kyteler
Dude, lucky escape with that fire. Assume you turned the key off to get out and check? Likely it's mechanical fuel pump and that stopped the flow thank fuck! Man that could have been shit-house. Glad it's sorted. Not convinced on the black steels so much but the rack for surfboard use and a visor is a mean idea. Spotlamp grille might clutter the front up too much. - i5oogt -
It is common to have engine bay fires in these. ive had one in one of mine too. the brass fitting that the fuel line goes onto is pressed into the carb and have a tendancy to fall out. I have a pile of spare parts if you need anything, I might even have one of those ugly spotlight grills somewhere when you do your 5 speed conversion you will need a sierra speedo cable as they are slightly longer than the cortina one
fuel
dude that's shithouse about the fire! when I did the carb I made sure those fuel hoses were on tight as fuck. also that dropkick on trademe still hasn't sent me those bits! grrr!
EURON8
Not the heat wrap was it? Dont they have tendancies to ignite?

Yeah i turned the key straight off and threw a massive bucket off water on pretty much as soon as it started.. hardly any damage at all, was pleased with the results. I was thinking of trying out some other colours for the wheels as its not too much of a hassle to change it. I've got a visor from my viva that could very easily be fitted to this so stay tuned might get a couple pics of it on very soon

johnnyfive
Woah, echoing the rest, lucky about the fire. My parents had one of these that I think was new when I was a kid. Apparently it rusted its way through 3 sets of front guards in the 10yrs or whatever they had it. I remember being glad when they got rid of it back in 95 maybe. Now have a soft spot for them. I like the plans you have for it.
Threeonthetree
Pintos and fire... But seriously, I'm glad you managed to contain it so quickly. I had a similar problem in my wagon. Being non-crossflow, it leaked fuel all over the exhaust manifold and flame-grilled a few hoses. I'm liking what You're planning for it, but prefer the steels factory coloured to be honest. anhonyb
quick question, is it an easy job putting an engine made for an escort into a cortina? I could be possibly looking at buying this ca18det and 5 speed which has been modified to fit an escort.. just wondering if they are the same? Beaver
well a pinto isnt a straight bolt in to an escort, therefore a bolt in motor for an escort wont be a straight bolt in to a cortina (with a pinto). will probably be a good starting point though, some of the more escort knowledgeable people on here shoudl be able to help. Raizer
Cortinas share the same engine mounts, the gearbox mount is further back in the tunnel than in an Escort. Might run into issues with the sump fowling the crossmember, cortina crossmembers are further forwards in relation to the engine than in an Escort and the front sump on a CA is a tight fit in an Esky. anhonyb
thanks for the info, im going to go check it out, he reckons the sump has been modified to fit an escort.. so perhaps it may squeeze in but as beaver said it should be a good starting point
mikuni
May be a silly idea, but just smash a 5 speed in this and keep it standard ish, pinto'd and tidy, and put the CA18DET in the Viva? Never thought I would say 'just leave a Pinto init' but I just did.

Never thought I would say 'just leave a Pinto init' but I just did. yup, its all just in the ideas phase atm, was just browsing trademe for a replacement engine as the ol' pinto is getting worse and worse at starting/huge bearing noises under any kind of load. probably just end up buying a pinto with a 5 speed already on and pop it in

anhonyb
I got the motor and stuff a few days ago, its got a motorcraft ecu box thing, with the model number 85GB-12A297-CB on it and a wiring loom I've only managed to figure out 4 of the wires so far, one plugs into the dizzy, one goes to a sensor on the underside of intake, one goes to oil pressure and the other goes to water temp. Theres still about 2 plugs and 4 other wires left, and a whole bunch of ones that have been cut does anyone know anything about these? Im just know its off a sierra

Im just know its off a sierra That sounds like the later system to me, is the ecu a big silver box like this? Think these had the vac advance in the box not on the dizzy. Or a small unit like this? The small ones are pre 85 or 88 I think and are much easier to wire up http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c33/r ... ecyign.jpg I know excort on here has wired one of the big cunts up and might be able to help you, but I haven't seen him on here in a while (thats his scort I posted with it lol) The main experience I have had with them is swapping them out for the older units in customers sierras when the big ones fucked out.
