  1. They swap earlier gearboxes into S15's because they're shit, well they make alot of noise. I had an S15 almost 10 years ago and the gearbox was noisey was expensive to replace (wasn't economic to repair) one I replaced it with was just as bad. You can't swap bellhousings on the Nissans.
  2. Dunno whats it in? Camrys with the 5sfe never hit even though the books say they should.
  3. Agree, wish I knew that ten years ago when these things use to serverly fuck me off. Always hot starting issues. Have taken them to so called carb experts who also couldn't repair them. Fitting earlier manual choke carbs was also considered.
  4. jeez, your lucky. one of my projects still has original plates, but no-one at VTNZ can find record of the vehicle, and it was de-regged in mid-80's. unless someone knows of another way of tracing it, it will have to be re-vinned as scratch built, thus losing classic rego. What kind of car? They can't find a record of the chassis number? Surely you can't register a car scatch built when it isn't. I just get the cars to a reasonable standard and take them along to AA/Vinz etc never had any problems except sometimes the Police letter thing, last two have been de-reg way before the 80's. If I came across a problem like you are saying I'd be saying thats not my problem, it yours.
  5. Yeah Vin only came in around 96 and is mainly for imports and all re registered cars since. Since its been rego'd in NZ there will be no dramas. The last one I did had been sitting since the 60's and was somehow in the computer system.
  6. I could do that as I live near there, but only tonight. (the rest of the week I'll be drunk)
  7. I live on the other side of town but if no one else pops up I'm happy to head over, if he is available Monday I could probably sneak off during work hours also.
  8. No Skyline expert but can take a look for you if you list your areas of main concern. Assuming that being rust?
  9. I remember them fitting a small sump to them and incorrect dipstick, it led to the rod exiting the block and fire destroying the car. It would have been overblown like the Prises thing a couple years back though. I loved them as a kid and had a matchbox one, also I think they outsold the MR2 3-1 in the USA.
  10. Does it struggle hot as well? Could have low compression. Remove glow plugs and test with jumper cables. They should get red hot in about the same amount of time the glow light stays on. Be careful though and face them away from you when testing.
  11. As long as they are pre SN they should be ok pays to look at the data sheet Penrite SN oils will do the same as any other to a pushrod engine Sn is a petrol rating, diesel should be a cg-4 type of rating. He is just saying Penrite have oil specially for old cars, I am using Elf 20w50 nowdays still SD rated.
  12. Na they (sometimes) check them for COF's never seen anyone give a fuck about them otherwise.
  13. Tryin to start it can foul the plugs in about 5 seconds, 1st thing i'd do is clean or replace them and have another go. I rebuilt a Mini the other week and the plugs fouled after it didn't start 1st up and they were brand new. Since everything else is good I'd start there.
  14. I'm guessing since there is no spark but power to the coil you'd begin with crank/cam angle sensors. This sometimes leads to a computer fault in a Toyota of this age, but check basis first. Make sure the spark plugs holes are not filled with oil, its fuel pump works etc
  15. Yeah compressed air works, also removing the filter housing and turning it upside down sometimes gets the fuel to the hand pump to get you going when you have no tools around.
  16. The hand pump will be stuffed, i hook up a electric pump to suck diesel through then crack the pipe on the injectors and crank the engine until fuel comes out the pipes. Tighten back up pipes and it should be fine. You will need a new hand pump next time you replace the filter or run out of diesel. If it happens again it'll be the front seal on the injector pump, requiring spendy pump work.
  17. Since you say it has a newish head elimanate radiator first, remove it and have tanks removed to flush it out propertly. Then remove/check/replace the head. Sounds ruthless but I've probably replaced 30+ heads on those things over the years, they're dirt cheap new and an easy job. They're are not as bad as Toyotas where the head is throwaway and you can normally see the cracks without pressure testing, so it may survive. If so use a genuine head gasket. Retorque it about 3 times also.
  18. Yeah Honda's can be a cunt, they also sieze in the hub alot making the tool useless. I think the tool is useless anyway, its the same amount of work to just do it with normal boots. And if the joint won't come off the shaft just remove the shaft and do it as Yammies said from the other end.
  19. Those are not inner lower control arm bushes though, radius rod and sway bar bushes are easy enough to get. Remove the arm and press it out and try and find one from the mount shop or similar, or find second hand arms if you don't want the car off the road. If Starion are the same the will be available from the USA as they have everything for them.
  20. I use Gee Motors in Napier for Lada parts as we have a few customers rolling them. Just did a timing chain on a 2103, they just send every part needed, so sweet when working on older rarer stuff. Btw it drove the lengh of NZ + back up here from Dunedin for repairs with the loudest chain rattle I have ever heard with no dramas. The local dealer here fitted 2c Toyota Diesel engines to brand new Nivas, that happen anywhere else?
  21. Yep. Vent it to the ground and block up EGR if fitted.
  22. All the ones I've seen are gear driven, did later ones get chain? Be backward if they did. Does it still have the problem or are you trying to find a problem in a good running vehicle?
  23. How much smoke comes out the breather/dip stick tube when its running? It'll run on like that if the motors fucked. I have a tester (of no use to you I know) but have never used it, you know when its fucked.
  24. Saw a brand new Hilux or whatever ute all sign written up at the Car Cafe last week, was surprised as I'd thought it was a north island thing. Took no notice of address or details however.
