avengertiger
Sunday morning I boxed in the storage box and a mate Dave (avenger tiger) turned up and helped me move all the telephone poles out of the way. This now meant we could properly clear the area then start chopping down the Willows and Hawthorn trees. Hannah got a big fire going and we drank beer in the sun while burning branches from trees that I got to lop down with mr Stihl. This was all good fun. The area is looking better and better. Such a transformation from the overgrown scrubby area it was when we bought it. Fucking heavy telephone poles I was picking gorse thorns outta my hands all week fuck there are still some in there.they will be going to there ancestral home tomorrow morning. Looks much much better, now open that cobwebby wallet of yours and get about 50tonne of filling and get it down it isn't going to get any drier out there. When are all the old cars arriving?

Popular Post yoeddynz
Well since Im off work with a nasty flu like cold I guess I should update with some photos from last weekend. We had a really really successful weekend! My brother Duncan came over to help and between the 4 of us (including Kevin the cat) we managed to not only clear and burn all the remaining yucky leaf dropping non native trees from the build area, but also modify the driveway up to the second level so allowing the van to tow the cabin up there. First off- Kevin. Till now he has always stayed back in Nelson, looked after by the neighbour, on weekends we were out on the land. Not anymore. He came out with us on Friday night, curled up in a little ball sleeping between us in the van on trip out. No fuss at all. It was all quite a new place, new smells, new sounds, new sights when he woke up on the Saturday morning. We are really stoked to discover that as winter sun hours set in and it rises further north it comes up closer to the start of our valley. The hills get smaller and hence the sunshine hits the cabin at 8.15 am. Sweet. So I went for a stroll with Kevin to get some early morning photos and he was quite the curious one and it seems he is going to love going bush. looking down at the cabin- cosy. On the friday night, cool and clear, I fitted a chimney flue cap I whipped up at work out of some stainless sheet. There is a theme here.. Back to Saturday. We started by chopping down the remaining willows and the big nasty Hawthorn tree. We had bought another Stihl chainsaw, a secondhand 43cc MS231, which rips through the trees so much better than our old 30cc Stihl. Hannah got a wicked fire going and throughout the day we chopped, cleared, burned, drank coffee then beer. Kevin provided as much help as he could (for a fluffy cat)  As the sun set we looked over the much improved view of the mountains. I set the shower up and we had sausages over the embers before settling to the cabin exhausted but happy. the shower setup- works really well and we discovered that it still works without the 12V pump turned on as there is enough water pressure from the springs being at a higher elevation. But its great with the pump. Sunday morning I woke after not much sleep. Sore throat and I knew I was coming down with something. Thanks to my boss who imported a nasty cold to work and all the other got it over the last two weeks it was now my turn. By mid morning I was pretty knackered. We all set to work at levelling off the driveway up to the next level. It was all over the place and the cabin would not get up as it was. Luckily the ground was drying off as the last week had seen no rain. The ground dug well and we slowly but surely moved much dirt/clay. Duncan and I digging as Hannah moved it further down the driveway filling in the low spots. We are certainly looking forward to getting the neighbour to doing the major planned earthworks with his excavator in the future because this was hard slow work! By early afternoon it was ready. I ran the mower over the lower area we had cleared which was full of rubbish in the long grass and thick coverage of old decaying plant matter. We were constantly finding more and more bits of steel, old beer bottles, car parts. Seriously the grass was so thick and matted that one point what I thought was flat ground hid a bloody rear axle off a car, found by the mower! Or the old spinon oil filter- great mess made when you hit them with a mower. I drove the van round and round the circuit so to pack down all the shifted dirt. Then we hicthed the cabin on, bolted down the wood burner with some simple bits of angled alloy and lined it up. The van was fine but the low height of the cabin overhang meant it scrapped in places. I just drove and never looked back. Duncan and Hannah did the gasps and stressy bits as it scrapped up. But the driveway worked! No way would we have actually got it up there those two weeks ago when we moved it out there- not without having done all this. We had tried but luckily for the cabins sake the van never had the grip on the then wet and muddy ground. With it up near its new position we drank more beer and celebrated. I was now feeling pretty rough with the flu coming on but still very happy! Duncan left as Hannah and I set the cabin up in the new position. Its so much better up there- nicer view and no boggy ground. So soon we can get the excavator in and skim the mud/topsoil off and get some hardstanding down. Then I can start buying more old cars....

But it wil be after we build a cabin on ridge followed by a hobbit hole halfway up the ridge. Not that I am a big Tolkien fan. I just love the idea of a semi underground cosy getaway.
