Just built a nice solid bench cheers to Hayhole 4 assistance. And vice is bolted in place for 1st time ever so shouldn't drop it and break any more toes! SEE QUESTION HERE VvVvV Seeing as the sumps been all chopped up the dip sticks hits a different spot that's shallower now and doesn't measure accurately so i want to re make it all including a welded nut with copper washer + bolt on the end to seal when not using the stick as it leaked last time out when i didn't put it back in properly. MY QUESTION IS AT WHAT LEVEL SHOULD THE OIL BE AT? I have previously been a bit dodgy and just put 3.5L but struggled to measure and be 100% sure its correct. 18TH DECEMBER MANFIELD ROAD AND TRACK EVENT IS NEXT DAY OUT SO TRYING TO GET HER READY FOR THAT. I member having this issue in my escort. Dipstick should go into the actual sump and prob most of the way down to the bottom. How much oil goes in there is dependant on the crank I think. KKtrips Posted December 1, 2011 Share Posted December 1, 2011 Plug the hole in the block and weld a bung into your sump and insert the dipstick there - pretty sure some small fords have the dipstick in the sump bowl - definitely is the case with a lot of 70's Holden stuff so worst case you could cut one out of a holden sump and stitch it to the FE sump.. How high the oil level needs to sit in the sump to be a balance between too high and having crank splash and too low to uncover the pickup on corners - I'm not totally sure on but I'll have a google round and see what I can find. edit - it seems the common theme is that oil level should be just below the windage tray. If you don't have a windage tray then I would say 5mm below the lowest point that the crank counterbalance rotates. Once you have figured out where this is in the sump then if you make a sump bowl mounted dipstick hole (as I suggested above) then it should be piece of cake to make a dipstick the correct length with appropriate marks cut in it. Just below the windage tray would sound about right for it working, if i had one so will go with '5mm below the lowest point that the crank counterbalance rotates'. I like the idea of making dipstick of the side of the sump also. I would have thought you would fill the actual bowl up but not the flat part? Dont we have som vids around somewhere from Port Rd? Couldn't get her started for the life of me last night, hopefully its just super flooded so have opened everything up to let her dry out. Spark is very strong and appears to be fuel pressure and wet plugs just no happy ending. Inner guards all welded up. My name is Russell Posted December 6, 2011 Share Posted December 6, 2011 Yup got voltage, and seem to have spark now. hmmmm Was super close to running when i first got home after it airing out with no plugs in all day, So could be just flooding due to humid conditions and crappy G1V5? Starting to get stressful normally starts fine after a bit of cranking and don't want to miss this road track event! 2nd night of just trying to get it to run!, will go over everything again tomorrow with a fresh head. Not as annoying as having your hog pinched at-least! Could to much oil be the cause? put 3.5L in which I'm sure is how much it had previously. Gaz Posted December 7, 2011 Share Posted December 7, 2011 If you flood it should only take approx 30mins or so to clear out, flooding an efi engine wouldn't be as easy as a carb engine. My name is Russell Posted December 7, 2011 Share Posted December 7, 2011 Oh na hog not stolen bro, was referring to marku's FA that's since been found, man there would be tears if i lost another hog. Just got her running all thanks to Jason Sutherland! She was supper flooded. Plugged link into laptop to check tune hadn't been lost and was all ok. Have since saved the file. Then changed the cold crank settings to reduce flooding. (Settings > Fuel Menu's > Auxiliary > Cold crank > set to 20 > store(the "S" up top of screen)) for future reference. Then cleaned the plugs with brake clean and dried them out with a heat gun which worked extremely well it started first pop! Turns out just cleaning spark plugs with wire when you have wet plugs doesn't do allot, nor does un plugging pump relay and cranking engine over. Cheers again Jason! Track day progress is back on!
