Asking for a friend.

Does anyone know of chrome platers who would do a good job of wheels anywhere in NZ?

I feel like @cletus will have the answer and I'll sure more of you will have some great suggestions too.

I don't believe anywhere in Nz is able to it for a less than a crazy price. If they would attempt it at all. Something along the lines of the cost to build the anode jig to be able to throw current deep enough inside rim and spokes to get an even coating. Thats if they have the power capabilities to do something that size aswell.

That was what the owner of Progressive in New Lynn mentioned anyway, but its been a while so my memories probably not super accurate.

I've had things like pulleys done and the insides always turn out a bit shit because they weren't jigged.

Probably best your mate just rings a few places to get the more accurate yarn on it.

I think to chrome a wheel properly the rim has to be removed from the center so all the areas of the wheel can be polished properly , I dunno if it then gets welded back together then chromed or chromed then welded

the guy I work for is doing something along these lines for his current build, I'll ask him

Bumper replacements in onehunga is the last place I heard was good for chrome but that was a while ago

^ I heard of a guy having that done but had to weld centre back in after chrome which seems pretty retarded to me.

Bumper Replacements do a nice job but are expensive.

Progressive Electroplating are also decent

The "best name" in electroplating for car stuff in NZ seems to be Shiney bits in Geraldine.

When @datto_610 worked at Christchurch metal refinishers, (Oh how i miss him working there! But im quite sure he doesent)  he otfen saw parts coming in to be plated which had been polished. He said of all of them Gary from Able metal polishers stuff was the very best.  (The man with a black face, because polishing is such dirty work)

I'd always planned to use him to have my tridens shined up. But a good few years back, I'd heard he'd left Christchurch, to go work at Shiney Bits.

Yes there's quite some skill to high quality electroplating. But like spray painting an ultra high gloss metallic colour onto a car body, the end result is only as good as the prep work.

A good few years back Dad sent a huge box of jewelry off his yank mopars down there to get done. Some of it was irreplaceable. And was badly corroded pot metal/die cast.  They filled all the pits, and really did make a silk perse from a sows ear.  (At a co$t!)

I'd give them a call if I were you.

Wasn’t the place to use back in the day “onehunga polishers or refinishes”?

did crazy good work too

That's good info, thanks guys. I've passed on Shiny Bits' contact details for starters and he'll ask if they can handle a full wheel (I think they'll be alloys, so no way to remove the centre for plating).

FYI

These are the wheels my boss is doing. They have been polished but no plating yet. Centers had to be removed and get welded back in later

They had to be a specific old style rim , and he had trouble finding someone to do it, as they are not perfect.  otahuhu chromeplaters is going to do the plating, apparently the old guy that started the business is back running the place again

It took the polisher 5.5 hours PER RIM to get them to this stage so I'd hate to think what they will owe him when they're finished

When I worked there for a few months many years ago, the tanks were more than big enough to fit wheels into. I'd be surprised if they'd downsized them. I saw some really nice quality chrome come out through that place (I was on the zinc plating side of things)
