Rb30 vs 308

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon,

I would like to get more hp out of my current engine package (rb30t)

To do this I would need to first upgrade the computer. To acquire the new

Ecu and have it tuned I have been quoted about 4k. For the same price I

Could build a mild stroked 308. Has anyone had luck/experience with 308s ?

Should I stay with the rb30?

Matt

All comes down to what you prefer? 4k sounds steep for ecu and tune, is that to be wired in as well?

I imagine a warm 308 would make 250-280hp? With an aftermarket ecu on an rb30 I think you could make a fair bit more with a good turbo setup and even more with the DET conversion, but I'm not sure how hard/expensive that is.

What turbo you running?

RBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRB!

But seriously, for your ecu needs, just buy a nistune tool http://www.nistune.com/ and get yourself an inovate wideband with usb cable for data logging. Then download the software, and teach yourself how to tune. It'll cost you less than the price of a G4. And you'll be able to get your tune within kuwee before you hire a dyno for a day.

The nistune tool allows you to reconfigure your factory ecu to take larger injectors, bigger afm, etc ect.

The three-0-late isn't somehwere I'd go. you could build a decent 350 far cheaper. (As already said)

Wow thanks for the feed back lads, I do like my RB but i find the set up a bit

"wanky" with the blow off valve and such. Yes a 308 does sound nice. Tbh I am more

Interested In Doing skids and f'ing about than doing huge speeds and quarter mile passes.

A 350 would be nice you are right, something to consider. Suggestions on dyno places to

I vote 308/304 combo. Just cause I go for the underdog.

Single turbo conversion would be enough to get you in trouble.

$4k may not be enough for this though.

Underdog gets my vote too. Holden 308 with blow-through carburetted turbo setup. Can pick up a decent 308 runner for cheap. Bolt-on the rest and tune to suit. The cheapest way to get any power out of an early Holden V8.

I am toying with stroking mine. As I'm after a factory appearance, this would be the best option for me. But if power was the sole goal I'd turbocharge it.

But as to the original question, if you really want to make more power an RB30ET is a far more logical and cost effective choice.

In all reality the 308 has nowhere near the power-developing potential of the RB30ET and is a step in the wrong direction unless you're doing it for self-satisfaction/nostalgia/you just like V8s and don't care what others think

Power is only a small fraction of the equation for me hence why I'm sticking with the 308.

I can pick the sound without even seeing it's a holden. They're all flap, flap flappy, and uneven sounding if you ask me.

i remember hearing 308 statesmen with twin pipes when i was a kid and thinking they sounded funny.

fitting old style chev in a commodore is a bit of a prick, chevs have starter on our drivers side so it interferes with the rack, you can buy a chev into commodore kit but it spaces the front x-member down about 40mm, so you cant lower it fuckall and needs a longer steering shaft.

ls1 however, is a better idea, they haul ass in early commodores and moving the starter to the other side is not too hard, and its easier to find a good runner that doesnt need a rebuild

Thankyou friends, you have some what swayed me back towards my RB30, save for the BOV that is. The nistune idea is an interesting one thankyou. I would like to do a v8 in a holden one day just to be bogan. Any suggestions on where to start with modifications to the turbo set up?

i recon you should have a talk to any at X-tune(north shore, auckland) if you decide to stick with the RB30, he can chip and dynotune your factory ecu, then your only limited by your turbo, fueling and then internals, he is the man when it comes to boosting high comp engines tho!!!

usually round the $1100 mark for a chip and proper tune, (some road tuning for low-load drivabilty and then dyno to chase upto power and better knock checking)
