mk5corty
Whats the best way to go about painting a car with metalic paint. Is it best to just spray the base down and let it dry etc then do the clear, or do it straight after etc? any help appreciated. mk5corty, tell me how youd do it Shit never even saw this ohwell, i would spray the metallic onto primer sanded with 600 grit minimum, metallic paints show sanding scratches well. Let the base dry partially between metallic and clear say an hour or two, although this really depends on if your using 1k or 2k. You can sand earlier coats of metallic if it has orange peel although it's not recommended, just make sure the clear goes on unsanded colour. mk5corty
Primer contains a large quantity of talc, which is excellent at absorbing water, think talcum powder. Getting all the shit paint off will be a bitch, i would look for a uv resistant epoxy primer, then just scuf it when the time comes, many people use matt black epoxy but the sun will fade it, just scuff, recoat, spray some primer to hide the colour and then apply colour. blakamin
another trick with a mettalic basecoat (If you're gunna clear over) is to have a bit more distance between gun and panel and sort of "mist" it on in light, even strokes... avoid a "wet" coat at all costs unless you like stripes! ratt
lol see what happens if u dust on metallic. gonna have some funky lookin colors and transperant paint. metallics basecoat still needs to go on wet. as long as u dont drown the panel and its even

peteretep
how many coats of paint would you guys recommend on interior bits, and would that Plasti-Kote vinyl paint be good for other stuff like plastic interior bits?
corrupt
personally id put enough coats on to get a full even coverage, then one or two more quick ones, yeh that plasikote stuff will be fine, have used it before.
peteretep
yeah I've got a good coverage with only 1 coat but I'll put one or two more on there, was wondering about how that vinyl stuff holds up to mild use
corrupt
in the cortina atm, ive painted the door cards and pull handle things with black vinyl paint from supercheap, septone brand or whatever, after a year or so use the drivers pull handle has worn off inside the handle, and the door cards are stil mint. ratt
lol different folks different strokes.. dusting on metallics causes the aluminium particles (what makes a metallic, metallic ) to stand up as opposed to lying flat which can cause the color to come out light, and possibly mottled (especially with coarse silvers) edit: just my opinion, everyone has they're own technique and style

avenger79
Satin's got a sheen to it, also called semi-gloss. How straight is your car Spence?, and if you really want gloss on it go for it.No point doing a half arse job with matte. Still got millions of time before Nats. peteretep
hey, I want to spray a bunch of stuff for my escort, nothing bigger than 500x500x500, is it possible to buy a large cardboard box(dishwasher size) so that I can paint in that? I dont get the newspaper so that doesnt really work and I cant really paint inside my garage.
