morkster
i've got a reservoir that says dot 3 only - i bought some castrol response dot 4 which is suitable for all dot 3 and most dot 4 fluid applications - i found dot 3 hard to find

Hemi
as far as im aware 5.1 is also silicone based as opposed to a glycol-ether dot3-4 fluids .pretty sure that makes in non hydroscopic (wont absorb water over time).
Dell'orto
Nah, Dot 5 is silicon based, 5.1 is the standard mineral stuff. If you mix the two they turn to jelly Super Dot 4 can equal a Dot 5.1 as well, not all Dot 5.1 fluid is the same.
Yammies
dot 3 is the best fluid to use, but absorbs water like a motherfucker. DOT4 is the compromise and is also what most manufacturers use as it extends the brake fluid life as it doesn't absorb water as readily. In saying that, there is no reason you can't put DOT4 into a system that previously had DOT3. Any improvement will be due to a deteriorated fluid, and I would imagine that the majority of people wouldn't see/feel the differeence
DavidTheCreator
why is dot 3 the best?
keltik
Have used 4 and 5.1 in my wagon. 5.1 was an improvement over the normal 4 i was using, but still boiled on Taupo before my pads gave out. Switched to Motul RBF660 dot 4 and it seems to equal or better the 5.1 performance. I think on paper its actually superior. Either way, around manfeild i set my best lap times using it and made my brake rotors explode before i got serious fade.
KKtrips
Note for young players - you can't mix 3 or 4 with 5 5 is silcone based (repels water) 3 and 4 is glycol based (attracts water)
xsspeed
and 5.1 is? also glycol?
