Big A's 68 Crown Wagon

Recommended Posts

Would be happy to hear your thoughts about my latest project. Looking to repower at some stage and also like to hear suggestions.

Was thinking 2GR-FSE engine possibly TRD supercharged if I could find one

I think I am leaning more towards the 2GR-FSE just because it's a newer engine and it has 314hp at standard which is more than enough for the wagon. Plus if I want to go a little nuts the TRD Supercharger off the Aurion would be pretty awesome. That's further down the track though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Have put a 1gzfe in ms55 and doesn't fit very well.   Not saying it can't be done but hits steering box and drag link arm.

Also about your chassis numbers for some unknown reason on  all my old crowns  the number on the chassis rail and body doesn't match.not much help bit seems to be the way they are

I helped a mate fit and wire a 1gz into his 1950 F100 - the oil pump position vs the rack ended up being a bit of a diddle so we swapped out the v12 for a 1urfse. Ended up swapping in all the factory ecu's and body loom with all the bells and whistles including retracting steering column etc.  Quite a mission but fuck its super rad.

2GRFSE has the same rear sump that my engine does.

This is probably going to want to sit the oil pan right where your steering box is.

Front sump conversion was quite a mission.

In factory config they have the steering rack mounted in front of the motor, so quite different to older toyota layout.

Yeah custom alloy middle sump will be needed. Then the chassis and upper arms will be in the way.

V configuration engines end up as pretty ugly and painful swaps into crowns unless you tube chassis the front end.

^ pretty much, the car is not a big yank whip from 1955 on so its not made for a v8 (or v6). Its made for a straight 6 with a mid bowl sump, the chassis is tight and the steering runs where a rear sump wants to sit. Even the later factory UZ crowns are a pretty shit setup, log headers almost touching the chassis, zero room in the engine bay. But it can be done and has, its just not fun or easy. JZ with a crown mid sump flies in there no drama, not sure on Barra sumps but will go in easier than a v6.

I have sat in-front of a crown chassis in yee old days with Sheepers and Camel, the verdict is to make a crown V8 conversion (and most likely V6) that does not suck you need to hack up the chassis. Something like get a Mustang 2 rack and pinion front end kit and then make some front chassis rails from the firewall forward, or you might get away with just removing the giant cross member and making something less obtrusive.
