Popular Post 98cc Posted January 17, 2019 Popular Post Posted January 17, 2019 I have been foaming over cyclecars for a few years now and have been gathering a pile of suitable parts together. They are pretty much my ultimate vehicle with the simplicity, performance and character they have. My favorite of them all is John Bolsters 'Bloddy Mary' Based of GN cyclecar parts and powered by twin 1000cc JAP v twins with a solid back axle it was a weapon and held many hill climb records from the 20s-40s in various states of tune. It had a wooden ash chassis that John Bolster and his brother nailed together when they were teenagers and still survives to this day. I am going to be using this for inspiration for my car as well as Duncan Pittaways 'Hornet special' and a few others. Bloddy Mary GN Hornet special 15 1 Quote
Popular Post 98cc Posted January 17, 2019 Author Popular Post Posted January 17, 2019 We have had a big plank of ash leaning up against the workshop wall for as long as I can remember, got it down and put it through the table saw and thicknesser. Should do the trick for a couple of chassis rails, section is 2x3 1/2” First mock up, front wheels are 19” Austin’s seven and rears are 19” Rude MG 10 1 Quote
sheepers Posted January 17, 2019 Posted January 17, 2019 I really like what you're doing but for the love of Christ use metric. We left that fucking ridiculous imperial "system" in the 60's. 2 2 2 1 Quote
Positive Ape Posted January 21, 2019 Posted January 21, 2019 I agree that imperial sucks. but I went through a phase of calling a standard piece of framing timber "90x45" and it just became cumbersome. 4 x 2 is easy to say and it works. I guess you have a point about 2 x 3.5 though! Quote

Steelies Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Not sure why anyone would suggest metric if they've seen the things you've built haha. 5 1 Quote
tortron Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 Can supply genuine Morris bolts with metric thread and whitworth heads to keep the haters happy 2 Quote
rot808 Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 What engine will reside betwixt the wooden chassis rails? V-twin JAP? 1 Quote
98cc Posted January 28, 2019 Author Posted January 28, 2019 Yep that's the plan. The JAPs John Bolster used were out of Brough Superior motorcycles, unfortunately they are very rare and expensive these days as Brough's often sell for over 200,000 pounds. I have something underway that should do the trick though. Quote
rot808 Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 Scaled up V twin Villiers as seen on your velobike please 2 Quote
98cc Posted January 30, 2019 Author Posted January 30, 2019 Made a start on the springs today. GNs used 1 1/4'' wide 1/4 elliptic springs on the front and rear. A mate had some Morris 8 springs spare which are the correct width and a good start. Pile of springs The setup for resetting them Before and after. i have left one leaf out for now, might still need to take another out yet. And where it will sit on the chassis rail. Need to make up some brackets to bolt it to. 8 1 Quote

Its a pretty cool rotary hoe when its powered by a v twin! Made a start on the chassis brackets. Did them in two half's so could clamp them to chassis rail and get a nice tight fit before welding. Have also thinned down the rails from 2" to 1 1/2''. Looked a bit bulky and heavy before. Much better now Drilled a hole through it all and mounted the springs. Will need some form of U bolt to hold them down at the front. 9 Quote
