Hey Russel check this out.. the guy just got it back from them in the very recent past..

Work was done by Tim Lloyd (Timo) at Octane Automotive in Palmy. Base cost for cage is $1650+GST but depending on what you want i.e. through to strut towers etc. it can go up from there. Its the best cage I have seen for the money, and they handle all the paper work too.

found this one from before he started stripping the car - will post more as I find them - it has an Mi16 which is renowned as a pretty dam quick and good motor amongst the French guys (ask Voldo) - the guy hopes to have 190hp and 800kg's once its on the track - He seems to be going fairly well with progress so would expect to see it out either end of the year or next Winter series at latest..

I just ordered a weld in cage kit from Racecraft Engineering in Christchurch. At $516.00 for a basic 6 point cage incl gst and freight to Hamilton, it's quite good value if you have someone who can notch the tubes and weld it in. The good thing about this is that its bent by RCE who has done over 2500 cages in the last 30 years and so you know it will meet the MSNZ regulations, provided it is welded correctly. You can also add as much to it as you want cheaply, as most of the other steel members will be short lengths and easy to add.

I'm hoping to do a cage building thread once the cage is completed to show how difficult/easy it is, but this won't be for another 2-3 months at best.

edit: puglet looks awesome kk, keen to be kept in the loop with progress on that if you can. Very similar build to my Vectra and probably a similar timeframe. He'll end up with a little bit more power and a little bit less weight than me though :)

Cheers for that Mikuni! Definatly sounds like an option to consider!

Any idea how much extra they would charge for chromolly?

keen on an 8 point with few extra bars and gussets to body.

Sounds like it could be a very good deal as last guy I talked to said cages are likely to be more expensive over next few months as builders will be trying to re coup the added cost of making new di's for these new main hoop sizes.

I would have thought most guys qould have pipe benders to cater for various sizes of pipe. I think that sounds like a bit of a cop out really. A lot of guys were already using larger sizes for various parts of the cage, so its not like cage builders have never bent 44.5mm cage before.

I'm not sure what the cost comparison is on chromoly but I have heard some negatives about it;

- It is easier to stress fracture over time than steel

- It is twice as expensive as steel and 2/3 the weight

- It is more difficult to bend than steel and for this reason, will be harder to go through homologation

I'm unsure of how true all of these are, but just points to consider when looking at building a cage. Personally I don't think the benefit (a tiny weight saving) outweighs the negatives (cost/difficulty/durability/etc).

RCE will be happy to give you a quote for chromoly also. Just email Dave at davemac@paradise.net.nz

Like any business they will always jump at any changes to increase prices a little - look at the recent gst increase and what prices have done. I have a quote here from a workmate from before the rule change of $450 for a basic kit excluding freight and my quote was $480, so not a huge increase but still possibly more than the increase in cost of the raw material.

Further on the chromoly, $1000 for a 15kg saving? Just do a nice cage that adds heaps of strength and then cut heaps of unrequired steel out/go on a diet/shit before a race/half a tank of gas/helium in tyres/2 litres of oil/no coolant. Maybe going a bit far, but 15kg for $1000 isn't a good return unless you need to gain 1/100th to beat some other arsehole in a very competitive race series with strict rules around tuning etc.

Yuh, moly is a waste of time unless you're in a one make class or other highly regulated class where every bit counts.

When was that pug cage done KK? The 44.5mm tube is freckling expensive compared to the old stuff... And Timo was charging 2500 or more for fairly basic cages before the regs changed..

** Edit** and it'll be something like a 4 week turnaround.

You have better thinks to do than spend $3 -$5k on a chrome molly cage IMEO

My Cortina deserved it as it was a gutless, old, class car - yet I never did it.

If yoo want mild steel then don't forget that I have a man. He does lots of Escorts, but I don't know how availoable he is ATM

Pretty sure he got it back last weekend.

I can't comment on the price sorry - I was just quoting exactly what another guy said on the French forum..

Cool cheers Mikuni advice much appreciated.

No worries, happy to try and help especially when it might save you a grand or two!

Also, received an email saying my cage would be made today, so I guess within the next week or two I should be able to report back on quality, maybe even start the thread and just update as I go.

FYI - this reply was last night - so I guess it means he dropped it off on Saturday AM and picked it up Sunday presumably PM..

(Markku I think the guys that you know that went to him must have got him at a bad time if they were quoted $2500 and 4 weeks...)

When did you get the cage done??

Last week. Finished taking the dash out on Friday night, drove it to palmy on saturday morn with instrument cluster and ecu cable tied to firewall. Went back up yesterday and picked it up. Timo also had a 205GTi in his front yard which I think belongs to one of his staff.
