Help!

Some 20 years ago my brother bought a 1973 DeTomaso Pantera as a large pile of parts from Turners Car Auctions. The car had been in parts for a number of years (and owners) and had originally been owned and registered to a well-known NZ motorsport Personality and politician. The car has had a no expenses spared restomod restoration from one of the top builders in the country and is nothing short of a work of art.

The modifications have been approved by our certifier but we are running into issues with establishing that it has been previously registered in NZ. We have no registration number (long story!) but we do have the chassis number. We have established beyond any doubt that it is an original Pantera and consensus of opinion (including our certifier) is that when originally registered, 2 of the digits in the chassis number were misread or incorrectly entered into the system; a search on the NZTA database seems to confirm this.  The number stamped into the chassis (874*THPNNA#####) has been confirmed as a correct Pantera number,

·        The 874 is the model number.

·        T – De Tomaso

·        H - Assembled at Modena, Italy

·        PN – Pantera

·        N - Year 1973

·        A - Month- July

·        ##### – #####th unit built

·

Problem is we're sure the number was originally entered into the system as 874*THPVVA#####, which is a nonsensical Pantera number!

All the inspections and paperwork for the Low Volume cert is done but we have no proof of its original registration, Attempts to contact the original owner have been unsuccessful, he would be in his late 80’s by now. The irony of the situation is that it can’t be a scratch built because it’s a 1973 Pantera!

It's usually up to a vin issuing agent (aa, vtnz, vinz, drivesure)  to sort out ID issues

Is the rego on hold? Or dereg?

There is a form your certifier can give you which might help trying to sort it out

Well, what do you want to happen? I assume you contacted this number to see if it can be corrected?

Otherwise I suppose it will need to be treated as a newly registered vehicle like an import?

Assuming it's dereg. IF the THPVVA##### number does come up when searching (I'm not sure who is doing the searching, this should be the entry compliance place), you should be able to apply for an alternate docs approval (here), and state your case with proof outlining the Pantera VIN naming convention, proving that it MUST have been incorrectly entered in the system, and that beyond resonable doubt, it Is the same car, just with a few letters in the vin mis-entered. Then you should be away laughing.

A stat dec "should" be ok for the proof of ownership part. But will need some approval for the "proof of previous registration" part using the alt docs route.

I've used the alt docs route before, basically fluffed it with a whole heap of stuff so it looked like I'd researched the shit out of it and it was all approved. I think @kicker did something similar with when registering his KDX, which had no import documentation. Put all the email trail/pics of buying it through turners etc etc. Try and give as much info as you can, however irrelevant it might seem.

If this is approved, then its your golden ticket for registration. Just go to a vinz/vtnz/whoever and give them the approval and you're sorted!

So yeah, there are ways, but its often due to the attitude of the inspector on the day unfortunately.

We are presuming that by now the registration has expired.

If that's the case,  then the process @Goat described is the way forward

It will need a new 17 digit vin tag fitted before the certifier can submit the paperwork and photos

Hey guys. Made the mistake of putting this up in the For Questions Regarding WOFs/CERTs/NUMBER PLATEs  instead of creating a separate thread.

There's a lot happening here, would like to keep all up to speed with any progress made.

How do I move it to it's own thread?

Very curious who the original owner was. Has he been approached for a verification it was previously registered ?

If he has any photos it may tell you the original rego.

Can't see a Labour politician owning a Pantera. A few of the guys have become local body politicians. One currently Mayor of ChCh.

Thats for this Terry.

I own two cars with fuck ups in landata regarding the chassis numbers.

One should say P510, but the system says PS10.

The other one shows the engine number as J15xxxxxxxxx, and the chassis number as J15xxxxxxxxx. The body tag has this number, and then the actual chassis number as given by nissan.

I will ring these people next week.
