BDA780
Currently my favorite project on here. Gonna watch this intently. I purchased a 1600cc block of Trademe from a guy who claimed it would most likely run. After removing the head it was in a similar state to this full of water but with early combustion chamber heads. Needless to say, we are still proceeding with the rebuild using the same block. Keep the update flowing!
dozydesmond
Hahahaha glad to hear it if you have any tips or ideas please share them  You might also find the book i found helpful if you're rebuilding a crossflow (see link above)  (I'm only 18 and still kinda guessing/googling/asking about this kinda thing ae )
pusherman
This motor will live. Strip it and clean the bollocks out of it and it will purr like a smoky old wreck but it will run
dozydesmond
Gunna stick a sidedraft on it with two Weber 45 DCOE's or two Weber 42 DCOE's, stick a 3/4 race cam or a 244k rally cam in it, port and polish the crud out of it, oversize the pistons, stick a 1.3 head on it, and stick it in a custom-built rally car (although, i might stick it in my '94 laser wagon to run it in first so look out chch)
crustywhip
i agree, it will run. they arent the most complicated of engines so as long as every thing moves it will be fine. im lucky enough to have grown up with old fords and we used to trash the shit out of them and loved every minute of it.
dozydesmond
well felix, looks like you and the chch lot WILL owe me fish n chips with coke after all ;)
kyteler
FYI, this motor was locked solid when I got it. Hadn't been run in over 20 years. I didn't even put fresh petrol in..
dozydesmond
Anyway, progress as of yesterday:  Engine is fully stripped now apart from the block plugs, the pistons (which need some, shall we say, 'persuasion' *grins evilly and cackles maniacally), and the valves. bores are soaking in a 50/50 mix of diesel/crc to loosen the rust and, consequently, free the pistons  The #1 cylinder, which had a valve open evidently The near-new timing-chain Big-Ends and Crank Bearings SLUDGE GALORE (Weighed it all, came in at approx 2 kg of sludge, not all of is shown here tho)
Raizer
stick a 1.3 head on it I'm assuming your after higher compression? You would want to use 1.3 pistons and stick with your 1.6 head. A 1300 head will just result in the same compression with smaller valves. Oh and why not a â…” race cam?
dozydesmond
either a 244k rally cam or a 3/4 race cam, 2/3 wont really be much use on gravel i don't think
dozydesmond
and i wont fit eh 1.3 pistons is, as it is i have to bore the cylinders out to get rid of the rust pits
ajg193
Looks like the water almost protected the bottom end by pushing the oil up.

Rookie
You will need to buy new pistons when you bore it, so buy 1300 pistons or it will be a slug.
dozydesmond
anyone feel like donating towards re-sleeving this thing...
punkoutnz
anyone feel like donating towards re-sleeving this thing... Â You can get pistons all the way up to 90 thou for these things. Measure the bore you have, chances are you wont need to go more than one, maaaaybe two sizes up (you'll probably be fine with 20 thou, but may have to go 40 thou). Â Unless you're bored out to 90 thou already you wont need to resleeve that block.
dozydesmond
its on 80.5 but its already been sleeved, those sleeves are screwed
