flickr

  5. I believe for it to be a statutory declaration it has to be signed in front of a suitable person. I got a ready made form from VTNZ and it specifically had a space for a witness / JP to sign.

  6. Another cool thing (and reason for lack of progress, until now) is that I sold up and moved to a new house — with a nice big double garage with a workbench. yay. Also, time for an early christmas treat from the land of the rising sun. what's this?

  8. so i tried again. step one - remove all the red and all the fucked up primer and what not. sounds easy, not so much. ended up needing to attack with 80 gritt and remove everything, even the paint underneath. 2015-12-18_05-20-00 by sheepers, on Flickr step two - re-prime. 2015-12-18_06-48-16 by sheepers, on Flickr however, i was unhappy with the surface and what it would look like if i just 420blazed it over the top of this rough as guts surface so I've decided to just let it dry and ill give it a fix up tomorrow and then colour as normal. and in other news this is what a grand gets you in the paint world. 2015-12-18_06-52-30 by sheepers, on Flickr this is essentially the paint for the outside of the car. 4L of colour, 5L of reducer for the colour, 5L of clear and its hander. which should be more than enough. I've got another 4L of colour for the insides and whatnot which should be heaps. oh, and about 3L of clear. and 4L of primer should i need it. i think that makes my third tin of primer for this car?

  9. http://volkswagenownersclub.com/vw/showthread.php/30020-83-rabbit-4-speed-to-5-speed-conversion-issues-PLEASE-HELP Just dumping a link here for future reference. My car won't engage 5th gear at all. It was a 4 speed originally but I think I've found the problem. Thankfully there are two later model 5 speed gearboxes available from a friendly local wrecker known as 'Z. Dude', wait, that's too obvious. I'll call him 'Zebra. D'. So I will pillage some linkage parts and fiddle around with it eventually.

  10. oops, been a while. So I got the head off the spare engine, got it checked over and smartened up. Everything mated up sweet except the exhaust ports on this are the round version — the original head had the square ports. The ports all line up but the mounting bolts are in a slightly different place so the flange for the headers required some slight modification. Here's the new head in place: And everything back together and running: Been going again and used for daily driving for a while now, with no signs of issues so far, fingers crossed that's it (until the next thing).

  12. Ok people of Tasman. Listen up. There is going to be another Nelson vintage car club swap meet on the 6th Feb 2016. We went last year and it was pretty damn busy. There was some great stuff to be had (and must be said some pretty damn useless crap to avoid). Grab a fresh coffee and start sifting through endless piles of distributors, starters, wheel cylinders and badges for cars you've possibly never heard of. Shane bought some sweet alloys for his Ford Ltd. Dylan bought two Raleigh 20s joined together at the hips. Dean Rainbow probably bought everything and sold nothing. I was strong and didn't buy anything. It was also great for people watching too because for some reason these events always seem to lure out the most fantastic, weird, hoarding type, social throwbacks of car geeks/enthusiasts/nutters ever. So for the 2016 event we are planning on hosting a table for Oldschool members. We can all clear out and offload any parts/junk/old stuff/unwanted children. Start assessing your shed now and start a pile of stuff to sell. Shane or I will look into booking a table but going by last year no stress as there was still many spots to use. What we would also like to do is arrange for a club stand at the far end of the paddock where we can line up our cars for display. I'm not sure if this will happen though as if they let one club do this they'll have to let them all and its meant to be a swap meet, not a car show. But hey- we can only ask. Please throw your name on here if you think you might be interested in selling some stuff. If you only have a few little items then just throw them in. Someone can take them along.

  15. Need to re-scale it to get the exact figure, however stockcars minus driver have to weigh 1400-1500kg Mine is at the lighter end of the spectrum - and even with me in it I would still be under max weight lol

  16. Photo from the drag day (thanks Mrs OnTheTree): Finished the wheels earlier this week. Got some tyres and put them on. As a side note, does anybody else see a face in the drivers window on the first photo? Excuse the bit rubbish photos. I'm going to lower the rear by a notch later and take some better ones with a real camera.

  17. After much fluffing about i discovered a multitude of things wrong with the car. Every wheel was hand tight. Keep in mind i towed it from Ohaupo to Hamilton Struts were loose. Hence the clunking noise Front indicators now work because i put the relay where it shouldve been. I have high beam on the left light but not the right and have no wiring for the "gti double light" grill. Was told to hook them up as just fogs or high beam. Sorted a few nitty gritty bits here and there, eg window wiper motor is replaced. NUmber plate mounts are being soaked at the moment in cocacola. Cbf doing seats so i think greg should do them and ill buy him a pie.

