GT_Escortina
After driving back from ChCh in newly purchased mazda luce getting as far as Ashburton i could smell oil burning and only running on 5cylinders i found oil in the spark plug cavity this what i found after i took the cover off clean up all the oil to find a hairline crack run 2/3 the way down the spark plug hole This is a pain in the ass place for it to crack as there is no way to get tig welder in there .Ive been phoning the wreckers and no one seems to have or had one (JE-ZE) ive seen this suff JB weld for a cheap fix.I no a bit rangi .the best way to fix this would be to replace head. Anyone got any other way of fixing or would JB weld work??

eke_zetec_RWD
Is the hole machined round and parallel to the base? If so make a neat fitting thin tube and glue it in using 3 bond.
SOHC
do you think you could safely heat it with the oxy acetylene? you could use those low temperature allly repear rods, I did a cracked gearbox housing with it still in place
governorsam
have used kneadit on my triumph clutch cover/crank cover with good results. handles heat and oil well. filled a hole in the side of an indian race bike with it, still there 2 yrs later. good stuff. wear gloves though. KKtrips
9999 times out of 10000 that problem is caused by leaking rocker cover gasket. Replace those and my bet is the problem will vanish. I use to replace those weekly when working for Mazda/Ford dealer.
GT_Escortina
i had ago with fixing today couldnt find any jb weld in oamaru the next best thing was some loctite poxy.Put it all back togetter was all good idling for about and looked to have stoped the oil leak tho after a short drive i stoped to check for leaks to find it leaking again. So im guessing that the head and the poxy dont expand and contrat the same and have let go. im liking what ztec said "neat fitting thin tube and glue it in using 3 bond" as there is about 3mm clearence ether side with the spark plug socket in there .Ive been to repco (thats really all we have here) for a rocker gasket they are wanting a part number tho can sell me a compete set!. Was nice day for a photo
cletus
Are you sure its a crack and not just a scratch? odd place for a crack. like Ktrips said, i also used to do bazillions of mazda rocker cover gaskets at my old job to fix this problem. also make sure you replace the little rubber washers under each rocker cover nut
brocky41
DEF do the the rocker cover gaskets etc first - i used to work for BNT and sold these daily to peaople like KK . even using sealant on the old ones does not work - buy new (about $20-$30 per side or you can get a set with both sides from memry and save a bit - ripco etc should have them too and it should fix it- good luck

Bling
Could be a dumb question as I don't deal with engines really... but can you weld it all up from the other side of the crack?

BlownCorona
you could try going into repco and asking to look at their ACL book, you might find a part number for an intake-plenum gasket in there. not everything they have available is listed on the online catalouge