  19. Time for a bit of a update; Welded the head plate, fish plates for chassis rails. Got green sheeted, had to tweak & alter a few things, lengthened the driveshaft. Took it out to a local black track for a run in, stopped, turned and seemed to go well, so rather than pull in and check I just went for it, went really rather well indeed. Made a few alterations after the test day.. Changed the diff head, radiator hose setup & fuel hoses. Near complete chassis Carby, Breather Setup Roof plate welded, hot work welding 10mm plate! Went to Woodford Glen for my first meeting in the car, had a fantastic bunch of people helping with the car which made for a stress free night, didnt have to worry about a thing. Proud to display RO Jones on the car, fantastic Job Scott & the team did painting the body, bonnet & dash! Stands out supremely well!! 33 cars fronted for the the night, I started all of them off the rear of the grid as I wanted to stay out of the way, whilst I get to grips with the car without pin balling around. First race went well in the fact I finished the race, 21st (22 finished), but the gearing was all wrong. Race 2 we put the RR onto the LR and the largest tyre I had onto the RR (225/75r15), instantly shaving 1.5 second off my best lap time from the race prior. Finishing 13th Race 3 we made no changes however the track was very slick and lots of people were spinning up. No faster this race, but managed 10th from the rear. Have a few changes to make again, and will try something with the rear end, but overall it handled well. Driver just needs to get up to scratch a little - more consistent. Big thank you to all involved who have helped along the way, advice, parts, time or materials. Thanks to the crew that came and gave a helping hand; Tim, Caitlyn, Crystal & Matt. - All made for a stress free first night. A few tweaks to be done, but overall very happy with the car finishing 3 from 3 races. Started them all off the back and went forward so that's a bonus! Especially big thanks to the Read & Blyth family's for their generous support throughout building the car. RO Jones for the painting of the Body, bonnet, Dash. Fast Blast - sandblasting wheels, components, advice, help in time & materials also Mag & Turbo of course for being on board right from the start, wheels, tyres

  20. All four wheel lips done, ready for painting now which will hopefully happen next week. Should have them on by next weekend. Also installed some more shiny bits in the engine bay. Raised the boost a bit too, goes noticeably harder now. See you all at the drags tomorrow.

  22. Fashionably late, this is what I was doing when it was slightly warmer than it is now. The Vintage Hot Rod Association holds an annual speed trial for pre-1949 vehicles at Pendine Sands, a 7 mile stretch of low tide smoothness in South wales. Top speed this year was 116 mph over the measured mile, pretty scary on wet sand and cross plies. I went up on the Sunday, a couple of mates were running cars that I had helped build. Poured with rain on the 3 hour drive down but the sun shone soon after. Bonnets were a new thing for 2015, a riveted fan blade let go last year and gave some folks a bit of a fright ! Hope you enjoy. Two new cars on the way for next year, it's already fully booked but I've got a ticket so all's well Cheers, Dan.

  23. Oops, didn't post a pic of either ! Daves Model T Coupe on an A chassis with a four banger and rod brakes. He managed 53 MPH which was pretty brave considering he hadn't actually driven the thing before. He's building a 32 Pickup with a 383 and a 9 Inch for next time. Steves Model A Sedan, Flathead V8, basically stock apart from juice brakes, dropped front axle and the chop. He ran 78 MPH. He's building a single seat T modified with a straight six GMC and a 4-Speed next. Cheers, Dan

  25. Some more new tings. Got some wheels off Cul8r (yes, I got all 4 before someone asks): Stripped the paint: Now I'm sanding: The plan is to polish the spoke faces and lips and paint the center bits around the bolt holes and the spokes sides black. Also put in my Wolfsburg steering wheel. And check my new radio, how's that for period correct? I've got my ticket to the twilight session at Hampton on Wednesday which should be good fun. However the car has had a bit of an idle issue for a while and in an attempt to diagnose it the other day I started unplugging and replugging things and now it's worse. Haha. Let's hope a throttle body calibration at least puts it back to how it was, as that was what I unplugged when it when worse. Bloody new school electrics, I do miss a throttle cable. I'll be going regardless but would be nice if it's running ok.

  27. So now that I've given the old girl a nice treat and the insides are pretty much all mint it's about time for something to break as a way of saying thanks, of course. Started to present symptoms which suggested a blown head gasket. Took the cylinder head off with the help of a friend who knows what he's doing (I mostly don't) and took it away to an engine reconditioners to get it planed and the various bits tarted up, replaced etc as needed. Naturally it was not that simple and today it turns out the head is cracked between the valve seats. Bugger. So I'll be needing to do something about sorting a replacement sharpish. I have a 4G51 from a Colt 1850 sitting in the shed, so I need to see if that will fit, fingers crossed they are the same. Some pointless pics: Also decided to give the rocker cover a bit of a polish while it was off (and I was still feeling some love for the car, before I found out I was rooted). Not perfect by any stretch but looking better than it did before.

  28. Put the polished manifold on today. I tidied up the injector wiring by running it under the manifold and gave the fuel rail a quick polish. Hard to stop once you start. I also installed this cool carbon airbox I got. Quietened down the diverter valve a lot. I'll polish the ends of it later on when I get a chance. Will also do something about the throttle body which is letting everything down, I was going to paint it but got a bit impatient.

  29. Rear layback and cross braces notched and tacked in along with front gussets and lateral bars (headplate and front hoop). Couldn't resist sitting the body on even though its not cut properly - sitting up at the front Started chopping body to get it sitting right still got the rear to go.. Onto shoulder plates next. Under rider and over rider bars welded on - thanks Colin for Bending them up, I borrowed his bonnet for a sneaky pic too..
